Film nights with a 12 year old.

I'm looking for some recommendations for films to watch with a 12 year old.

We have started a weekly film night with my eldest to get some "grown up time" with her as she has much younger siblings so we are aware she doesn't get as much attention (and deserves some TV time that doesn't include Mickey Mouse or his mates)

So far she has enjoyed:
Dodgeball,
Rat race,
The Sixth Sense,
Get Out,

We've watched others but those were her favourites.

The worst part of film night is finding a bloody film so I'm hoping to compile a list of possibilities, any recommendations will be very welcome as my brain is totally stuck.

If she likes the hunger games she will love the maze runner movies! Mine LOVES them.

My 11 year olds have enjoyed many of the ones above. We let them watch older age rated ones provided not too much violence and sex. We aren't worried about language more disturbing themes.

Zoolander was a hit, Evan Almighty, Austin Powers (just first), Ferris Bueller's day off, hunt for the Wilder people, Dodge Ball, Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Lord of the rings, True spirit, Yes day (and other Jennifer Garner ones), Pitch perfect trilogy (also a surprising hit with DH!).

Following for more ideas! I also hate choosing one on movie night that works for everyone.

Taytotots · 23/08/2024 22:51

Forgot - the blues brothers (if you don't mind drinking and lots of bad language).

Summertimer · 23/08/2024 22:58

Get Out - whoa very scary film.

Heathers? (My niece has just been to see the musical and loved it!)
Clueless (not my thing but might work)
See You Yesterday

Lost Boys?

Could you do classics?
Goonies
Back to the Future
Karate Kid etc?

Classics 😧 apart from Back to the Future, maybe not

Ormally · 23/08/2024 23:03

One possibility is 'Clue' - some scenes and attitudes are of its '80s time but it's a clever fleshing-out of the Cluedo game.

Goldrill · 23/08/2024 23:07

The newest hercule poirot ones were a big hit.
Bill and Ted's
All the studio gibhli
And terminator 1 and 2! I fast forwarded a couple of bits but they were most upset by the end of T2. The whole nuclear winter bit passed them by.

Can't do;
Jaws. Too scary
Titanic: the steerage people being locked in freaked them out.

Not always the things I worry about which cause problems!

We've just watched war of the worlds which went really well. Going to do catch me if you can, next

Mine definitely prefers the films that no push the limits of their age rating 😂

Heartofglass12345 · 23/08/2024 23:12

Mermaids
Now and Then (absolutely loved this when I was 12!)
The others (quite scary though!)
The holiday, maybe save it for Christmas Smile

Heartofglass12345 · 23/08/2024 23:12

I'm not sure silence of the lambs is ok for a 12 year old lol

Blades of Glory
Caddyshack
Breakfast club
Ferris Bueller
Weekend at Bernies
Beetlejuice
Lost Boys

Omg - Weekend at Bernie’s is an 80’s classic but sadly I can’t get my 13 yr old to watch it with me (even though I think he’d find it hilarious).

I was thinking, Clueless and Pitch Perfect

APurpleSquirrel · 23/08/2024 23:16

Heartofglass12345 · 23/08/2024 23:21

Ooh I loved 10 things I hate about you too.
Runaway bride is a good one too!
Labyrinth goes without saying lol

EconomyClassRockstar · 23/08/2024 23:22

Never Been Kissed for the sole reason that they will be completely appalled if they're anything like my kids! That film did not age well but is a great talking point.

EconomyClassRockstar · 23/08/2024 23:25

As a complete aside, I think it's such a lovely moment when you start enjoying "older" films with your eldest. DC1 is now 27 and still remembers their movie nights once their younger siblings had gone to bed. And make sure you have great snacks!

AliMonkey · 23/08/2024 23:27

Some really good ideas here but surprised by recommendations for Titanuc and Shawshank Redemption for a 12yo. There’s a steamy sex scene in Titanic and whilst Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite films it does have discussion and implication of rape. I’m not saying 12yo don’t know about such things but that’s different to watching it as a family!

At that age DD enjoyed the Pitch Perfect films, Legally Blonde, Hidden Figures, Men in Black, Little Women and some of the scarier Disney remakes. Anything with strong female characters was usually a hit too.
