I'm hoping An Cailín Ciún wins best foreign language film. It's a lovely movie, well worth a watch. Carrie Crowley deserved a nomination for her part in it.

Hoping too Kerry Condon gets Best Supporting Actress for her part in The Banshees of Inisherin and Barry Keoghan wins Best Supporting Actor for his fantastic but heartbreaking portrayal in Banshees also.

I wasn't a fan of the film but delightful by its nominations.

@Greatly

A completely unwarranted dig at Americans there.
The book is widely read in schools - DS did it in a War and Literature course.

Poor you! I thought it was a beautiful film. I did see it in the cinema which may have helped.

I enjoyed it too.

I'm trying to understand why they loved a perfectly average war film quite so much. Particularly one that isn't very true to the book.

It's so exciting to see an Irish language film, let alone one nominated for an Oscar.

Hope this is the beginning of the huge recognition Carrie Crowley deserves.

I agree @mathanxiety

I loved Top Gun, but lordy it's no Oscar film ...

But by "Oscar standard" today, nor is Titanic, or Gladiator (which I think both won best picture but I've not checked!).

Oscar worthy has become "very serious and critically acclaimed but not actually what most people think of as a great film" which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I do think it's partly why people don't watch the Oscars anymore.

SomersetBrie · 26/01/2023 16:22

Loved An Cailín Ciúin, a very accurate take on the fabulous novella Foster.

Didn't love Banshees but thought the performances were all great, especially Barry Keoghan.

Hmmmm, maybe. Of those two, I'd actually forgive Gladiator as it's marvellous, but not Titanic. 😂

I don't suppose Forrest Gump feels like a natural for it either, but I wouldn't argue with that.

Exactly!

Also it's not just Americans voting for the nominations. Plenty of Brits as well, I guess they're stupid too.

m.imdb.com/list/ls009480135/

This shows all the best picture winners. There are quite a few in there that there is no way would get the nod today. Rocky won best picture - Rocky!!

dreamingbohemian · 26/01/2023 21:37

It is interesting to look at that list! Everything in the 80s and 90s, well up to Return to King, those are mostly films that were very popular as well as critically acclaimed.

I don't think the problem is that they won't give awards to popular movies anymore, it's that the most popular movies aren't as interesting as they used to be. It's all superhero movies and sequels and reboots.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 26/01/2023 22:37

Yeah that's true, cinema is a bit of a desert these days. It's one reason I really liked Top Gun - I know it was a sequel but the 30 year gap lessened that "we've been here before" feeling, and it was a big, epic movie that didn't involve capes and superpowers.

I am amazed All Quiet On The Western Front got so many noms. I thought it was pretty standard. I mean the book is brilliant but they changed the film for the worse IMO. I can only assume Americans have never heard of the book and its all news to them.

I thought it was generally a really boring list apart from Paul Mescal as best actor which was an absolute delight.

What a silly statement.

You do realise that All Quiet On The Western Front also received 14 BAFTA nominations last week.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 26/01/2023 22:48

Interestingly, All Quiet on The Western Front won best picture in 1930 - does that technically make this one a reboot?! 😉

JadeSeahorse · 26/01/2023 22:56

OnaBegonia · 24/01/2023 16:45

Top Gun is possibly one of the worst movies I've seen in recent years, how it even got nominated is a mystery.

This!

We watched this at home and it was so bad both DH and I cried with laughing. 🤣

The acting was dire!

What's silly? I was really surprised at it's success. That's OK isn't it? I was wrong about Americans never having read the book, I admit.

waltzingparrot · 28/01/2023 18:49

I'd love Bill Nighy to get the Best Actor award for Living. That was a role he was born to play.

EachandEveryone · 12/03/2023 17:05

Are we watching tonight? I’ve seen most of the nominations but none of them I’m in love with. It’s quite dull this year.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 12/03/2023 17:10

I think it will all be very dull this year. Everyone will be on their very best behaviour to avoid any kind of upset in the wake of the Chris Rick / Will Smith ruckus. It will be very bland. Even the red carpet has been changed to beige!! (Sorry, champagne 🙄)

SilverWheat · 12/03/2023 17:18

I'd like to see Michelle Yeoh win for Best Actress. Loved Paul Mescal in Aftersun but I think Austin Butler will take Best Actor - I enjoyed his performance in Elvis, he really gave it everything, but didn't love the film overall.

EachandEveryone · 12/03/2023 18:17

I enjoyed Elvis it had sparkle and I loved the music. Im just ploughing through Banshees. Superb acting and scenery but god, its dull.

Southeastdweller · 13/03/2023 07:02

EEAAO just became the third film in history to win three acting Oscars, the last time it happened was 46 years ago.

Angela Bassett looked pissed off when Jamie Lee Curtis won.

LlynTegid · 13/03/2023 08:06

Pleased for Pinocchio.

LadyEloise1 · 13/03/2023 08:24

Delighted for "An Irish Goodbye" and Richard Baneham.
Disappointed for Barry Keoghan who I thought was superb in Banshees, Kerry Condon and "An Cailín Ciúin"
I haven't seen "Everything Everywhere All at Once" or some of the other films.
