The film with Joaquin Phoenix is AMAZING I’ve watched it A LOT and I love it. Joaquin is utterly amazing.

Saucery · 17/10/2021 17:24

It is outstanding. Not an easy watch in places, but the reinterpretation of the backstory and the nods to the film King Of Comedy are extremely well done.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 17/10/2021 17:26

Fabulous, thought provoking film

Lynne1Cat · 17/10/2021 17:26

I saw this at the cinema, LOVED it. Watched it at home again, noticed bits I had missed. A GREAT film.

BuckyBarnesArm · 17/10/2021 17:28

Great film, very dark. Joaquin is amazing. It reminded me of Taxi Driver.

Cocolapew · 17/10/2021 17:30

Fantastic film, Joaquin Phoenix is amazing in it.

NotJustACigar · 17/10/2021 17:33

This film is amazing. For anyone who thinks they won't like it because they don't like comics/batman etc, that is totally irrelevant. Watch it if you like deeply disturbing but highly original cinema, you won't regret it.

DaisyNGO · 17/10/2021 17:36

It's astonishing
I loved it

I know nothing about Batman but that's not at all needed

I really think it's one of the best films ever. I didn't find it that disturbing, maybe I got inured after so many reviews saying "horribly disturbing".

JP is so brilliant.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2021 17:37

oh thank you

that's one for tonight perhaps

It's absolutely fantastic! It's my favourite film & I've probably watched it once a week since it came out 😂😂 enjoy!!

Saucery · 17/10/2021 17:39

My interest in Batman starts and ends with the Christopher Nolan films, although I have soft spot for the Michael Keaton version as that has a bit of an ‘edge’ to it too.
How ‘monsters’ are made is turned on its head in this film.

iklboo · 17/10/2021 17:44

Yes absolutely. And the best line isn't even spoken.

'The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.”

freshcarnation · 17/10/2021 17:44

It's a remarkable performance, but I'd be careful watching it if you are affected by films that show mental health issues. It could be pretty triggering.

DaisyNGO · 17/10/2021 17:51

If you watch it, please let us know what you think

No spoilers, but I was surprised to hear the different interpretations of different people.

StuntNun · 17/10/2021 17:56

It is not a feelgood film but it is an outstanding film and well worth a watch. Just prepare to be a little depressed when you've watched it.

iklboo · 17/10/2021 19:10

It's probably JP's finest performance. Everything is in it - humour, pathos, anger, love. It's a riveting portrayal.

BrainBleachNeeded · 17/10/2021 21:43

Watched it in the cinema and watched it on prime on Friday. Brilliant film. Really relevant to our times and very thought provoking.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2021 22:57

i did enjoy it, it was very relevant to our times,
i had sympathy with him,
it could have gone wrong, but it didnt

also interested to hear what others thought as the one review i briefly saw from The Guardian slammed it

DaisyNGO · 17/10/2021 23:05

Glad you enjoyed it
Does someone need to give a green light for any spoilers to be allowed here?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2021 23:47

spoilers are all right with me Grin

Saucery · 18/10/2021 08:02

Spoilers fine by me, too. I’ve only been able to discuss it with DH and he comes from the viewpoint of changes to the backstory from the graphic novels etc. Interesting, but I think the film went much further than that.

Apparently, the fact that The Joker killed Thomas Wayne wasn’t ever a definite, so the copycat from the riots worked perfectly in this.

Anyone else notice he spoke like his Mother when he ‘became’ the Joker for his big TV appearance?

His laughter was a natural reaction to the state of the world imo. Every bit of awfulness, every bit of violence, made him more powerless.

I did my own gasp/laugh at the fact they used a Gary Glitter song for his dance on the steps.

The King Of Comedy is a film where Robert De Niro stalks a famous comedian (Jerry Lewis). Worth a watch to compare how the blankness and unkindness of ‘celebrity’ is developed in this film.

Anyway, I’ll stop now, but as you can see, I have many Thoughts about it Grin

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/10/2021 08:12

the gary glitter is on The Full Monty, that is all that reminded me of! Grin
i watched it and wondered who they pay

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/10/2021 08:13

i thought his laugh was due to nerves
but it was his mother's fault due to the abuse

Totally agree, it’s a brilliant film and I’ve seen it once but I found it incredibly disturbing and I don’t ever want to watch it again.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/10/2021 08:14

i have not seen any other batman/joker films
