Has anyone watched it in the cinema. I thought it was really good!

Scary movies don't usually scare me, or they are too full on so I have to hide behind my hands.

In speak no evil, the constant build up of tension was so good.

James McAvoys acting was amazing.

Intelligent plot.

Scariest film that I've seen in a while!

In the original they do something to stop the abducted child from speaking. Haven't seen the remake

Yes, but that doesn't stop them writing. If they got the American girl she'd be able to slip someone a note. It was a pretty big plot hole anyway but with foreign children it's a bit more plausible that it'd work.

I've seen the original and the ending was so grim that I didn't want to watch the remake but it sounds like the ending has been changed so I may give it a go.

I was the same. The ending of the original haunted me for weeks, if not longer, and I am an avid horror and thriller fan. This remake it quite different, I recommend it.

I went to stay in a family run b and b for the weekend after watching the remake.

I couldn't help looking over my shoulder for days!

Saw this at the weekend and really enjoyed it. Well, enjoyed is an odd word but it was gripping and exceeded my expectations - good to feel real tension (the last film I watched at the cinema was Trap and it was a bag of shite).

It was well written I think. I was so annoyed with Ben not giving a shit about Hoppy when in Italy but then urging them to leave without it when they fled the cottage for the first time.

Not sure I want to watch the original - we also watched The Mist this weekend and there’s a film (won’t say anything else here)

Hah !
We had tricky visitors who overstayed their welcome right after we saw it, did provoke a few interesting scenarios in my head !

They were Dutch and Danish in the original iirc. Still had a big plot hole but was really grim.

Edited

The ending of the Mist made me laugh out loud.

I watched The Mist yesterday. Wow!!!

Sethera · 17/10/2024 19:26

One thing I didn't get... the British couple owned this huge house on acres of ground but the American couple had a whispered conversation about why a doctor would live somewhere so cheap. Perhaps it was another way to show their naive privilege but I find it hard to believe a run of the mill doctor in the US owns a house significantly bigger than that one.

I thought that - massive, rambling country house in the south with land - not cheap at all!

icelolly12 · 17/10/2024 19:38

Also loved this film, it kept me gripped from start to finish and at the end it was interesting was to look back and dissect the testing of boundaries right from taking their child's sunlounger in the first scene. Fantastic film and would like to rewatch as I'm sure I missed lots of little cues. Tempted to also watch the original but not sure it's for me given what I've read.

I think they were talking about the contents of the home - the fact everything was ancient and a bit grubby, not realising that's typical old money in Britian. Maybe to showcase the difference in UK/USA culture.

Why the fuck would you go back for a toy though.

Especially when you have left early in the dark, so they won't see you.

I would have told the child that we will get the couple to post it to us, then buy her another rabbit and say its that one.

Exactly. But this couple hated any sort of conflict and couldn't say no even to their own daughter

Yes they were so weak!

I think they made that couple so you just wanted to shout at them and say "what are you thinking"

I see that Paddy's wife in the film is played by an Irish actress. She did a good English accent!

offyoujollywelltrot · 17/10/2024 23:18

I actually yelled OH FUCK OFF at the screen when they went back for the toy.

EasyComfortDishes · 17/10/2024 23:28

It was a bit silly - how would they have sorted passports every year for a new child?- but amazing acting especially from the little boy.

MoonriseKingdom · 18/10/2024 07:10

I think there were quite a few holes if you think about it but I also think it was a really gripping film.
The money transfer thing didn’t add up. Having had to transfer money towards a house sale recently I know it wouldn’t just go through. Banks like to ask a lot of questions before transferring large amounts. Also it leads an easy trail back to them if anyone investigates a family’s disappearance which would likely happen eventually.

MonkeyTennis34 · 18/10/2024 07:46

@EasyComfortDishes
Surely they would have just taken the passports from the children's' (soon to be murdered) parents?

EasyComfortDishes · 18/10/2024 14:52

Yes but two people with British passports and the kid with a different nationality passport on a different name? Would that work?
Also the parents might not have bought the kids passports with them on the visit?

LeoOakley · 18/10/2024 15:31

I don't know anyone irl who has seen the original aside from my mother who asked me wtf after i told her to watch it

So I watched this version last weekend and enjoyed it. But the original has that extra spine-chill factor! It really got under my skin for weeks afterwards. It is the way the viewer is disarmed by relating to a sneaking unease the couple is experiencing that really packed its punch for me.

Both versions are a very worthy watch. The original ending is the stuff of nightmare of nightmares.

off to google The Mist

Nannyoggapple · 18/10/2024 15:36

The film also reminds us not to trust people and to believe what they say.

Paddy says he is a doctor in this film when he's actually unemployed.

When I was travelling, i met so many men who said that they were doctors or pilots

Spoiler alert

Yes you know how the family survive in this version.

They don't all survive in the original version

I watched both,. I thought the original was a better film, but oh so bleak. I was glad for the changes they made in the remake.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 19/10/2024 22:44

Well finally got the courage up to watch the remake and although i enjoyed the new version it felt like a totally different film. The horrors of the original will never leave me and I could never rewatch it. The new one, pah!! Easy on the eye.
