Anyone seen it? I've just been with DD and we thoroughly enjoyed it. And now I want a 50s style Dior dress.

I think I'm
Going to go and see it on Monday. I enjoyed the trailers. Went to see the lost king this morning instead.

Juicesausagecake · 08/10/2022 18:14

does anyone remember the original? Also very good. I’m astonished that anyone had it seen it, let alone wanted to remake it!

With Angela Landesbra & Omar Shariff

(Sorry about the name spelling)

I don't remember seeing any previous version. Who played Mrs Harris? I do have vague memories of reading the book a long, long time ago.

I loved that film!

Ah, cross post with @BigFatLiar. Angela Lansbury is a long, long way from how I would picture Mrs Harris.

I enjoyed it, but preferred the book.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 08/10/2022 18:18

I loved the original !

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/10/2022 18:18

I saw it this week, and loved it.

Arenanewbie · 08/10/2022 18:20

  1. She loves 1950s fashion so it was particularly appropriate.

Very enjoyable.

Some Ludicrous plot twists, but very charming and heart warming. Fabulous frocks, of course. I also loved the 50s decor of some of the flats she cleaned.

Love Lesley Manville.

@Toddlerteaplease did you enjoy Lost King? I think I will go tomorrow.

EATmum · 08/10/2022 18:25

Our whole family went and loved it (me, DH and three DDs from teen to adult). Proper escapist fun.

WaggledMyAerialAndWolfedMyCustardCreams · 08/10/2022 18:29

I enjoyed it and, as an amateur sewer loved the scenes in the Dior workroom, but agree that some of the plot twists were ludicrous and visible from five miles away.

Spidey66 · 08/10/2022 18:36

I saw it last week. A real feel good film.

SuperCamp · 08/10/2022 18:52

So good to see quality feel-good films in release. No
murders, violence, sexual assault, women in terror etc. I don’t even want ‘mild peril’ atm.

Winterscomingagain · 08/10/2022 18:56

I loved seeing Vanessa Feltz, her daughter and grandchildren go to it, the little girl had a fascinator on. Anything which makes people want to dress up and enjoy intergenerationally has to be good.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2022 19:00

@SuperCamp yes I did.

londonmummy1966 · 08/10/2022 19:06

I loved the fact that Luciana Arrighi the production designer had actually worked as an in house model at YSL in the 1960s. Amazing to be able to do such a demanding job at the age of 82 as well.

AuntieDolly · 08/10/2022 19:23

I've seen the original and love a bit of whimsy, but my god this was awful. I'd think twice about watching it for free on tv on a wet Saturday afternoon tbh

Titterofwit · 08/10/2022 19:31

I read the book ages ago and couldnt believe that they had made a new film of the story . I agree that most of the plot twists were ridiculous but went with it for a change. I love Leslie Manville and wanted to see her in the dress .
Loved watching the designing and sewing room parts.
And@SuperCamp this is exactly right

I went to see it last weekend with DP, like @SuperCamp I don't want anything stressful to watch. Thoroughly enjoyed it, even though there were some daft plot holes and a continuity error where a blazing fire suddenly went out! The dresses were beyond fabulous <sigh>

Antaboo · 13/10/2022 10:39

If you've read the book and are going to watch the film, my advice is to discard any expectations of seeing a faithful adaptation; it's so far from the book in many ways they should have changed the title of the film!

Other than that it was okay and quite fun, but for me spoilt by losing the spirit of the book, having too many elements that weren't in the book, and some unbelievable moments that require quite a suspension of reality if you have any experience of the 1950's.

Goodness I'm a party pooper today!

Echoes pretty much what we thought. Also could have done with some editing: there seemed to be a lot of padding. Loved the original novella, have memories of the first film version but that one was a bit peculiar. Lesley Manville an excellent choice as lead. My husband had no previous knowledge of the story and we individually rated it 6/10.

Deadringer · 15/10/2022 22:45

It was very silly but I enjoyed it.
