Saw this today and thought it was a lovely film. I thought it was just going to be a comedy but it was much more.

Fabulous film 👏

roycroppersshopper · 21/01/2024 11:00

Went to see it yesterday, totally agree. It was funny and moving and really well acted.

Clearv13w · 21/01/2024 11:30

We all loved it.

It’s one of the best films I’ve seen in years. It made me really think about why it’s important to connect with others.

tobee · 22/01/2024 17:26

Saw it Saturday with Dh. We both thought a proper film that treats the audience like a grown up. Fabulous acting. Looked great and I thought the basic concept (of being held over ) was such a good idea.

Oblomov23 · 22/01/2024 17:39

Liked it. Thought it was good.

IsThePopeCatholic · 22/01/2024 17:41

I really enjoyed it. Great acting.

hopeishere · 23/01/2024 19:16

Loved it. Great acting. Christmas classic in the making!

NewYear24 · 23/01/2024 19:39

I loved it.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 23/01/2024 19:47

Thank you! This is the only film at my local cinema on my day off in Feb.I've just booked it.

EachandEveryone · 24/01/2024 17:57

I’m glad to see this as I’ve just booked it at posh pictures for this Saturday. I wanted to go and see Poor Things but I think I’m on my own on that one.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 24/01/2024 18:06

The trailer for this looks really poor - sentimental and completely predictable. Glad to hear the actual film is way better!

Heybarbie1028 · 24/01/2024 23:52

I saw this tonight at the cinema. I thought the trailer was good so I was looking forward to it anyway… I loved it. Such a good film - as others have said, funny but also very moving. I was crying at the end. Highly recommend giving this a watch!

OtterInDisgrace · 25/01/2024 01:17

It was OK, but only that. Love Alexander Payne and Sideways is a true favourite of mine, but this was just OK. Not understanding any of the awards buzz. Especially not at the expense of the sublime Saltburn.

IPartridge · 25/01/2024 13:30

I saw the trailer after I'd watched the film and was glad I hadn't seen it in advance. It gives away too much of the story (as trailers usually do) and made it look more wacky that it actually was.

I'm in two minds about this. I love Paul Giamatti but from the Trailer this just looks like the same story I've seen lots of times before. Mismatched couple who can't stand each other thrown together by circumstance where they are forced to spend time in each others' company, and lo and behold they slowly learn to like/love/respect each other.

Is there more to it than that?

PurpleSoap · 26/01/2024 05:34

I absolutely loved this film. One of the best newer releases I've seen.

Is there more to it than that?

The concept itself is a pretty common one but it's generally all in the execution, and the film executed it well. The dynamic between teacher / pupil is a little fresher than your standard relationship tropes. Characters are well-written and complex, and the actors' micro-expressions are a treat to behold on a large screen. The vintage feel of the film (graininess, old-fashioned title sequences, amazing attention to detail) gave the illusion of an old beloved classic on a re-release. Watching it was definitely an experience.

IPartridge · 26/01/2024 12:13

Its not just about 2 characters. Don't want to give anything away, but there's definitely more to it.

I’m going tomorrow can’t wait now

BrandyandGinger · 26/01/2024 19:50

I'm going to see it this weekend. The Descendents is my favourite Alexander Payne film. I rewatched it recently with my DD and it she loved it too. Every character in it is fully fleshed out and the family dynamic is so believable. It's a gem of a film.

Yes.

Sentimental: yes
Completely predictable: yes

It is more than that, and enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and some great performances, but I am honestly a bit baffled by the accolades.

Britpopbaby · 27/01/2024 17:07

It was a fab film with well developed character and more to the title than the simple premise in my opinion. Great performances and the screening I went to was full.

EachandEveryone · 27/01/2024 18:53

Yes it was full today but it is a Saturday. It’s a lovely film in the same vein Are you there god it’s me, Margaret? Is. It’s not me blowing though. The acting is great but it’s not a classic for me.
