I'm hoping An Cailín Ciún wins best foreign language film. It's a lovely movie, well worth a watch. Carrie Crowley deserved a nomination for her part in it.

Hoping too Kerry Condon gets Best Supporting Actress for her part in The Banshees of Inisherin and Barry Keoghan wins Best Supporting Actor for his fantastic but heartbreaking portrayal in Banshees also.

I wasn't a fan of the film but delightful by its nominations.

The frocks were almost all gorgeous !

I've only got as far as Lady Gaga and Rihanna so far, and gorgeous is definitely not the word coming to mind ...

I think LG's could actually have been fabulous if it had been 'risque' instead of totally showing her arse (and if it hadn't had a visible band round her waist underneath for some reason). It just went too far.

Rihanna's there is no saving!

I'd be seriously pissed if I had gotten all dolled up to go to the Oscars and this lady was sitting in the row in front of me blocking my view for the whole evening!

I did say “almost” 😊

I think it will all be very dull this year. Everyone will be on their very best behaviour to avoid any kind of upset in the wake of the Chris Rick / Will Smith ruckus. It will be very bland. Even the red carpet has been changed to beige!! (Sorry, champagne 🙄)

How can an Asian woman in her sixties winning best actress for an insane fantasy -science fiction- family drama comedy be dull?

And an Asian child star from Indiana Jones who had not acted for decades winning best supporting actor?

ArtfulPuss · 13/03/2023 10:47

Pleased for Michelle Yeoh, but also disappointed for Cate Blanchett – she is magnificent in Tár. Also pleased for JLC but loved Stephanie Hsu too...

  • Most pleased of all that Women Talking won best adapted screenplay!

The Times has it, I think, with the "cuddly at the expense of quality". It's about the life stories of the actors and actresses, not the performance.

Everything is just really nice.

I’ll be honest, I thought Judd Hirsch’s few minutes in The Fabelmans was the absolute best of that film.

Ke Huy Quan was good in EEAAO (that feels like a refrain from Old MacDonald), certainly, but I felt Hirsch and Keoghan gave better performances.

It’s often heavily skewed to make up for the previous year. Judi Dench didn’t deserve an Oscar for 3 minutes in Shakespeare In Love, she got it because she’d been cheated on the last one.

Plus someone played a disability, illness or “ugly” is major Oscar fodder. Born On The Forth Of July, Philadelphia, Children Of A Lesser God etc etc.

They laugh about it in the ace comedy Get Shorty - “No, his best part was when he played the disabled guy who climbed Mount Whitney..”

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 13/03/2023 11:31

I m suspicious that they nominated so many Irish actors etc, in order to fill the audience with Irish soft skills and amiability in contrast from last year's rukus......

Suspisch.

Kazzyhoward · 13/03/2023 11:39

Highlight for me was John Travolta's emotional speech re the actors (and support) lost over the year, especially his "hopelessly devoted" nod to Olivia Newton John whose picture appeared first on the (in memoriam) picture gallery, getting the recognition she deserved for a lifetime devoted to her singing, acting and charitable work! It must have been so hard for him after losing so many people, including Olivia and Kirstie last year, and his wife and son previously.

I think that's the way of the World now unfortunately. Just look at Dragon's Den - the "emotional" entrants with a back story nearly always win backing even if their product is total crap!

purpledalmation · 13/03/2023 11:47

I thought the story of the Asian child actor now grown up and won an award. Retired 20 years and decided to return to acting just as the director was looking for the kid from goonies. Strange and lucky.

SnottyLottie · 13/03/2023 12:48

Why were Kimmel and Cocaine Bear hassling Malala?

drpet49 · 13/03/2023 12:59

So pleased Jamie Lee Curtis won. Shame Angela Bassett was such a sore loser.

Salome61 · 18/03/2023 15:16

My daughter's boyfriend Ross White and his co-producer Tom Berkeley wrote and produced the short film An Irish Goodbye, it received a BAFTA and an Oscar. It's now on BBCIplayer as well as going on tour.

LadyEloise1 · 19/03/2023 09:38

I watched it last week, the night before the Oscars. It was very good and I'm delighted they got the Oscar.
Fantastic achievement.
Did your daughter get to the Oscars and to the BAFTA ceremony ? How exciting m.
You'll have to name change now. Smile

Sorry I missed your post. My daughter did go to the BAFTA, and when she got back she flew out to LA with the crew and some of her boyfriend's family. They were all watching the Oscars from a friend's house, weren't allowed into the theatre. I joined NOW TV to watch last Monday night at midnight. She's back at work in NI now, she's a computing sculptor for video games.
