Anyone really looking forward to it? I’m excited, I absolutely loved the first one. Going Saturday.

I went, of course (given username!), almost had the cinema to myself last night.

Visually amazing. I love the books - however I realised when watching the second film that I love the religion and politics aspects and skip through the fighting. Religion and politics obviously not so visually appealing, so overall a bit too much fighting and battle for me.

Paul was great and I also really enjoyed Princess Irulan, although I'd imagined her with dark hair (possibly a hangover from the 80s film which has wormed its way into my head).

I feel like those who haven't read the books are missing out, but the story would still hang together.

PermanentTemporary · 16/03/2024 20:20

Yes have never read them, but considering it now.

The cinema was pretty packed, afternoon a good choice for a long film. I was genuinely surprised how late it was at the end, it didn't feel that long to me.

Absolutely 😵at the woman putting her head in the popcorn bucket above...

Mothership4two · 21/03/2024 08:03

Late to the party but we saw it last night. Loved it and thought the time flew by. No popcorn snufflers in.

Overstream · 24/03/2024 21:38

Just got back. Overall I enjoyed it, even though I knew the story I was gripped. I found it really scary in parts! And it was soo loud - the volume was actually too loud at my screening - all that thumping music mirrored my own thumping heartbeat!

But they did take liberties with the plot - the baby Alia should’ve been born. She has a pivotal role in the book and her birth really demonstrates the power of the Water of Life. The whole film takes place during Jessica’s pregnancy (8-9 months unless she has a longer incubation period?!) when it was actually over a number of years.

Looking forward to watching it again at home though, when I can turn down the volume, pause it for a loo break and fast forward the more violent scenes!

We're the same.
The cinema was packed you could have heard a pin drop.
Brilliant
Was gripped from the start.

have never read the books and really just went to keep DH (injured/can't drive) company.

i thought the visuals were really good and followed the story overall not too badly, although the brief appearance of his grown up sister took me a minute! as a few folk have already commented, i thought some of it seemed a bit rushed/under-developed:

  • Paul's switch to messiah was pretty fast
  • Austin Butler going from "pretend" fighter to nearly-all-conquering was abrupt!
  • Florence Pugh felt really under-used, and Christopher Walken didn't give me any sense of power/influence
the one story strand that i felt i wasn't following properly was the bene gesserit stuff about keeping the bloodline going - why was that important in terms of Harkonnens - and the comments about them setting up Paul's messiah arc. still not sure i'm going to be persuaded to read the books though ;-)

I loved the way Chani summoned a worm like she was calling an Uber 😂

👏😅

From what I remember of the story, due to his mother taking 'the water of life' while pregnant Aila was born with the full knowledge of a reverend mother and she grew through her childhood quickly.

The original intentio of the Bene Gesserits was for Jessica to have a daughter who they'd marry of to the son of the Harkonnens to help produce the kwesi saderahk. Jessica betrayed the sisterhood by having a son. The Bene Gesserit regard the nobles as bloodstock and are trying to breed a super being by organising the marriages.

I enjoyed it but would like to read the books I think now…
I am showing my age, but my immediate thought when Paul says “I’m not the Messiah” was “he’s just a naughty boy!!”
🤣
Thankfully we were in a quiet cinema with other geeks who only ate at the noisy bits and timed their Toilet trips similarly for loud battles scenes. Me and kids included… I have them well-trained.

Epli · 10/04/2024 23:49

I loved part 1, some if the scenes lije arrival of the envoy of Bene Gesserit are mindblowing. Part 2 felt a bit underwhelming. As pp I though Walken wasn't the right choice for an emperor, but bigger problem for me was Zendaya. I think her role is not written particularly well and very schematic, but she is also does nothing to add dimensions to the character.

The music was also less cohesive and impactful than in Part 1.

That's what I said to OH at that bit of the film!

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/04/2024 10:10

Visually....wow!
DS saw it at the IMAX which he said was stunning.

But the level of graphic violence in places was, for me, too much.

I preferred The Holdovers 😂

paristotokyo · 21/04/2024 16:14

Ahh absolutely LOVED IT. Visually stunning. Finally managed to watch it as we are abroad and found it showing in a cinema in English and the local language subtitled. Kind of annoying that the parts that they spoke the harkonnen and fremen languages was also subtitled in this so poor DH had to constantly whisper translations 😂 will watch it again when it comes online for streaming. Lol at Paul just breathing and Stillgar constantly proclaiming 'Lisan Al Ghaib!' 😂

burnoutbabe · 04/05/2024 23:33

We just watched on Amazon prime (£16)

Weird double subtitles on the screen.

I felt a lot more happened in part 1. And this sort of ended as though there should be a part 3.

ThatPlumBear · 06/05/2024 20:30

I really liked it!

KindaBinding81 · 06/05/2024 20:37

I literally fell asleep. My DD17 and DS20 loved it but me and my DH found it just SO boring and self-important. Laughably so.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 14/05/2024 14:48

DH and I enjoyed the first one but after sitting through the second, I don't think we will bother with the third. Really quite tedious tbh.
