I’ll go first. 1917. I came out of the cinema shell shocked and so much pent up emotion I had to let out. My husband tried to talk to me to ask how I enjoyed it and I told him I couldn’t talk for fear of bursting into tears in the cinema lobby.

One that stayed with me for years, which I can't remember the name of, was of a woman who was kidnapped and buried underground somewhere and she had a tiny tube to allow air into the space, well, coffin. It terrified me for years and gave me nightmares
^
I remember this too.

Underscore21 · 17/06/2022 19:19

I think it was 'the candy snatchers'
Very frightening-based on a real life kidnapping.

In terms of effect on me, definitely Jaws. I was allowed to watch it far too young and I've never been able to swim in the sea again. Ex DH used to laugh when we went away but it affected me so much

BigBadBoom · 17/06/2022 21:01

@underscore21 @jellybellynelly I saw a clip of a film when I was a kid, that haunted me, with a woman that was buried alive. I had nightmares about it, I'm wondering if this was it! Reminds me a bit of the Dutch film the Vanishing, which was truly horrifying. There was an American remake too, not as good but still worth a watch.

itrytomakemyway · 17/06/2022 21:15

I'm surprised at how many people list Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I can't stand the book or the film. All of the sympathy is misplaced - those involved in holocaust education actually advise schools don't use the story. It is fictional. It is not written from the view of the victims of the holocaust. Not a film, but a far more accurate account of the holcaust would be Martin Gilbert's book on the Holocaust. There are accounts in there that are etched on my memory forever.

Anyway, back to the thread. Sickly sweet I know, but two films that left a real impact on me were Dead Poet's Society and Lorenzo's Oil.

Not a film, but a TV film - Sybil. Sally Field is incredible in this. I watched it in my late teens and still remember how poweful this was.

bookworm14 · 17/06/2022 22:18

Totally agree about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, @itrytomakemyway - it’s actively dangerous misinformation and should not be taught in schools.

BigBadBoom · 18/06/2022 10:26

@wishfulthinking1977 whaaaaaat 😱

colouringindoors · 23/07/2022 20:16

Awful impact: Seven
Heartbreaking: Kes

for me most thought provoking is Arrival. The communincation stuff is fascinating but for me the Amy Adams character and the "would you make the same choice if you knew the heartbreak coming" aspect is very touching and timeless.

I remember The Naked Civil Servant starring John Hurt as Quentin Crisp - I was still living in my family home and my dad walking out of the room! It was and is an amazing film, a pioneering film

Sophie’s Choice is the one I was unable to watch again and which haunted me for years

pigalow27 · 23/07/2022 21:19

Crash, The Road, Apocalypse Now

Popsicle33 · 23/07/2022 21:24

Still Life with Eddie Marsan had me sobbing my heart out at the cinema.

Lostmyway86 · 23/07/2022 21:25

The Pianist
The boy in the striped pyjamas
The Road
Schindlers List

Starsarestillthere · 23/07/2022 21:34

The one where Kevin Bacon abuses the boys in a reform school / young people prison. I think it's called flat liners I found that very disturbing

LetHimHaveIt · 24/07/2022 07:41

It's called 'Sleepers'.

fudfootedfannybangle · 24/07/2022 07:50

Leaving Las Vegas - modern bleak set against the dazzling lights of Vegas . I thought I’d love it and had actually bought the DVD because it has two of my favourite actors. I binned it because I didn’t want to ruin someone else’s life by taking it to the charity shop.

SergeiL · 24/07/2022 08:55

Forgot to say Coco. Big ugly sobbing at the end, every single time.

Jellywobblescobbles · 25/07/2022 17:40

Room - although the book impacted me more
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Castaway
Forrest Gump

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 27/07/2022 21:01

The deep end of the ocean. It’s with Michelle phiffer. About a young kid that gets kidnapped. I won’t say to much as to give away the whole story but it really made me decide how I was going to parent my kids. ( I watched it years before I had kids)

partystress · 27/07/2022 21:39

So many that have been listed here. The Truman Show is my all time favourite film.

Just last week though, the NT Live screen of Prima Facie has left me raw. Tried to talk about it today and couldn’t, just filled up with rage and despair and sadness.

Abracadabra12345 · 31/07/2022 22:21

Popsicle33 · 23/07/2022 21:24

Still Life with Eddie Marsan had me sobbing my heart out at the cinema.

Wasn’t that astonishing? I persuaded my DH to watch it and he was also impressed and we often refer to it.

My most recent film was “The Father” starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman. Just wow

coffeepleeease · 31/07/2022 22:57

I couldn't stop thinking about The Impossible for days after I saw it.

AI Artificial Intelligence

Overly long and boring in parts but I still think about that little boy robot who was programmed to love his mum for ever, he waited and waited for her long after she (and the rest of humanity) had died. Sounds far fetched but I cried buckets.

This one - i can't watch it ever again. It makes me so distressed even to think about it.
Inside I'm Dancing really spoke to me about disabled people and entering adulthood for personal reasons
Priest really caught me too
