I didn’t know much about Bob Marley before seeing the film and I can’t say I feel I know anymore about him after seeing the film. The acting was great but I was bored throughout. I think they were going for, in parts, something like they did in The Doors film but it just didn’t entertain me at all.

yes although i love his music i dont know if i will bother, or at least pay to see it

TraitorsGate · 17/02/2024 18:57

BBC "when Bob marley came to Britain' was much better

Drivinginmycar · 17/02/2024 19:06

I saw it and enjoyed it, but it somehow didn't fit together well. He didn't say much😁 I learned he was a very spiritual person (who smoked a lot of weed)

Moanranger · 17/02/2024 23:55

I enjoyed it, but I love reggae. The scene shifts were confusing and the Jamacain patois was so thick sub-titles would have helped. Also a knowledge of Rastafarianism- I knew enough to understand the allusions. Not the greatest film all in all, more one for reggae fans.
Ben Kingsley Adair’s wig was bad.

Fantastic that you needed subtitles! Kingsley did a good job with the accent.
Jamaicans would have been so disappointed with anything similar to the Cool Runnings accent.

Those 2 years tell us a lot about who Bob was, what he stood for, his struggles, his passion and it is unsurprising that it was out of this that came one of the greatest albums of all time. You don’t even have to be a reggae fan to understand some of the message in the music.

I loved it. Thought the acting was really good. I don't know what I expected from it but I found it positive, uplifting and sad too.

TowerStork · 18/02/2024 07:15

Is his music in the film? Remember that Jimi Hendrix film that didn't have the rights to play any of his music? It was hard to get into.

Films about musicians can be hit and miss I think. If it's more about his life and person than the 'making it' narrative that sounds more appealing to me

Ridingaroundonbuses · 18/02/2024 09:18

@RubyRoss Yes his music is in the film.

@Luddite26 - Bob’s music spoke of struggle and upliftment but was about love too and we saw these themes in the film.

@RubyRoss - His original music was very much in the film.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/02/2024 10:28

I liked it. Uplifting but also sad. I liked that his family were involved in producing. Did tear up a little at ending and the real life footage!

Plus it wasn't dragged our for about 3 hours

I want to see this. My dad loved Bob Marley. One of my first memories of music is Exodus. I chose 'Redemption Song as my choice for his funeral, so it will be emotional.

You must watch it at the cinema then for sure - make sure you do!!. Exodus plays a big part in the film.
We watched it right to the end of the credits and another lady said to us they didn't want to leave either.

have just got back from seeing it and I really enjoyed it. I hadn't realised he was so young when he died. Great acting.

I thought all the acting was fab too.
We said he was the same age as Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana when they died!

TheSameClip · 18/02/2024 18:38

I loved it. So did my teens. DH is Jamaican, so was a bit more picky about some of the accents / patois in the film, but he did think it was a good film.

I think if you’re expecting a standard biopic, you’ll be disappointed, as it deals with a specific period in the last few years of his life. I knew what to expect, so was fine with that.

I thought it was really beautifully done and captured the power of his music, his relationship with Rita and her pivotal role in his success, and his political significance really well.

The acting was superb. I loved Lashana Lynch as Rita!

SisterAgatha · 18/02/2024 18:43

Really loved it. However I thought they could have made more of the fact his cancer wasnt caused by a football injury as that’s just not how cancer works. Also could have covered more about how he treated Rita, she is an amazing woman and she went through some hard times for that man.

I also didn’t think his assassin apologised but I haven’t googled.

I also thought the patois was spoken really slowly for added accessibility 🤣

GatherlyGal · 18/02/2024 18:43

I loved it and so did DD who is 15. Informative and uplifting.

Am none the wiser about the details of Rastafarianism (apart from the weed consumption) but it was a very watchable film.

TheSameClip · 18/02/2024 18:53

The Bob Marley musical is more of a standard ‘the rise of Bob Marley’ storyline and deals a lot more with his relationship with Rita, the other women (especially Cindy Breakspeare) and the sacrifices Rita made.

It’s absolutely brilliant in a totally different way, and the lead actor / singer is phenomenal. Definitely worth seeing if it’s still on (?).

welshcakes6 · 18/02/2024 19:09

Agree with you op didn't enjoy it. I didn't read about it before hand though so didn't realise it wasn't a life story. Found the dialogue really hard to understand in parts.

Rita was very involved in the making of the film.

Three generations of my family went to see it last night and we all loved it

SisterAgatha · 19/02/2024 00:06

I think that’s why it didn’t cover the bad side of the marriage. She’s said before she has shown the world her good face. The film still showered him with her love when he often didn’t show it to her.

Mimilamore · 28/02/2024 19:58

Saw this last week and enjoyed it.... Bob's ( the actor) were a little too perfect though.... sad that he died so very young

skippy67 · 01/03/2024 15:13

Saw it last week. Loved it. And subtitles would've been totally wrong!

hellswelshy · 04/03/2024 09:29

Saw this yesterday and loved it. Felt very emotional at the end seeing the real life footage. Makes me want to read more about his life and relationship with Rita and his children.
