Any one seen it. I really enjoyed it. Despite the fact that it isn't filmed in Leicester. And that Is definitely not Leicester Cathedral! But that would I not annoy you if you are Leicester born and bred. Local
Rumour has always been that he was under the social services building. As the site of the Greyfriars was known. Though it's such a bonkers story you just couldn't make it up.

I am going tomorrow with DS. I think the truth of the story has been majorly stretched, and a fair few historians of the period are very annoyed with it.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2022 19:14

Yes, my parents know some of the people from the university. Who are very unhappy with how they are portrayed.

We loved it too! Especially enjoyed the film because we hadn't seen a trailer or heard anything about it at all.

I do wonder if the film wasn't skewed to demonise the University in a way that felt a little extreme. I suspect the truth is somewhere between the film and the university's account.

TugboatAnnie · 08/10/2022 19:21

The whole thing was filmed by channel 4 as it was happening so why only 10 years later do we need a fictionalised account? Reviews aren't very good but I am a Wars of the Roses addict so will probably go to see it.

TugboatAnnie · 08/10/2022 19:39

Just seen that's it's a 'comedy drama'! Why? It's not a funny subject!

erikbloodaxe · 08/10/2022 19:41

Watched it last night. It was all a bit......meh. Sally Hawkins was a poor choice for the job.

bellac11 · 08/10/2022 19:44

I saw the documentary with Simon Farnaby, that was hilarious, mainly because the woman portrayed in the film, was in real life quite dramatic and over involved, she got all emotional and unfortunately it was quite funny

I saw the trailer for the film and the actress playing her is all wrong in my opinion

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2022 23:17

I wondered about the choice of actress as well. It I think The real Phillipa Langley was a producer, and she did actually make an appearance. But why on earth did they not use the actual footage of the reburial. The church used us just so wrong! It really grated. And I'm pretty sure that 'O God of Earth and Altar' was not sung. Though I may be wrong.

@bellac11 yes. She dies come a cross as a bit of a froot loop.

I always thought it was a shame that he wasn't buried near to the Church of St Mary De Castro. As he would have known it. From staying at the castle. And its far more beautiful than the cathedral.

He should be in York! I haven't seen the film yet although I want to. there are so few films around that I have any interest in nowadays. It's all Marvel stuff.

lannistunut · 10/10/2022 13:29

I don't think he should be in York, I think Leicester is the right place.

I thought Sally Hawkins was good, I find her really watchable. I found it an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, but the way it was all a 'feeling' was very odd. It felt quite gappy as a film.

I left wanting to know more about whether the University really were as difficult as portrayed. I do think 'amateurs' are often dismissed, and when I read about it Buckley did raise the funds to pay for the dig - which actually was very cheap, the Uni could easily have stumped that up themselves if they had been interested.

TugboatAnnie · 10/10/2022 14:18

Definitely Leicester over York but I think Fotheringhay church would be more fitting. He was born there and his parents and brother are buried there. On the other hand the village might be overwhelmed so Leicester it is.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/10/2022 19:51

Archeological practice is that any remains are buried in the nearest consecrated ground. Which really is the Cathedral. It's literally across the road from
Where he was found. I don't think people not familiar with Leicester realised it is so close. I love York. But York is already a huge tourist attraction. Let Leicester have this one!

@lannistunut I'll find out from my parents. They went to a lot of talks from the university at the time. My mum is a Ricardian.

Oh yes do, I am so interested in this story. It is ridiculous he was just under a car park. I was fascinated at the discovery and the film has brought it all back. Jealous you know a Ricardian!

Zosime · 10/10/2022 20:56

It's actually quite good for a short break. If you're coming from London/SE, it's a good one to do by train. Premier Inn next door to the station, and the city centre is small enough to walk everywhere if you're averagely fit and mobile. Stamford is about 45 min away on the train - unspoiled historic town worth visiting, with Burghley House nearby.

ancientgran · 10/10/2022 21:03

He was a Catholic, why wasn't he buried in a Catholic cathedral?

Skinnermarink · 10/10/2022 21:03

The museum they built there after is really good actually. And Leicester is a good place for a night away, had fun there. And a great burger at Crafty . We still talk about it four years on 🤣

The cathedral is currently closed for a huge revamp. And the construction of a hideous new song school. No idea why it needs yet more work done when it was reordered for the reburial.

@ancientgran Leicester is in the diocese of Nottingham. No reason to put him in Nottingham Cathedral. (Which happens to be my parish, we don't have space.)

The RC bishop at the time, was getting really irritated by people referring to Richard having a funeral. As he already had one in 1485, no matter how hastily it was done. The correct prayers would have been said.

But why put his body in a CofE Cathedral? He wasn't CofE. He was a Catholic and should have been buried in a Catholic Cathedral/Church/cemetery. Nottingham isn't the only suitable place for a Catholic burial. He was believed to be a very pious Catholic and it seems unlikely that he would have wanted to be buried in anything other than consecrated Catholic ground.

I think it is abhorrent to bury a person of strong religious beliefs in grounds of another faith/denomination.

PaperDoves · 11/10/2022 11:37

I didn't know they had made a film of this! I saw the original BBC documentary in 2012 and it was such a bizarre set of circumstances. The American woman who located him is absolutely a fruit loop (but a very
