Anyone seen this yet?
I didn’t have a clue what was going on! Certainly not a child friendly film… doubt they’d have a clue either. There were some funny moments though Smile

No I haven't been I plan on watching it soon, was it any good? I've been waiting to watch it for the last few years but worry it has been over hyped now

MynameisFlo · 31/07/2021 22:48

Watched it today. My 10 year and I enjoyed it.

PantsandBoots · 31/07/2021 22:54

Not sure that it made sense. But clean, family action film so that makes it a winner in my book!

Notashandyta · 31/07/2021 22:56

Looking forward to a good popcorn blockbuster! We are watching it tomw with young kids. Ready to turn it off if needed and watch the rest when they've gone to bed.

Love the rock!

Unihorn · 01/08/2021 08:06

We absolutely loved it! Thought it was a really easy to watch family film, similar to Pirates of the Carribean (not surprising given the source material), Indiana Jones, National Treasure etc. but with less of a solid storyline. Loved the casting choices.

We're huge Disney fans however and were mostly just excited to hear all the Jungle Cruise ride spiel used.

Eminybob · 01/08/2021 08:24

We watched it yesterday. The kids (7 and 2.5) weren’t interested but dh and I persevered.

It was ok, not as good as some of the Rocks other similar stuff, like Jumanji or Journey 2 but watchable. The plot was a bit convoluted and OTT but the characters and acting was good. I love the 3 main actors and they didn’t disappoint.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/08/2021 08:26

Why is it a 12A? Would it be scary for a 7 year old?

Unihorn · 01/08/2021 09:04

Our 11 year old was a bit freaked out at times; there's a LOT of snakes, and then bees and undead type people. Common Sense Media is good to check for this. I'd say the majority of the film is fine but there are definitely some creepy parts for a 7 year old, depending on their tolerance.
Eminybob · 01/08/2021 09:47

I didn’t realise it was a 12A tbh.

There is a quite a bit of violence to be fair.

What confused you? I saw it today with my nine year old and while it’s not going to win any prizes for originality, I thought it was good-humoured enough.
Notashandyta · 02/08/2021 09:16

We watched it with 4, 5 and 6 year olds.

Was ready to turn it off but they were fine. A little bored in the second half tbh.

The first half was better.

SirSamuelVimes · 02/08/2021 09:35

It's bombing at the box office apparently. Cost 200million to make and it looks like they may not even recoup that, let alone make a profit.

I was potentially going to watch it with my seven year old but she's probably a bit too young / sensitive for it. Shame as I thought the reboot Jumanji film was good but that's definitely too old for her, was hoping this would be a good alternative!

AnotherMarvellousThing · 02/08/2021 09:47

Isn’t part of the problem that it was simultaneously released via streaming on Disney +, thereby cutting into the cinema takings? Scarlett Johanssen is suing for the same issue because her Black Widow salary is a percentage of box office…

Cismyfatarse · 02/08/2021 09:54

I found the rather stereotypical depiction of a gay man absolutely awful. No doubt Disney are patting themselves on the back for having a character (Jack Whitehall) who hasn't married because his interests are "elsewhere." But, dear God. He had too much luggage, was afraid, wore outrageous clothes, hated discomfort - albeit he did come out fighting later.

It really should be the kind of thing we should abhor. I hated his silky, foppish behaviour. OK,the film suggests accepting him (the Rock toasts "to elsewhere") but, blimey.

AnotherMarvellousThing · 02/08/2021 10:00

I agree, @Cismyfatarse. Plus I kept expecting the man he was in love with to feature somehow later in the film, otherwise why talk about him at all? He didn’t need a Stereotyped Tragic Gay Backstory to explain his presence — he was essentially playing a combination of John Hannah’s character in The Mummy and Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones, the silly/unworldly sidekick.

But I did also expect the magic cure-all petal to feature at the end of the film — Emily Blunt’s character wanted to cure world illness enough to trek up the Amazon to find it, but the happy ending just has her and the Rock driving around London trading puns….?

Yes much easier to pirate films when they're released in perfect HD on a streaming platform, it really isn't the smartest of plans, especially as cinemas are open/starting to open around the world.
NeedNewKnees · 02/08/2021 19:43

I thought it was rollicking good fun. Plus she did get a petal. And quite frankly I would probably trade an uncaring sexist world for happy times with The Rock.

I didn’t mind Jack Whitehall being gay, it was more a stereotype of pampered upper class elitist public school boys and their very punchable faces. But that could be just me. I can’t see him without the urge to give him a slap. He looks like Young Conservatives made flesh.

Themeparklover · 03/08/2021 05:39

update from my comment it was not over hyped loved it would highly recommend , it is a cross between the mummy and pirates , 12+ at least

Eminybob · 03/08/2021 06:14

I didn’t get that he was gay until he actually said it, I just got Jack Whitehall playing Jack Whitehall!

BlithePilgrim · 03/08/2021 14:49

Plus she did get a petal

Yes, but given that she's entirely upfront throughout about the fact that she wants a petal to help science cure all the ills of the world in the middle of WWI, no less! the ending seemed a bit misjudged in just using McGregor to thumb a nose at the learned body, rather than some indication that Lily was actually doing something with the petal, or that she was going to.

Or, given that, clearly we don't live in a world with no illness, I think I was anticipating Lily excitedly handing over the petal to some scientists who say 'We'll take it from here, dear' and basically pull a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' ending where it's stashed and ignored in a lab forever.

OldTinHat · 03/08/2021 14:59

Watching it this evening!

LysistrataVickers · 03/08/2021 15:09

I enjoyed it as did 7 year old DS. It is quite long at over 2 hours but worth it in my opinion.

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/08/2021 15:49

We watched it, it was ok. Not up their with the best. My dd9 got bored half way through.

OldTinHat · 03/08/2021 21:35

Just back from seeing it. Not read other threads but it's basically a mash up of Pirates of the Caribbean. All the characters, scenes, everything. I shan't give any spoilers but although I enjoyed it I was also disappointed - especially as I'm a massive Pirates fan. It was like the day Marathons became Snickers, same thing, different wrapper!

OldTinHat · 03/08/2021 21:37

Duh, not threads, PPs!
