Because it's Valentine's Day and I'm happily single, I've got a date with the DVD player and Picnic at Hanging Rock!
Love it. Love the soundtrack. Anyone else?

Yes it’s beautifully shot, the cast all look very ethereal, and the music is atmospheric
Good choice

BaconAndAvocado · 15/02/2021 11:03

I love this film!

Utterly beautiful cinematography, costumes and music.

rc22 · 15/02/2021 17:59

I love it too. Haven't seen it in quite some time though.

BaconAndAvocado · 15/02/2021 20:16

No, me neither. Not sure if DH would get on with it. No car chases.

Balaur · 15/02/2021 20:19

I haven't seen this for years but weirdly I still think about it quite regularly Shock it's just such an atmospheric film, it has an almost liminal quality to it.

BaconAndAvocado · 15/02/2021 20:28

I can remember having it in VHS video and watching it a lot when I was around 15/16.
It made a big impression on me.

There was a bbc adaptation a few years back but I haven’t watched it.

Amazing film. Thanks to you for this reminder

musicalfrog · 17/02/2021 07:13

Yes good film. Was quite gutted when I found out that it isn't based on a true story .

HappydaysArehere · 17/02/2021 19:08

This is one film I avoid. Miserable and odd.

Froglette16 · 17/02/2021 19:15

I’m from Downunder. A family friend visited Hanging Rock ( it’s a real place) and said that certain things became very strange when he was driving towards the place itself. He thought he was driving uphill but the gears told him he was driving down and vice versa. Does anyone else have a story from the real Hanging Rock!?

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 17/02/2021 19:21

@Jaypreen

I was too! I only found out about a year ago!

Good to hear of real spooky goings on though with the car! I'm happier now!

Love it. Actually it’s mine and DH’s special film from when we got together. We met at university and studied it in our module on ‘Australian art and literature’.
We both wrote an essay on it and, of course, had to go and watch it an extra three times in the cosy video booth with our headphones on. Romantic, disturbing, but romantic for us!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/02/2021 19:23

Oooh excellent film OP. Enjoy it!

peak2021 · 17/02/2021 20:08

One of the films when I had a BFI subscription for the first few months of the pandemic. Watched out of curiosity, and indeed an excellent film.

Pootle40 · 17/02/2021 20:13

For years and years I thought this was based on a true story.

It's fiction.

Percivalthebabyspider · 17/02/2021 20:40

Yes it’s fiction, but Hanging Rock is itself a real place and very beautiful. I’ve been bushwalking there numerous times and it is lovely and peaceful. The kids had a ball scrambling over the rocks. The rock formations really are as awe inspiring as the movie shows.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 17/02/2021 23:55

Could you hear the panpipes while you were there?! Shock

VelveteenChair · 18/02/2021 00:02

What do you think happened to the girls at the end? *

  • No spoiler alert because this film at least 40 years old.

Also, I’ve googled the film and I thought the Wikipedia page had been amended by a recent prankster (who didn’t have the authority) as the cast now includes Jackie Weaver.

But then I checked it out on IMDB and it’s true, Jacki Weaver is in the film. Weird.

converseandjeans · 18/02/2021 00:07

I remember watching this in my first year at secondary school 1983 & found it really scary at the time. I always assumed it was based on a real story so was disappointed to read recently that it was a fiction book.

Blacktothepink · 18/02/2021 00:11

It’s a great film.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 18/02/2021 00:24

I watched this a year or so ago. At least I thought I did. It was ok. Good storyline but nothing special as far as I remember. Couldn't work out why you are all enthusing about it. It seems I've seen the new version (with ummm... whatsit in, her that was in the tudors)
Maybe I need to watch the original!

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 18/02/2021 01:16

Yeah, we're talking about the original 1975 film. The cinematography and the soundtrack makes it quite unique. It has an eery, ethereal atmosphere. Try it!
