I defo recommend 👌
I watched it last week and it was one of the best films I've seem this year. Phoebe was magnificent and I felt like I was watching classic Indie from the 80's. I didnt want the film to finish!

We didn't enjoy it. I could've done with an hour less of chase scenes and the kids were not keen on the time travel element.

I don't know why no one makes 90 minute films any more.

I loved the film, but I do agree that it was too long, as are most films nowadays!

WoopWoopThisIsTheSoundOfThePolice · 04/07/2023 18:20

Was it loads better than the crystal skull? That was dire and ruined the franchise for us.

FrippEnos · 04/07/2023 18:21

Good to know, thanks OP.
Does anyone know if any of the original movies are on Netflix or Prime to watch in the run-up ? (we're going Sat)

They are on Disney +

Infinitely better. It was a proper Indiana Jones romp!

medianewbie · 04/07/2023 19:37

@FrippEnos thank you. I don't have that so might have a scoot round the charity shops to look for dvds as ASD Dd his refusing to go 'unless we see the originals first' (we have, dear reader, we have)

Bennyjoon · 04/07/2023 20:40

They’ve been showing the old films on Film4 - they may be repeated or on catch up.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 04/07/2023 22:19

Saw this today- brilliant!

Bennyjoon · 05/07/2023 21:58

I saw this today and thought it was… ok. Better than the Crystal Skull but that’s not saying much.
There were too many chase scenes - car, boat, train. I had difficultly seeing the opening scene as it was so dark!
And where was the humour?
But I thought PWB was good, better than I thought she’d be. And I liked the ending.
I’m now off to Google the C.D. (I’m so ignorant!).

squashyhat · 03/07/2023 08:17

Are there lots of in jokes? Do you need an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the previous films to enjoy it?

No, but you do need to know your history! It’s really good.

Nowaybak · 06/07/2023 14:32

I enjoyed it, especially the ending. PWB was better than I expected. Loved the teenager.
But I have no taste as I’m looking forward to Barbie🫣

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 06/07/2023 18:04

Thr ending was epic, genius 😂

NewspaperTaxis · 08/07/2023 20:35

It's a proper blockbuster, full on. But it didn't have the charm and magic of the best Indy films.
I'm not one for trigger warnings but perhaps I'm getting sensitive in my old age - if you had a relative who committed suicide via hanging the opening scene may not be to your liking. Anyone who drowned underwater, there is a villain death which is truly horrid, despite the fact they 'deserved' it. These two moments stayed with me, along with various murders early on that don't quite seem in the Indy vein.
The opening scene is well done but visually dark and the Nazis seem a nasty, charmless bunch - now, that's an odd critique for sure! Yet the Nazis in 1 & 3 were charming, in a Bond villain 'let me host you for dinner before I kill you' kind of way. The Nazis here seemed like the ones you get in those dodgy but highly enjoyable late night Nazi zombie films, Dead Snow is an example.
Then it gets very frenetic and the action is hard to reconcile with Ford's advanced years, where he looks like he might have a fall, especially as early scenes seem to want to emphasise this.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge seems like a bona fide movie star to me but the script does make her fairly unlikeable.
A lot of watching this is sort of trying to reconcile it with the old Indy films and thinking 'Yep, that's totally it!' and then nitpicking when it really isn't.
Not sure they should have action scenes for Indy in his homeland of the US, there's a Clark Kent aspect to his character - at home he's the bespectacled academic, abroad he has the hat and the whip and he's the action hero.

Dd & I watched the 1st 3 over the last 3 eves & then the new 1 this afternoon. Marvellous. Enjoyed seeing our - very- local viaduct (we talked to the film crew when they were here but sadly didn't see HF or PWB both of whom were on top form in the film I thought). AB was a bonus too. Music fab. Special effects great. A long enjoyable treat !!

roses2 · 09/07/2023 13:04

I saw it last night, loved the time travel part!

But I didn't follow the part about his wife Marion. Did she die in a previous movie? Several characters referred to her and their son having died.

Bennyjoon · 09/07/2023 14:41

No she didn’t die. Their son did. But the grief of it all killed their marriage.

colouringindoors · 14/07/2023 21:04

Just seen it. I saw the first one in the cinema as a young child and really enjoyed it. Made a big impression.
I enjoyed this one, there were lots of nods and echoes to previous films esp 1 and 2. I loved Indy's last scene. But the charm and humour weren't really there and there were a lot of civilian deaths which weren't in no.1. Phoeboe was mainly Fleabag without the sex but still good to have a feisty female character. But I enjoyed the location filming and I'm glad I went. Feels like the end of an era.

Fuckitydoodah · 14/07/2023 21:13

I'm taking DC to see it tomorrow. I remember me and my brother loving the temple of doom and raiders of the lost ark when we were a similar age. I'm pleased to read that the majority of people have enjoyed it. 2.5hrs does seem like a long time though. So many films are 20-30mins too long nowadays.

BoobyDazzler · 14/07/2023 21:13

We loved it too, especially the ending!

mizu · 14/07/2023 21:27

Booked to go and see it on Sunday with my DDs 17 and 18. So excited. Think I'll feel a bit emotional too though.

lampformyfeet · 14/07/2023 21:31

We gave it5/10. It was too much like the others and too full of unnecessary scenes irrelevant to the storyline. The chase in the city went on far too long.

Hyppogriff · 14/07/2023 21:34

Me too !

Well if youve seen the film, since she (SPOILER ALERT turns up at the end END OF SPOILER) you can't surely think she had died. They made it clear it was the son had died.

We took the kids (13, 12 and 11) to see it today, having recently watched all the other Indy films, and we all enjoyed it. I don't ever remember any of the films being known for comedic value (although we all find Willie funny in Temple of Doom).

It was an adventure film in the Indy style and none of us were bored.

Having rewatched the Crystal Skull more recently it wasn't as bad as I remember. Ray Winstone is the most irritating aspect of that film.

memoriesofamiga · 15/07/2023 18:33

A point about the CGI de-aging though. I thought it was excellently done, but as with all this technology, I wonder how quickly it will look dated....

BestIsWest · 15/07/2023 19:09

Though there was a bit too much train/car/horse/van/whatever chasing and they could have cut it by 45 minutes but by the end I was really enjoying it. I mean, it’s daft but fun.

Almahart · 15/07/2023 19:22

I'm taking my 12 yo to see this tomorrow, really looking forward to it
