Thinking that Saltburn was incredible

That really. What an amazing, surprising and beautifully made film. Excellent acting, great music and a real twist at the end. 🙂

Meant to say "other than that it was ok"

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2024 07:06

I loved it ,it was so entertaining,I don't care if it wasn't true to life or realistic,it's a film not a documentary. I enjoyed it even more the second time and I rarely watch films more than once.

RichPetunia · 28/01/2024 07:36

Loved it! Watched it as I'd been impressed with Barry K's acting in the Banshees of Innishirin. Felt it didn't need the explanation at the end though and the film would have been better without it
And thanks for reminding me, I'm off now to watch the dance again on you tube😉

It wasn't my cup of tea. I thought it was a silly & try hard. The kind of film that the cool kids describe as beautiful & amazing and everyone just agrees because they don't want to look uncultured and admit it was a bit shit.

I really liked it.

A person would have to be very childlike to think that people who think differently to them are wrong or the collection of waffle you used to say that . Most people grow out of thinking everyone thinks like them at the same stage they realise people can actually see them when they hide behind their hands.

Onheretoomuch · 28/01/2024 07:57

I loved it !

DelilahBucket · 28/01/2024 07:59

It was ok, certainly wouldn't describe it as one of the best. It took me an hour to get into it. Was definitely getting Dahmer vibes, in terms of the personality type, from the beginning though, so the ending was hardly a surprise.

Hated the bloody sex scene with the sister, it was too much for me. But as no one else has mentioned it maybe I'm just too much of a prude, it really bothered me 😂
Other than ok, it was good, not great, but good.

Agree it was cringe. I guess that was the point.

I didn't watch it; my husband did. He is very liberal, nothing shocks him, isnt squeamish, and said he found that scene gratuitous and wanted to turn off at that point. He told me about it and I don't think you're prudish!

squirrelnutkin23 · 28/01/2024 08:17

I loved it too. There were plot holes all over the place but who cares? Visually it was great. A wonderful cast, I loved the parents. And that end scene, just wow.

Some great one liners too. I loved the bit where the mum's wacky friend had died and her response was 'she'll do anything for attention.'

Felt a bit sorry for Felix who did seem like he had a kind heart despite the money and throwaway attitude. You can't blame him for being pissed at Ollie when he lied so blatantly to his face.

One thing I did wonder - was Ollie attempting to kill himself and that's why he drank the wine in the first place? Then had a change of heart and made himself sick and gave it to Felix instead? Also do we think we murdered the sister or just wound her up enough so that she committed suicide? That one was quite a shock.

TheDefiant · 27/01/2024 21:12

How could you say it was a twist??? I saw it coming from almost the beginning. Creepy, creepy, creepy character. Ewwww

I think we all knew he was a creepy little fucker, but the fact it confirmed it was all orchestrated right back to the bicycle / £20 note, showed the level of planning and intent. Prior to that, I just thought he'd maybe taken advantage of a good situation, but it was all pre meditated in minute detail.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/01/2024 08:32

I didn't like it at all... I switched off when they went to visit his parents. I could see exactly where it was going.

As I said in an other thread... all this talk about Saltburn reminds me of the film The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover... you either love it or hate it.

vincettenoir · 28/01/2024 08:33

I loved it. I'm now reading Brideshead Revisited as it's loosely based on that and it's very good too.

jennylamb1 · 28/01/2024 09:37

Yes, the final scene was great and mostly in one take it seems which was really accomplished. The choice of Murder on the Dance Floor with 'l'm going to burn this godamm house right down,' as the final words was a master stroke I thought. I Understand that it was a bit grim in places, however have adored Richard E. Grant from Withnail and I onwards and thought that the film said some interesting things about class. Not wealth but the sense of privilege- the idea that Felix picked people up and dropped them all the time, the sisters assessment of Oliver as a 'moth.'

I found it really entertaining and great fun. I liked how he seeded his future relationship with the mother - that little scene was sharply done where he drops the awkward northern kid guise for a moment and knocks her off balance for a split second with the “it can’t have have been easy for Venetia… having a mother like you” and his whole body language changes, and then he flips back into grateful poor, where he’s supposed to be.

Don’t understand how he could possibly have passed off her death though!! She was far and away the worst person of the four of them, right?

I liked the maths guy too. He was a lovely touch. More of him at Oxford than Felix!

Kangaboo · 28/01/2024 10:06

I thought Saltburn wasn’t a patch on The Talented Mr Ripley (it had a very similar premise)

The toffs were played well by, er, toffs. Found it hard to believe that Barry suddenly became sexually magnetic one on one.

The ‘reveal’ was laughable & didn’t credit the viewers with any intelligence. Honing in on the jibberish text on the laptop, no really, I thought it was just coincidence he was in the cafe!

Barry really wasn’t a natural dancer, it looked awkward & orchestrated to me, not like a man exuberant at his ‘win’’.

The best bits were that Oxford looked stunning & they knew how to throw a party (though I thought the angel wings idea was nicked from Baz Lehmann’s Romeo and Juliet)

Not original enough. I’d give it a 5/10.

Kangaboo · 28/01/2024 10:10

The maths guy character at Oxford reminded me of the recent Jeffrey Dahmer series.

Oh yes I love the Talented Mr. Ripley too. I definitely found them built off the same premise but Saltburn was more of a comedy, more of the Whitnail and I ilk and TMR was more serious.

LorlieS · 28/01/2024 10:14

Loved it. Bonkers in parts but think that was deliberate.

Moveoverdarlin · 28/01/2024 10:18

I thought it was very very good. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/01/2024 10:25

BringItOnxxx · 27/01/2024 19:35

Loved it. Saw Poor Things recently as well and it was also brilliant.

I do wonder if there's a correlation between those you liked one and the other.

Agree I thought it was great, although the bathwater scene made me physically wretch.

Breakingpoint1961 · 28/01/2024 15:24

@ABwithAnItch I was going to comment on that sex scene. I'm no prude either but I thought it was thoroughly revolting and just really not needed! Almost turned it off at that point, but continued as I was waiting for the 'ahh yes' moment which never happened..

HausofHolbein · 28/01/2024 15:43

How has no-one mentioned the grave-shagging yet? 😂

CrystalDelta · 30/01/2024 17:07

It was good and not what I was expecting. I had to close my eyes during the bath scene, but overall I thought it was great.

What a strange thing to say. We all like different things, doesn’t make anyone’s taste better, or more refined, just unique to them.
I really enjoyed this. Hated banshees of inisherin though, bizarre, pointless shite imo (fantastic acting though from all). So does that make me half a sheeple? Maybe a sheeplet 🤷‍♀️🙄

PersephonePomegranate · 30/01/2024 17:29

I loved it for pure fun and entertainment value. The actor playing Felix was also rather easy on the eye .

It's the first film in ages I'd actually watch again.
