I'm looking for some recommendations for films to watch with a 12 year old.

We have started a weekly film night with my eldest to get some "grown up time" with her as she has much younger siblings so we are aware she doesn't get as much attention (and deserves some TV time that doesn't include Mickey Mouse or his mates)

So far she has enjoyed:
Dodgeball,
Rat race,
The Sixth Sense,
Get Out,

We've watched others but those were her favourites.

The worst part of film night is finding a bloody film so I'm hoping to compile a list of possibilities, any recommendations will be very welcome as my brain is totally stuck.

Heathers musical is on Amazon - I'd do that rather than the film as the peppy show tunes cover up the darker side but it deals with some mature topics and murder is a pretty giant theme along with attempted rape. I'd stick to Mean girls for a few more years

Mean girls
Moxie
Legally blonde
Truman Show
Austin Powers was a huge unanticipated hit as my DD is pretty straight laced
Woman in Black 12 version
Hitchhikers guide
Anything with Awkwafina
MIB
Titanic
Hunger Games
Divergent
Maze runner

The Proposal
Free Guy
Truman Show
Logan

Freaky Friday

What about Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead etc? Depends on the kids, but I'm thinking maybe Hot Fuzz for our next movie night, although that's probably a film we'd all watch, rather than an older kids' one.

if you two enjoyed the above mention movies then you'd surely like, Mean girls and Forrest gump.

Stand By Me (Not sure of the rating and might be considered a bit dark)

Dangerous Minds ( also not sure of the rating)

@Castlerigg I think the humour of hot Fuzz would appeal to older kids but don't know if you remember all the blood in the murder scenes! Decided it might be too much for ours. Also a lot of innuendo (which may go over their heads).

I must confess, I don't remember the blood. I think I would risk it with my two, but worth noting, so thanks 🙂

Yes I was looking forward to watching Hot fuzz with DD and did a pre-watch and there was lots of bits in it I'd forgotten

These are such classics! Lots of kids refuse to give them a chance (I've heard of several unsuccessful attempts and made one myself), and it's such a pity.

My 11 and 13 yo DDs have enjoyed

Mean Girls (original and new)
Are you there God, it's me, Margaret?
Ghostbusters (original and latest new versions)
Back to the Future
Princess Bride
The Woman in Black

longdistanceclaraclara · 26/08/2024 13:02

We walked out of the cinema for Are you there God, it's me Margaret. Dts were 12 at the time. It was such a disappointment and they were bored.

Anyway, they also liked Big, Legally Blonde, gremlins, My Girl and Turner and Hooch from the classics,

Look Who's Talking
Look Who's Talking Too

Miss Congenialty 1 and 2 were recent hits with my DD. We also love Damsel and Enola Holmes on Netflix. Jumanji films also.

Her favourites at the moment are the Peter Ustinov Poirots - Death on the Nile and Evil under the Sun. Bit niche I know but very glamorous.

Im going to try What we did on our Holiday next.

At that age and a bit older I really liked
things like

Cruel intentions
The hand that rocks the cradle
Beaches
Stepford Wives
The river Wild
Shawshank Redemption
The fugitive
The horse Whisperer
Overboard

These are pretty old, some are 18s? The op's child is 12.

mogtheexcellent · 29/08/2024 18:42

ooh and I forgot the Will Ferrall Eurovision film. DD loved that.

PragmaticDramatic · 30/08/2024 08:30

Evolution ( don’t know the rating) but I think it’s on Netflix or ITV etc.
