Thinking that Saltburn was incredible

That really. What an amazing, surprising and beautifully made film. Excellent acting, great music and a real twist at the end. 🙂

I hoped the butler would suddenly appear during the naked dancing and stab him in the heart. That would have been a truly satisfying ending.

SPOILER AHEAD!

Loved this Film so much I’ve been Googling about it and found a snippet saying that originally, the ending had a scene with Duncan serving the runny eggs again, suggesting the serfs all knew Ollie that was a wrong ‘un and were making it known to him too. But they cut that.

Anyway. I love this film so much that the Oscar snubs feel like they’ve snubbed me personally.

BTW, the absolute standout performance in this film among many - Carey Mulligan’s 5 mins is sublime - is for me, Alison Oliver, who is so brilliant. Why isn’t she getting awards nods?

PS. Have watched Saltburn more times than is healthy or necessary.

It was ok. But just a pastiche of The talented mr ripley and brideshead revisted really. The twist was not much of a twist-you could see it coming a mile off surely?
I thought it was well acted and styled and the sound track was great. But it wasn't particularly original and the 'shocking' scenes didn't really add much to it other, than being talking points.

piscofrisco · 02/02/2024 06:10

Duncan was the most intriguing character for me. I wish they'd done more with him .

Ontopofthesunset · 03/02/2024 15:01

We watched it last night and thought it was just not a very good film. There were a few good performances (Rosamund Pike, Richard E Grant and Jacob Elordi) and it was often very pretty, but it was just so silly. There was a twist I guess half way through, but not at the end as everything was laid out well before then. Even as a pastiche we thought it wasn't sufficiently satirical to be successful (just too many tired stereotypes even with the clumsy reversal of one of them) and as a believable plot it was pants.

Also loved it... thought the characters, cinematography etc was a whole vibe. Utterly bonkers but quite the ride...

hlc123 · 03/02/2024 16:53

Late to the party but I loved it. Keep watching cast interviews on youtube. I thought the acting was amazing, thought Rosamund Pike played a great role and Alison Oliver's lines in the scene when Venetia is in the bath was so well delivered. I don't personally find Barry keoghan but thought he was well cast and it's a film I am still thinking about days after watching.

Just watched it! Was putting it off as lots of people were saying it was disturbing so was expecting something really grim. Fucking loved it! Yes some disturbing and grim bits but also very funny (Rosamund in particular has some just brilliant lines!) and with some fantastic characters brilliant acting and brilliant music. Loved that all the music was from the right time period. Going on favourite films list!

Ontopofthesunset · 04/02/2024 13:02

It was lazy though that the music was from broadly the right period but not quite right. Why set it in 2006 and then have music from 2007 and 2008, and have them watch a film that wasn't even on general release that summer and certainly not on video? Why not change the year or change the music?

And a particular beef, why cast a man in his mid 30s who in no way could possibly be seen as an 18 or 19 year old and who couldn't even get the accent right?

There was no believeable characterisation, no depth at all, so overall it was just nice to look at with a few funny lines and a few gratuitously "shocking" scenes.

Ontopofthesunset · 04/02/2024 13:04

Just adding that it would have been summer 2007 by the end of the film but some of the music was later than that (FloRida's Low for example) as was the film they were watching (Superbad - released later in 2007).

Jioyt · 04/02/2024 13:18

I watched it after hearing all the hype but left disappointed. It seems like the point of it was to somehow shock the viewer, which it didn't do for me. I found the whole thing bizarre and pointless.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 04/02/2024 17:44

It was entertaining. I just couldn’t get my head round whoever he decided to sexually assault basically let him, his character was a little weirdo and not remotely attractive

Mmm. I thought it was quite well thought out that no one took him seriously intensely intimate sex or otherwise. The girl at Oxford walked off halfway through, Farley still hated him, Venetia still threw up after breakfast. He had no influence over any of them.

PossumintheHouse · 04/02/2024 20:16

Because it’s so unusual to cast somebody that isn’t the age they’re meant to be?

YoureRockingTheBoat · 04/02/2024 20:27

Interesting point @Marchintospring I didn’t gather these together for this insight. It seemed to me that he was confident in a way the story didn’t justify - but the way you see it his confidence may have been developed in places these aristocrats never needed to worry about. He’s not reaching them.

Amara123 · 04/02/2024 20:48

I thought there was an interesting line when Rosamund Pikes character talks about how beautiful and interesting Pamela (Carey Mulligan) is.
Reminds me of when Promising Young Woman came out and some big shot film critic said Carey Mulligan wasn't good looking enough or sexy enough for the role. Emerald defended her at the time, so I wonder if she took the opportunity in Saltburn to make a point!

Marchintospring · 05/02/2024 17:27

@Amara123 that is interesting! Good spot.

@YoureRockingTheBoat I think so. I mean he had got into Oxford from a nice middle class family so he had success and relative privilege himself. Clearly he would have been intelligent. I think he might of weakened into being a sneaky creep by seeing first hand the cache that generations of wealth and privilege bring. Maybe 😁

YoureRockingTheBoat · 05/02/2024 22:04

@Marchintospring yes - he was comfortable at that first formal hall until the mathematics guy told him his comfort levels were unwarranted!
