Help! Need a good "blockbuster" style film

Graphista · 11/06/2021 20:30

I am an awkward sod at the best of times.

Having a rough week for various reasons.

Need good - what used to be called - a blockbuster, a proper well funded, well made, fun but not necessarily comedy films to watch of a weekend.

I keep going back to old favourites and frankly I'm bloody boring myself now!

I don't like comedy much, I definitely don't like gross out or slapstick or juvenile crap

I don't want anything depressing or even cathartic

Something maybe a good meaty action/thriller, or a feel good, something to lift my spirits? Put me in a weekend/summer mood?

Really hard to explain but I scroll through lists on Netflix, prime, Disney and nothing I haven't seen already really fits the bill

As I said - annoying myself at this point!

Can you help?

Any of the fast and furious films, inside man, panic room, what lies beneath, any of the Liam Neeson action films, the woman in the window, Bourne films, Oceans 11 etc

Greenland

Bryonyshcmyony · 11/06/2021 21:32

Deadpool

Throughabushbackwards · 11/06/2021 21:34

It's a bit hard without knowing what you've seen!

Do you like Wes Anderson films? Darjeeling Limited, Grand Budapest Hotel etc.

I liked Chloe Zhao's The Rider. Haven't seen Nomadland yet.

I love Joe Wright's Anna Karenina (but many don't!).

There's a strange and beautiful film called The Fall, starring Lee Pace.

Queenoftheashes · 11/06/2021 21:35

Independence Day

We watched Face/Off again last weekend with teen ds. Was a still a good schlock high-concept blockbuster even when you know what's going to happen.

We're going to watch Con Air this weekend for similar reasons.

Justkeepleft · 11/06/2021 21:40

The hitman's bodyguard is my go to movie when I feel like that.

DrWankincense · 11/06/2021 21:41

Knives Out
The Guard

Lolololololol · 11/06/2021 21:42

Anything with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in. San Andreas, Sky Scraper, Rampage....

DrWankincense · 11/06/2021 21:42

The second not a blockbuster but cried laughing watching it.

SecondCityShark · 11/06/2021 21:43

Pan's Labyrinth. Oldie but a goodie.

Bumzoo · 11/06/2021 21:45

Tom cruise is usually worth a watch.

HamSandwichKiller · 11/06/2021 21:48

Air Force One/The Fugitive.
Re-watched both recently and both good fun.

Anything with Denzel Washington in. Unstoppable is pretty good if you have Disney +

Same for Jodie Foster. Flightplan, Panic Room or Inside Man

Graphista · 11/06/2021 21:50

Any of the fast and furious films

You know I've resisted so far but they must have something to them to have spawned so many sequels may give em a go

Woman in the window I've been debating

The rest I have seen and liked

Greenland I must admit I like the trailer

Deadpool I LOVE one of my favourites also hitmans bodyguard loved it at cinema. Love Ryan Reynolds and Samuel l Jackson. What I WISH I could watch is long kiss goodnight!

@Throughabushbackwards yea I know but there isn't time to list all the ones I've seen! I'm 48! And an avid movie fan

That said none of the ones you mentioned are the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'm looking for mainstream, easy to follow not too deep for now

The guard - is that the 2011 one?

I'm a big Tom cruise fan but I've seen em all multiple times and I'm
Wanting something new (to me)

There's lots of well known films I missed first time around for whatever reason so it doesn't have to be new/recently released ones

Obscure but in the right area atmosphere wise is good too eg I watched The old guard on someone's recommendation and wasn't at all sure when I read the premise but I loved it

Twister is a good one. Has action, a good story and a feel good if slightly cheesy in a good old 90s way! And no violence which is nice.

APurpleSquirrel · 11/06/2021 22:10

Jurassic Park/World
Pretty much any Marvel film
Die Hard - though technically a Christmas movie! Grin

Graphista · 11/06/2021 22:19

Working my way through marvel in order of release. I've seen some and not others and trying to catch up

@Graphista

Can I recommend 'Heat'

If I had to name a favourite film ever, it's mine. It's on NOW tv/Sky or rentable.

Al Pacino and Robert de Niro

I watched it at the cinema in late 80s and said to my DH at the time.... and I whisperd to him in the cinema, please don't let this film end (it's long too!)

It is just gripping and even though I watched it again yesterday and wanted to faff on laptop at the same time, I was gripped, and never looked away. Yet again!

Roussette · 18/06/2021 20:28

Oh... and the cinematography and music was gobsmacking. And you don't notice it's an older film.

MaloInAnAppleTree · 18/06/2021 20:30

Skyscraper is a cracker.
You can’t go wrong with the Mission Impossible films.
You can never watch Hot Fuzz or The Blues Brothers or Aliens too many times.
