Saw it last night. Thought it was an excellent film. The cursing that peppers all the way through was hysterical! Olivia Coleman is such a superb actress.

Predictable? You know it’s a true story, right? I think they were kind of stuck with the actual plot that happened..

No, I mean predictable in the way the characters and story were handled. As I said, the dim policeman, the Wurzel Gummidge farmer, the dotty old bat and so on. Predictably handled if you like. It was an Ealing comedy brought up to date. With swearing. And yes, I did know it was a true story, but that doesn't make the film any less of a concoction.
Maybe because I'm pretty sweary myself I don't find the spectacle of posh thesps effing and blinding particularly rib-tickling. And that really was the mainspring of humour.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2024 21:42

It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but I enjoyed it. How did the WPC live in such a posh house?

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/03/2024 15:56

I saw it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. It was funny but also sad. It has a brilliant cast.

I assumed she lived with her sister's family because wasn't the little girl her niece? It was a beautiful house.

Went to see it with my 18 year old daughter tonight because of this thread! I haven't been to the cinema in god knows how many years.

I absolutely loved it!!!! As an ex army Scotswoman there was nothing my daughter hadn't heard from me before, except maybe Foxy-Arsed Whore!!

Wonderful, feel good film with very dark undertones. My daughter and I had great conversation afterwards about sexism and plight of unmarried mothers.

My daughter is actually going back to watch it with her friends as she enjoyed it so much.

I too am not a fan of Olivia Colman but she was great in this. In fact all the actors were.

According to some on Mumsnet, it's a tragedy not a comedy....

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/films/5012838-wicked-little-letters-warning?page=1

I laughed.. 🤷🏽‍♀️

It's a tragedy and a comedy. Someone on that thread said it was about racism - I think she was confused by the colour blind casting. I doubt if there were any black judges in the 1920s and this is Gladys Moss https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/14033507.blue-plaque-to-be-unveiled-for-sussexs-first-female-police-officer-gladys-moss/

Blue Plaque to be unveiled for first female police officer in Sussex

A BLUE plaque honouring Sussex's first female police officer will be unveiled today by her nephew.

I'm not saying it's not a tragedy.

I'm saying it's a comedy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/03/2024 11:34

The film is a comedy. I laughed.

The true story is a tragedy. After all Edith was mentally ill and was eventually sentenced to a year's hard labour. Not to mention the grief she caused other people.

Edited

And the horrendous abuse she suffered from her father, in the film version.

LadyDanburysHat · 14/03/2024 11:38

I loved this film. It was also not dragged out too long like some films can be these days. No filler, just good all the way through

SueblueNZ · 19/03/2024 22:25

How did Edie Swan who was reared and living in such a god-fearing home, develop such a colourful vocabulary?

LunaNorth · 09/04/2024 22:49

The true story was even worse - Edith Swan deliberately framed Rose, who did a year’s hard labour as a result - and was sent back to prison when the letters resumed, only being released when Edith was caught.

A grim tale.

Possibly from Rose, with whom she had been friends.

I thought it was fairly naff but still thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of very talented actors in a mediocre-poor film. An easy watch. I went with my bestie and we had fun.

murasaki · 09/04/2024 23:27

I saw it tonight, with a q and a with Joanna Scanlan and the actress who played Gladys (sorry, I've forgotten her name) afterwards, which really drilled into the sexism and classism and was great. Also they said how much they all laughed on set and how it is probably one of the few films where the out takes aren't the swear bits. They also talked about working with a diverse cast, and how it pegged onto the facts of the case and diverted from it, and where the writer came across the story, very interesting. I loved it, my friend and I at 47 and 51 were quite the youngest in the audience, and there was a lot of laughter.

Surely the very definition of naff is an adult woman describing her friend as her “bestie”?

SueblueNZ · 10/04/2024 00:23

@WatchandWaitorNot
Nasty.

Just as the very definition of nasty is an adult woman sneering at another's choice of words on a lighthearted thread about a film.

Just been to see this. I ws put off initially by the poor reviews but needed something light after watching 3 heavy film in a row ( Killers of the Flower Moon, All of Us Strangers and The Zone of Interest). I really enjoyed it. There were darker themes but it was fun and I loved the creative swearing! Foxy Arsed Rabbit Fucker!!!!😆
