Wicked Little Letters - warning 😁

This was a very enjoyable film, great actors - Olivia Colman, Timothy Spall, Jessie Buckley, Tim Key to name a few.

But - don't go to watch it if you have issues with swearing. I'm not sure there's a film out there with more!

My favourite scene was when Olivia's character told her dad, played by Timothy Spall, what she was thinking.

A light fun film based on a true story - if that's your thing, you'll enjoy it. (As long as you aren't like a woman that I spoke to recently that thinks swearing in anything is 'boring and lazy'. This film is not for her).

Great review, will definitely watch it now!

That 'boring and lazy' woman though, dying to know what tv/films she enjoys!

Looking forward to seeing it on Saturday night seen the trailer a few times and you just have to laugh! Thankyou for the warning!

Was saw this on Monday. Brilliant cast, great story and it is hilarious. But yes, there is a surprising amount of swearing. I get the impression the cast must have had a right laugh filming it.

I also Googled the history. The film is a lot closer to the true story than I expected.

SparklyOwls · 21/02/2024 11:26

I saw this being filmed, was fascinating to watch. I didn't realise it had been released already.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 21/02/2024 11:29

Absolutely great film and hilarious I was gonna start a thread on Monday but forgot.

LOL I remember going to see Four Weddings with my late Mother. There was a lot of tutting at the opening scene 😁 Fuckity fuck!!

I'm not sure if it's on official release yet. It might be Friday. I'm a member of a cinema, and sometimes we get one off screenings in the weeks leading up to release.

Is this film a slapstick comedy with bad swearing basically?

How stupid is it?

I look my late Father to that and when we left he announced ‘if that is what films are like these days please never take me again’ 😆

No. It's a very British film at the heart of which is a whodunnit. It has comic moments and at times lots of swearing but it's not gratuitous. The plot surrounds a mystery letter writer who sent rude letters and was subsequently arrested for defamation. The swearing is particularly funny because it is in direct contrast to the serious tone of the film.

Me too! The set in the streets was fascinating, felt very authentic.

I've seen the trailer for this online and it looked brilliantly hilarious. Will definitely try and see it now.

Any possible pearl-clutching reminds me of the reaction to "Up yer bum!" in Wish You Were Here (though that sounds tame in comparison).

MassageForLife · 23/02/2024 17:34

It's not really a whodunnit - we know that fairly early on, and it's based on a 100 year old true story.

It's just a comedic take on a true event that includes (for justifiable reasons) a lot of swearing.

I really want to see this. I saw a clip of Olivia Colman at what I think was the premiere telling a reported that her favourite swear word is "cunt" but that it's actually highbrow as Chaucer used it Grin

domineastronomy · 23/02/2024 21:10

Saw this today and really enjoyed it.
The swearing was outrageously funny but one or two people walked out!
The three main characters, all women were brilliant.

sashagabadon · 24/02/2024 19:35

Really enjoyed it too. Great little film

Pancakee · 24/02/2024 22:34

I really enjoyed this film too. The cast was amasing.

rookiemere · 25/02/2024 17:56

I thought it was an odd little film. Olivia Coleman seemed like she was too old for her role and Jessie Buckley far too healthy and well looking for hers ( same issue with her in Cabaret).

But the supporting cast were great and it was good to see a film with such a strong female cast.

Mydogisagentleman · 25/02/2024 19:59

Looking forward to seeing it.
Tim Spall is a god amongst men and, I was pleased to see, trailers showed Olivia Coleman is able to talk 'normally ' rather than the 5-6 words quickly then a pause

jay55 · 25/02/2024 21:07

It proper cheered me up at the weekend.
So much fun.

Alicewinn · 26/02/2024 09:02

Mogloveseggs · 27/02/2024 22:37

Just got back from watching this-excellent film loved it!

Mimilamore · 28/02/2024 19:53

Saw it today, great acting all round and some real laugh out loud moments...loved the swearing, do it myself on occasion!

This film is fucking awful.
Exaggerated characters. No nuance, no subtlety.
Just cos you're fucking swearing it's not fucking funny.
If Sid James and Barbara Windsor were in it, it would be 'Carry on fucking swearing '.

Funderthighs · 28/02/2024 22:10

Just back from seeing this. The cinema was full, no one walked out and everyone was chuckling. Great film 🤣
