Just watched this on Netflix and really loved it. Just so refreshing to have a film focused on the achievements and friendship of two women over 60, played by two brilliant actors. There’s a lot of swimming involved but you really don’t have to be interested in swimming to enjoy. It.

And it has Jodie Foster in it (and it took me a bit to recognise her!! ) ! Nice to see her again! Yep, totally agree OP, nice movie. Talk about determination!!!
Loved the line when at the pool JF is asked " how long will she be" , and the reply " 8 hours or so!! " Loved it!
Different movie, refreshing is the right word!

I wasn’t keen on the film, but I absolutely loved Jodie Foster in this, as watchable and charismatic as ever. I wish she’d do more films.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 03/12/2023 09:30

I loved it. Very interesting personalities to watch. I'd love to have that level of drive.

iwantavuvezela · 03/12/2023 09:31

Really loved this film. such grit and determination

Sturmundcalm · 03/12/2023 15:39

like a pp I didn't love the film - was ok but wouldn't rave about - but did love Jodie Foster in it. was a fascinating story, cannot imagine THAT level of endurance.

CroccyWoccy · 04/12/2023 10:45

I read a couple of articles afterwards about Diana Nyad - she seems to be quite a divisive figure in the world of marathon swimming and there's some controversy about the standing of her Cuba-Florida swim. But I thought the film covered her divisiveness quite openly - she was not portrayed a particularly "likeable" character (but I think likability is very overrated in books/film/tv!) and I'm not that concerned about whether her swim was officially a record or not, it's just interesting to try to understand what drives someone to pursue this kind of goal.

Ultimately I thought Anette Bening and Jodie Foster made it compelling- in the hands of lesser actors it could have got quite tedious but I could have watched the pair of them all day.

I enjoyed it and thought the lead performances were good. I hope it paves the way for
more stories about women and therefore parts for actors over what is seen as their prime in terms of age. The more people watch the more of a demand!

Lastexmouse · 10/12/2023 16:53

This is good to hear. Wanted to watch a film yesterday eve, but DH dismissed Nyad ( along with a lot of other suggestions!) .

Will watch it.

Hels20 · 11/12/2023 21:03

Another one who has just watched it - and also saw both Bening and Foster have been nominated for Golden Globes. Diana wasn’t likeable but her determination was amazing. I thought it dealt really well with the illusions she must have suffered from. Also liked Rhys Ifans -‘one of his better roles.

CountTo10 · 24/12/2023 21:37

Watched this today. Not usually my sort of thing but really enjoyed it. Jodie Foster and Annette Benning were outstanding. Didn't recognise Rhys Irfans for ages but probably because he was speaking in an American accent.

Really inspiring story and thought provoking. I'm approaching 60 and will be thinking about what I want to do with my 'one precious life'. However rest assured it will not involve swimming anywhere! 😂😂😂

mikado1 · 03/01/2024 01:12

Just finished it. Really enjoyed it. Absolutely love Annette Bening.

BrandyandGinger · 13/01/2024 22:20

I loved it. It was refreshing to see a film about a tough as nails woman in her 60s.

1975wasthebest · 23/01/2024 14:50

Both ladies today received Oscar nominations for their superb performances 🥳

CroccyWoccy · 23/01/2024 15:40

Well deserved!

I’m just watching it. Annette plays these parts really well. I just love Jodie and the way she’s managed to live her life

OctogenarianDecathlete · 01/02/2024 11:17

I'm off work sick today and just watched Nyad.

What a fantastic film. I loved the story, I love the actors.

So great to see real women's faces and bodies. Great to see difficult women portrayed.

Fantastic

This.

I'd like more films with real, tough women in them please

the80sweregreat · 04/02/2024 18:40

Such an uplifting amazing film
Love all the actors in it and the real people looked like them too!
Such an inspiration.

BrandyandGinger · 04/02/2024 19:21

I remember reading that Annette was cast in The Kids are All Right because the director wanted an actress in her 50s who had never had plastic surgery and she was the obvious choice.

Hels20 · 04/02/2024 19:26

@BrandyandGinger - that’s really interesting. I don’t think Jodie Foster has either and she looks beautiful I think. Loving her in the new detective series.

have always been a fan of Annette Bening - love her choice of roles and how she has led her life. Love her comment to Beatty when she found out she was pregnant “you can come along for the ride or not. But I am doing this with or without you.” And then he married her.

BrandyandGinger · 04/02/2024 20:08

I watched Maid on Netflix recently and Andie MacDowell seems to be totally natural as well. Granted, she was always stunning but she looks amazing with her natural grey hair.

Newgirls · 09/02/2024 08:47

Excellent film. Two strong women having an adventure. I loved the supporting cast too - how the navigation and marine knowledge were so key. I read a review saying the back story wasn’t rich enough but I thought it was handled well and the focus rightly was on Diana in the present

CroccyWoccy · 06/06/2024 14:39

Just bumping this to say the documentary “The Other Shore” on Netflix at the moment is really worth your time. Love the relationship between Diana and Bonnie - Jodie Foster and Annette Bening captured it perfectly in the film.

I loved this film and I only watched it because of your recommendation, way back in November! Thank you. I know it didn't stick totally to the actual story but I don't mind a bit of dramatisation, as long as I know. I will also give the documentary a watch too.

CroccyWoccy · 08/06/2024 06:09

Ah I’m glad someone else watched based on my recommendation, and that you enjoyed it!

The documentary focuses largely on two of the failed attempts and then almost skips through the last failed attempt and the final successful attempt - not sure if that was an editing decision or due to practicalities of filming or what - personally I’d have like more time on these other attempts too, but nevertheless it was great. I think the documentary captured the sheer intensity of the physical challenge in a way that’s almost impossible if you’re not actually putting your body through it - the pain and the exhaustion.

Real-life Bonnie I loved even more than Jodie Foster’s version and I thought Diana herself came across slightly more sympathetic and vulnerable than in the film, but still absolute pure grit. I’m totally in awe of them both and of their relationship.
