Has anyone else seen this film?

I went to the cinema to see it with my 17yr old and it is still going around in my head. It was funny, sad and gave me a lot to think about.

The basic story is a woman gets to see the different lives she could have lived by making different decisions.

If you saw it do you enjoy it?

@the80sweregreat I think the point was not accepting things!
She changed at the end to try for a better relationship with her daughter ( who she loved but didn’t show it properly).

The editor did an amazing job. Can you even imagine trying to make that load of randomness work as a comprehensible film!

the80sweregreat · 14/03/2023 12:53

I guess that I was do pleased it was all over with I didn't really make much sense of the ending
I just assumed she had accepted that her daughter had a female partner after a lot of soul searching.

SequinsandStilettos · 14/03/2023 19:38

spoiler Yes, she introduces the gf as the gf and she understands that her husband has always meant well/been loyal. Her relationship with her daughter is less fractured. Reminded me a bit of the menstrual panda film Turning Red in that regard. It had promise - I am the demographic for worn-down, split in several roles, where-did-it-all-go-wrong, menopausal with teenage tantrumming put-upon Mother. I had thought it would go into a saving the multiverse kick-ass romance with the other husband but after he died, I felt a bit jaded after that. It taking a darker turn into suicidal ideation/nihilism did nothing to cheer me up and don't get me started on the stupid bagel!

Ah, if only the editor had succeeded!

I've just watched this. I wish I had something insightful to say but I hated it. "Best Picture ", jeez, my head hurts. Off to bed in a bad mood.

I just watched it and I agree, it was a load of incomprehensible twaddle.

Crumpetdisappointment · 17/03/2023 06:28

saw this in prime
who on earth had the idea? the butt plugs? crazy
but engrossing and i enjoyed it

SnowAndFrostOutside · 17/03/2023 08:31

I started watching it and about half way through. I really love it so far. Agree with the view that it portrays the life of a harried middle aged women juggling work, children and parents very well. I can identify so much about it.

If you understand Chinese, there is a bit more background that isn’t obvious. Michelle Yeoh and her dad speaks Cantonese to each other. She, her husband and the daughter speaks mandarin. Michelle Yeoh switches between the two languages on scenes that has both her dad and her husband. It’s very well done. It also is part of the reason the dad doesn’t approve of the husband. I think this must be intentional given one of the writers is also Chinese. I can speak both dialects, same as Michelle Yeoh so can understand all the Chinese dialects.

SnowAndFrostOutside · 17/03/2023 08:32

I mean all the dialogues. Darn autocomplete.

Salverus · 17/03/2023 08:34

It's a good film but the hot dog fingers and butt plug were unnecessarily unpleasant and it was half an hour too long.

Oh that's very interesting @SnowAndFrostOutside and really adds to how excellent I thought it was - lots/most people watching that would have no idea but the writers really thought about the context of that relationship and how to portray it.

Fuwari · 18/03/2023 11:19

I watched this last night, well half of it. As it was just feeling so repetitive. Fight scene, family scene, repeated over and over, leading to an obvious conclusion.

I whizzed through the second hour on triple speed just to see if anything changed. It didn't seem to.

As a concept, great idea. But I felt the delivery was messy and things like the hot dog fingers were just stupid and not even funny.

Orcubed · 18/03/2023 11:33

Absolutely hated it.

Thisisformathilda · 18/03/2023 11:34

Absolute garbage. Had a headache after it.

SwedishDeathCleaner · 18/03/2023 11:35

I really didn't like it - found it utterly tedious. Went to the cinema to see it with some friends and it was agonising to sit through. I felt quite angry by the time it was finally over!

springrises · 18/03/2023 11:38

needed about 30 mins editing of the more ridiculous scenes, like butt plug scene. And the scene featuring the movie's actual director in a ball gag being spanked by Michelle Yeoh felt like exploitation of his position, frankly.

Seeyounextweek · 19/03/2023 01:16

I loved it! But then I really enjoyed The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & the Marvel multiverse films like dr strange. I enjoyed the references to other films, ratouille & crouching tiger costume . I’d recommend to all over 15 I’m not ready for the butt plug conversations with my teens !

Jewel1968 · 19/03/2023 01:40

I was so looking forward to it as I love an alternate universe type story. I didn't enjoy it. I liked the concept and some of the scenes but lots of scenes could have ended up on the editor's floor. It was too long and drawn out. I am amazed it won soooo many Oscars.

I think when a film is a bit quirky it will speak to some and not others. I don't think quirky should be at the expense of a story. For me the story was a bit thin.

NovelFarmer · 19/03/2023 10:32

Hated it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/03/2023 10:41

i wonder if jamie lee curtis was the reason it was highlighted so much
oscars are a funny business
not to say i didnt enjoy it - i did.
it was too long for me but i did sit through until the end, despite starting quite late in the evening

i dont remember the ball gag or spanking?

Zer · 19/03/2023 11:23

I thought it was stupid and chaotic and I really hated the butt plug bits and the sausage fingers. There were a few good bits in it. It was far, far too long.

dudsville · 19/03/2023 11:58

It was long and chaotic, but i thought it was fun. I understood where it was going but i enjoyed that i couldn't anticipate how it would get there. We watched it over two sittings.

At the end. Where instead of everyone fighting, Yeohs character gives everyone what they need to be happy.

That's more script editing/director's decision than film editing. A film editor's role doesn't include removing story beats that have been filmed, even if s/he hates them. The butt plug thing needed to have been drastically reduced. You have this scene of Evelyn fighting with alpha Gong-Gong's henchman while Joy and Waymond are commentating. They have figured out that whenever one of the fighters does something ridiculous they gain powers. You see them in need of a power and you see them all notice the buttplug shaped trophy. That's kind of funny. And then, after a pause, Evelyn should destroys the trophy and the henchman should have looked a bit relieved. That's a little funnier.

And that should have been the end instead you have them fighting on and on. The second henchman doing a slow leap to land on it, then fighting with it protruding out of him. Then the first guy appears with another trophy protruding and they fight until Evelyn removes them. That was just stupid and boring. Beneath the Farrelly brothers, tbh.
