Anyone really looking forward to it? I’m excited, I absolutely loved the first one. Going Saturday.

Saw it yesterday- brilliant piece of film-making.

Workingmytickettoparadise · 02/03/2024 15:13

Well stay past the credits as apparently there is a scene afterwards ( I read about it rather than seeing it). I didn’t but I couldn’t follow it. I’m off to read the Wiki entry to make sense of it.

There isn't a post credit scene. Is that what you meant?

MothralovesGojira · 03/03/2024 15:26

I thought it was visually stunning but as I read the books as a teen (and many times since then) I'm a bit grumpy about parts of the story being truncated and changed.
The book is impossible to film as it was written even in two or more parts but some bits just didn't sit comfortably with me.
DP loved it though. He saw part 1 last weekend and enjoyed part 2 last night but he had to listen to me grumbling all the way home 😆

thesugarbumfairy · 03/03/2024 15:52

not at all 😂 we left the cinema during the first one. Bored stiff. I will watch it though, when its on now tv or wherever.

Spanterzella · 04/03/2024 13:24

It was glorious, absolutely loved it! Feel so grateful to have seen it in all its glory on a big IMAX screen.

Mumsnut · 05/03/2024 17:08

I didn’t think it was as good as Part 1. The last half dragged, and then there wasn’t even an ending as such, just another pause. Zendaya has one expression (the petted lip and stony glare of a child told they can’t paint the cat), and Paul’s character flip from modest good egg to Messiah, expressed via loud shouting, just seemed very rushed

rosewain24 · 08/03/2024 16:27

Looking forward to seeing it was meant to go last week but everyone ive spoke to says its better than the first!

I thought it was really good, if anything better than the first one.
Austin Butler was amazing as Feyd.

I'm not sure how accessible Dune is to someone who is new to the whole concept and story. For example you need the historical context of the Great Revolt / machine wars in order to understand why they don't have computers or AI and therefore the spice is intrinsic to the functioning of their civilisation e.g. interstellar travel (navigators) and computing (mentats).

For those who haven't read any of the books, there are YouTube videos which provide a quick background summary.

thats not really true I was new to it, fully understood it and am looking forward to seeing 2, we are going tomorrow. Due to its overwhelming success it would validate my opinion.

Perimama · 08/03/2024 18:11

Going tomorrow - really looking forward to it!

LunaNorth · 08/03/2024 18:31

We watched it this afternoon. There were some absolutely epic moments, and great performances, but I don’t think the narrative was as good as the first one. Some parts felt rushed, which I realise is necessary with such a hefty book, but still…

Visually stunning, though. And I wanna ride a worm!

colouringindoors · 08/03/2024 20:43

Going tomorrow!! Loved Dune 1 so much I saw it twice in the cinema, rewatching now as a reminder! So atmospheric.

SecondHandFurniture · 08/03/2024 22:53

Loved it. Absolutely epic. There were definitely some underused actors though; obviously chucking their hat in for when Villeneuve gets around to the part 3 screenplay!

AngeloMysterioso · 09/03/2024 00:51

Saw it again today, in imax this time - SO much better on the bigger screen! Well worth travelling a bit further for the experience- I’m half tempted to schlep up to that London to watch it at the BFI.

But on 2nd viewing I did agree with @Mumsnut’s summary about the characters- Chani mostly just scowls and stomps out of various rooms and Paul goes from being quite sweet and humble to just yelling at everybody and literally stamping his foot like a petulant toddler at one point. I won’t pretend I didn’t find Austin Butler’s Feyd Rautha a little bit sexy though even with the egg head and black teeth.

I do have a question about the sandworms- maybe this is explained in the book, I dunno- but the scene where Paul rides one for the first time makes the whole mounting thing look quite tricky, and the next thing you know it’s like Arrakis public transport, they’ve got Jessica’s little pod thing and a shitload of people on them- how are they all getting on and off?

LunaNorth · 09/03/2024 04:59

I loved the way Chani summoned a worm like she was calling an Uber 😂

MothralovesGojira · 09/03/2024 10:23

@AngeloMysterioso
Happy to answer your sandworm question.
The barbed hooks that the Fremen use open up the worm's scales makes the worm turn the open segments upwards as they hate getting sand under the scales. The riders that go up first throw ropes down to allow other Fremen to climb up. When they want to get off they go back down the ropes and jump off into the sand and stay still until the worm is released & departed. The Reverend Mother's palanquin is raised by the riders via ropes and held in place using ropes and smaller barbs directly into the scales (I think). They then lower it back down when they want to get off.
The lead rider holds the ropes attached to the big barbs that hold the scales open at the front and directs the worm by adjusting how open the scales are - want to go right pull on the right barb etc so like riding a horse. The worm has to be ridden to the point of exhaustion so that it will just go back under the sand to rest and not turn and attack the departing Fremen.
Hope that answers your query!

Saw in iMax today. Wow. Still have the visuals in my head. Fascinating exploration of culture, power and mythology with great acting and a "sound" track like nothing else. See it on the biggest screen you can!

Lampslights · 10/03/2024 07:35

I thought it was very good, but it felt long, as it was. I didn’t quite realise it was 2hr 46 mins.

it kept me hooked but at one point I felt like I’d been sitting in my cinema seat for quite some time. We saw it at imax and the seats were quite cramped and it was mobbed.

the couple next to me ate throughout , they both had the super size bags of popcorn, and then loads of bags of chocolate/sweetie stuff, and the woman did something I’ve not seen someone do in public before, she put her head fully in the bag of popcorn , like she was dunking for apples, and ate it like that.

at one point I realised they had been eating for 2 hours straight without stopping, and the rustling, and the head in the bag thing was honestly a bit distracting as she was right next to me.

I think that made it feel longer, when you’re cramped and shoulder to shoulder with a stranger, rustling and shoving their head in their popcorn and it goes on for hours, with so many food stuffs, it starts to be a bit wearying.

I am sorry you had this experience but this made me really laugh 😂😂😂😂

does sound revolting though

Hateyo · 10/03/2024 12:07

I’ve normally finished my nachos during the adverts and coming soon 🙈

That sounds nearly as complex and lengthy as the above (very helpful) description of How to Ride a Giant Sandworm.😀

I know I read the first novel aeons back, and struggled with Paul ‘Most Annoying Messiah Ever’ Atreides. I spent the entire time hoping some helpful Bene Gesserit would off him before he got to stomp around shoutily any more.

Went to see it again today 😁 even better 2nd time!

Disagree, don't think you need any of that background.

BigFatLiar · 10/03/2024 22:05

In ye olde days they had a break in the middle of long films where you could go to the loo and someone would come to the front selling ice cream and drinks. Need to introduce that again for these long films.

PermanentTemporary · 16/03/2024 19:49

Just skidding in as I went with dp. Not my sort of thing as a rule and was expecting to think my own thoughts, replan my bathroom etc for a couple of hours. But it was excellent. I think any film that requires you to go out the days has to give you a reason to do so, and this was just spectacular beyond belief. I'm very much Team Paul and liked how long it took for the Fremen to accept him, but then got a bit annoyed when Gurney just... joined in. I also think Zendaya seemed to be a bit disengaged by the end (it must be the hell of a filming experience though.

Yirk · 16/03/2024 19:52

Brilliant film.
