watched the first one last night was not to bad but not my normal type of film but of course since the second one is out am considering going to see it. i found it a heart warming story but not very funny. is that just me

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 14/11/2004 10:05

The book was much much better. Overhyped in my opinion.

Davros · 14/11/2004 18:26

Didn't find the first one funny? Can't imagine that at all. The second has had very bad reviews but will prob go to see it anyway.

dawnie1 · 14/11/2004 18:31

I saw the first one a long time after it first came out in the cinema so I had heard nearly every women saying how fantastic it was. By the time I got too see it, it had been completely overhyped and I was quite disappointed by it.Will go and see the next one nice and early (hopefully next week).

Lonelymum · 14/11/2004 18:34

I saw it again last night having seen it about a year earlier. Didn't seem as funny as the first time, but perhaps I have also read the book since then and was remembering that.

pineneedle · 14/11/2004 19:30

Funny how your perception of films changes over time, isn't it... thoroughly enjoyed Love Actually at the cinema last year, and thought I would treat myself to it this Christmas on DVD. Wonder if it will still be good.

Ditto Elf. !!!!!

lou33 · 14/11/2004 19:38

Personally I will boycott everything Richard Curtis makes in future. Love Actually makes my blood boil

Tinker · 14/11/2004 19:45

Used to read the columns when first appeared in the Indie - found them funny then. Saw some of the film last night (never having seen it before) It was awful, very unfunny.

pineneedle · 14/11/2004 20:09

Lou33 - sorry, yes, forgot that word was used. Better just stick to Elf. .

Hope there wasn't anything offensive in that either... see, don't think I can trust my long term memory!

babster · 14/11/2004 20:16

Saw the sequel last night - not a patch on the book, but Colin was pretty gorgeous (if a bit unsympthetic, even for Mark Darcy). The best bit was seeing Pui from CBeebies as a Thai prisoner. Renee looked awful - why do they make her fatten up so much? I always imagine Bridget thinking she's fat, not as a bona fide hamster!

Caron · 14/11/2004 20:20

Lou33 - curious as to why Love Actually made your blood boil???

Hulababy · 14/11/2004 21:54

Caron - see here

Moomin · 15/11/2004 16:23

i don't think she is fat, actually babster. Her face is pudgy which might make her seem fat but if you look at her when she had her pyjama bottoms and vest top, for eg, her belly certainly wasn't hanging out like mine would be in the same ensemble! She also affects a funny walk which makes her look more 'stomachy'.
Enjoyed the film in a more gentle way than the last. Though hugh grant had the best lines again and, although i wasn't looking forward to the cleaver/darcy fight as i thought it would be a re-hash of the last, it was actually the funniest bit of the film. Only bit i laughed out loud at.

lou33 · 15/11/2004 16:26

sorry caron, just saw your post. I believe hulababy has directed you to my rant

strawberry · 15/11/2004 16:43

I thought the 2nd BJ book was poor but saw the film last week and was entertaining. Ok so it's not greatest film but nice, gentle rom com.

I don't get the thing about her weight. In the book she is around 9st but constantly frets like we all probably do!. I thought that was the whole point - not fat but desperate to be thinner. Don't know why they've made her bigger in the film...

candy · 15/11/2004 19:45

I shouldn't imagine she IS much bigger than 9 stone in the film is she? Not seen the 2nd film but in the 1st it's just lots of close ups of her bum and boobs and the fact that she's got such teeny little eyes that seem to make her look big - she looks about a size 12 to me. I think it's more the fact that most other "heroines" are about size 8 that make her seem huge in comparison.

tiredemma · 19/11/2004 11:23

i went last night with my 3 girlie pals and thought it was really hilarious, especially where bridget is skiing!

bakedpotato · 19/11/2004 12:18

thought no2 much much worse than 1st one (which,to be fair, i quite enjoyed). as well as all the repeated setpieces (bj's arse on TV, huge knickers, crappy man-fighting) was there anyone in the film to warm to? Bridget = dozy twat. Darcy = tedious/pompous/really rather unpleasant. H. Grant not bad though.
i found it impossible to work out what bridget and darcy saw in each other and would happily have smashed both of their heads against the wall. don't remember finding bridget this irritating first time around. i always felt quite warm towards her. now she seems truly pathetic.
please don't go!

DaddyCool · 25/11/2004 11:38

DW went with her mates and said it was rubbish. She said the Trailer for Star Wars - Ep.3 was better than the entire bridget jones movie!

belledejour · 26/11/2004 21:11

Have to admit I loved it - went with 6 girlfriends so could enjoy every moment without having a yawning, fidgeting dh next to me. Renee Z did look pretty terrible - jowly and red-faced and stringy haired - but was a novelty to come out of the cinema feeling I was just as attractive/even more so than the heroine (don't get that feeling after an Angelina Jolie film somehow).

Went out for a pizza first and spent the meal sniggering at two friends who proclaimed love (or lust, at least) for Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, then had to eat my words cos they were bloody gorgeous!

tearful · 26/11/2004 21:33

Am I the only one who thought the fight scene was absolutely hilarious and brillinatly done?!

tiredemma · 27/11/2004 10:14

no tearful, i also thought that was hilarious, especially when darcy jumped back into the water feature to get daniel. v funny.
i thought all of it was funny really.

miam · 27/11/2004 10:28

I really enjoyed the film and genuinly laughed out loud at lots of it (loved the sky-diving and skiing scenes) but then again, I'm easily pleased (and Mr Darcy certainly pleases me...) Everyone likes different kinds of comedy, it does not mean to say that if a film does not appeal to your personal sense of humour then it is rubbish.

noddy5 · 27/11/2004 11:08

The 1st one was on tv and was good enough as a tv film but otherwise quite dull won't be seeing no.2 in a hurry

suedonim · 27/11/2004 11:56

I enjoyed the second film. I wasn't expecting a high cinematic experience, just a few laughs and an easy-to-follow storyline and that's what I got. I loved the fight scene too and also Bridget trying to walk in that tight evening dress. I think her parents are adorable, esp long-suffering Dad.

Davrosthesnowman · 05/12/2004 11:55

Saw this the other night and enjoyed it. Not a patch on the first one though and full of "devices" but the Jeremy Paxman scene is worth seeing the whole film for! .....tosser!
