Never read the book or seen it on screen. So many TV and film adaptations 🤔

Which adaptation do you think is the best?
Is it close to the book?

Yes, OP - I am so sorry if these are spoilers!
No, I meant the other incident, but I won't say more because I'm aware I may already have said too much!

Oh damn I guess I have to revisit the book then. So much I have forgotten.

I have never read Jane Eyre (hides)

It's one of my favourite books, but no adaptation I've ever seen does it justice. It's a gothic novel, and the characters aren't lovable romantic heros. Read it, it's quite unique!

This is true. It's my favourite novel and I reread it every year. No film/series has ever appeared to really understand the dynamic between Catherine and Heathcliff or do the novel justice. The book is unbeatable but I have seen an incredible stage adaptation of it.

I agree with you completely. Which stage version?

Bbq1 · 24/09/2024 21:00

The one by The Wise Children theatre company. Think they are based in Bradford. It's a couple of years ago but I've seen a recorded version of it on Sky Arts.

Edited

It’s funny, Jane Eyre is my favourite book I must’ve read it 10 times but I’ve tried WH twice now and couldn’t get past the first few chapters. Maybe I’m mature enough to give it another go now but it’s not an easy book!

CarmelaBrunella · 24/09/2024 21:07

It's not, @Dollybantree very true. - I think people get mislead by the kind of book it is.
I love Jane Eyre. I think it's so atmospheric, and beautifully crafted.

PuppyMonkey · 24/09/2024 21:12

Agree with most others, there are some decent attempts to film it and I love the 1939 version but none of them come anywhere near the book. It’s almost as if Emily Brontë was a genius or something.Grin

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 24/09/2024 21:14

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned the Tom Hardy one yet! (2009.) He was Heathcliff.

He was really good in it, and that's what made me first fancy him! 😬

I struggled with Charlotte O'Reilly who plays Cathy though, as I think she's got strange eyes.

Heathcliff is a deeply unpleasant character. He murders animals and beats his wife. He is horrible, and yet he's portrayed on film as attractive and romantic.

Totally agree, I think most adaptations shy away from how horrible all the characters are, I’ve never seen a decent adaptation they always seem a bit sanitised, which is weird.

I know. I'd really like to see a proper version. Not sanitised, not making anyone a romantic hero, just telling the story as Emily Brontë wrote it.

They did 🤣

Tom Hardy tv series version, early 2000s (I think) his wig was so bad it distracted me throughout and needed it's own credits imo.

CarmelaBrunella · 24/09/2024 21:23

Sounds interesting.

Oh I did skim through the thread and didn't see anyone else mention it sorry! Blush

And yeah his wig is a bit odd I have to say!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 24/09/2024 21:26

Heathcliff was based on The Brontë sisters' brother Branwell wasn't he?

I bet someone has said that already too! Grin

Is MR Cathy? She's too old.

Yes unfortunately. And definitely, she is very pretty but Cathy is meant to be about 18/19 I'm pretty sure and she could not pass for a teenager!

MollyButton · 24/09/2024 22:35

Hate the book, can't imagine ever watching a film. Did get through it via Audiobook. Like the Kate Bush song. Quite like Jane Eyre and other Charlotte Brontë books.
Absolutely love Tenant of Wildfell Hall

Happy to send you my copy OP! 😂

Thanks for the offer @WeAreWhereWeAre but I've had it downloaded on my Kindle for years. I have decided to read it. Might watch the Tom Hardy one after though. 😉

The film with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon was good but it only tells half the story. The book goes on for much longer after Cathy's death.

Timothy Dalton and Anna Calder Marshal version is great , Timothy Dalton is wonderful, so handsome , so brooding , and of course he played the best Mr Rochester ever years later.

This is the one.

Absolutely horrified to learn Margot Robbie is being cast as Cathy in Emerald Fennell's new adaptation. Preposterous casting.

artictern · 25/09/2024 08:48

I wonder if I would still enjoy the 1992 WH as an adult as I did when I was a teenager 🤔 It gets so slated in reviews!

poppymango · 26/09/2024 14:18

artictern · 24/09/2024 21:20

This is definitely the best version!

Wuthering Heights

I've heard really good things about this adaptation and I love Juliette Binoche!

I tried to read it when I was younger but abandoned it half way through. I usually appreciate it when characters are flawed and interesting and real, rather than likeable. But in this case I found the characters to be so intensely unlikeable that I just didn't care about what happened to any of them! Perhaps I needed to mature a bit. Will give it another go. There are certain classics that I feel like I really should read.

It would be amazing to see an unknown Yorkshire actress given a chance like this. The budget they'd be able to get with Margot Robbie attached is probably eyewatering though; that's usually what it comes down to. Sigh.

I'm in a quandary now......

Should I read the book first but be forever disappointed by sub par films or

Watch one of the better films and have the joy of finding out the book is so much better than the film?

Neither you should watch the one starring Cliff Richard and have a good laugh.
