Pinocchio - A warning

So today I took dd to the cinema to watch this (new version).

Well I was rather shocked, it included:

Pinocchio burning his legs off
Being hung by a noose
Turning into a donkey, having a brick tied round his leg and flung out to sea.

A young boy in front of us cried, lots of people left (including us). I am aware Disney has a dark side, but I felt this was a step too far.
Rated PG
Has anyone else seen it?

The 1940 Disney film? Or a different version?

RedStreetMonument · 18/08/2020 20:28

Is it Disney? I thought it was Italian.

TitianaTitsling · 18/08/2020 20:28

I was traumatised enough by the early cartoon version! This will be swerved Indeed!

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/08/2020 20:29

I think that’s in the original story too. It’s not much different from say Red Riding Hoods grandmother being eaten by a wolf or many other children’s tales.

AnaadiNitya · 18/08/2020 20:30

I’ve just watched some clips. My kids would have not enjoyed that at all...

Namechange8471 · 18/08/2020 20:31

loutypips it’s a new version, just released in cinemas, below is a review.

Just thought I’d give a bit of a warning, we’ve seen a lot of Disney remakes and originals but this was a little too much for dd.

I am 99% sure that the film you saw has nothing to do with Disney. It's an Italian film (originally released in 2019) that is now being released internationally.

It's an adaptation of a fairy tale. Fairy tales are deliberately frightening in order to expose children to peril in a 'safe' way.

Disney has a long history of sanitising classic stories.

Pipandmum · 18/08/2020 20:36

It's not by Disney and is based on the original story. Many fairy tales are pretty grim - Hansel and Gretel anyone?

MrsSpookyM · 18/08/2020 20:37

Did you see the one that came out last year? That wasn't Disney.

Tbh though I've always though Disney films are brutal, the original scared the shit out of me as a child. Ditto Dumbo, Bambi etc.

Bear6 · 18/08/2020 20:43

Is it not in English? Surly it will be difficult for children to read the subtitles!

Namechange8471 · 18/08/2020 20:49

applesauce1

Yes that’s the one!
Ah my apologies I thought it was Disney, it was in English.
Maybe I should watch more fairy tales to toughen up 😂

The Disney version of Pinocchio scared the bejesus out of me as a kid!

Purpleartichoke · 18/08/2020 20:51

The 1940s Disney version is also horrifying.

loutypips · 18/08/2020 20:55

Disney are planning a remake - it's not been made yet though!

www.thevintagenews.com/2019/03/31/disneys-pinocchio/

It is a disturbing tale- like most fairytales really. Disney sanitised most of them and removed things like chopping toes off and birds pecking out eyes.

LittleRa · 18/08/2020 20:55

There is a Disney (live action remake of the original Disney cartoon) currently being made, not due for release until 2021. The one currently in cinemas is not Disney. How old is your DD? Mine is 6yo and I do find PGs are mostly too scary/complicated for her.

MrsSpookyM · 18/08/2020 21:06

My friend has just shown her 4 year old The Hobbit, but won't let her watch Disney yet.

Disney films are all terrifying!

Namechange8471 · 18/08/2020 21:49

LittleRa She’s 11! She also has autism so it’s a little tricky picking movies sometimes.

I almost ran screaming from the pyjama section in Primark as it was full of Pinocchio emblazoned sleepwear. I'm still not over watching it thirty years ago, it's a horrible story.

LittleRa · 18/08/2020 23:59

@Namechange8471 Ah, it’s tricky isn’t it, and you can’t vet every full movie beforehand so it can be a minefield. Mine saw Onward the other day and loved it (it does deal with death of a parent and also some scary-ish bits), could be one to try if it’s playing near you.

acatcalledjohn · 19/08/2020 00:35

You do know that in the Grimm brothers' version of Cinderella one sister cuts off her heel to fit the slipper, and the other sister cuts off her toes. They then get blinded by doves when Cinderella finally marries her prince.

There is also one where the bad character is made to dance on hot coals or in hot slippers until she drops dead. Possibly the queen in Snow White?

Disney sanitised the stories significantly.

Namechange8471 · 19/08/2020 09:58

acatcalledjohn

I did not know that! 😲

OP posts:
JorisBonson · 19/08/2020 10:09

@acatcalledjohn

Don't forget The Little Mermaid when the mermaid gets feet but it's like she's walking on swords, but the prince doesn't give a shit and makes her dance until her feet are bleeding.

Then he fucks her off at the end and she turns into sea foam.

giletrouge · 19/08/2020 10:18

Fairy tales were an instrument of repression, designed to scare children into obedience in times when the hierarchy was the principle of human organisation.
Disney basically fucked them right up. Pinocchio was about the REALLY TERRIBLE things that happen to a person who dares to lie to their elders and betters. No-one in the past cared if kids were terrified, it's really only recently that anyone gave a shit about things like that. Sounds like this film version is not designed for modern kid consumption AT ALL.

Collaborate · 19/08/2020 10:42

This is why we have the ratings. It's PG so that parents can read up about the film and form a view about whether it's suitable for their children.

I've just posted in Chat about this....
