Pinocchio - A warning

So today I took dd to the cinema to watch this (new version).

Well I was rather shocked, it included:

Pinocchio burning his legs off
Being hung by a noose
Turning into a donkey, having a brick tied round his leg and flung out to sea.

A young boy in front of us cried, lots of people left (including us). I am aware Disney has a dark side, but I felt this was a step too far.
Rated PG
Has anyone else seen it?

Elderflower14

Did you see it?
I found parts such as the hanging awful!

Ds2 who's 24 with learning disabilities wanted to see it so I had to... The hanging and the donkey drowning were horrific!!!

The stories collected by the Grimms' were not intended for children. Neither were the stories of HCA.

Disney has a lot to answer for.

Namechange8471 · 19/08/2020 16:49

Prokupatuscrakedatus Sorry but what’s HCA?

I would guess Hans Christian Anderson...

TW2013 · 19/08/2020 17:02

PGs are a broad spectrum of films. Dead Poets Society is a PG, you wouldn't watch that and Frozen in the same setting!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/08/2020 17:08

Name
Sorry - Hans Christian Andersen

Elderflower14 · 19/08/2020 17:20

It's like The Woman in Black.. How in the name of all that's holy is that a 12...i had nightmares after watching that!

oldwhyno · 19/08/2020 17:34

Watch the trailer, it's not exactly hiding that it's a dark and scary type family movie.

GertiMJN · 19/08/2020 17:40

Why are some people irrirated by the OP posting a helpful warning.

How are parents supposed to get their information to make a judgement on PG films, unless people do this?

daisychain1620 · 19/08/2020 17:50

Traditional fairy tales are definitely very dark, Hansel and Gretel is one that stayed with me - abandoned kids, cannibalism, live burnings! Still love them though!

rvby · 19/08/2020 17:55

The original Pinocchio story is deeply disturbing and violent, the 1940s Disney adaptation was fairly vile, not sure why anyone would expect a live action modern version to be child friendly tbh!

Fwiw, Common Sense Media is a good resource for pre vetting films. They're a bit puritanical but you can wade through that and work out pretty accurately in advance whether a film will be upsetting.

BarefootHippieChick · 19/08/2020 18:06

Elderflower dd watched The Woman in Black in English class as part of their GCSE curriculum. Apparently scared the shit out of a good proportion of them 😁

Namechange8471 · 19/08/2020 18:20

GertiMJN

Thank you!

My intention was to let others know just in case they planned to see it, and their children may be more sensitive (like mine).

Wasn't sleeping beauty raped in her sleep to be woken by being in labour with twins?

The little mermaid killed herself.

They are all horrible. That was the point. As warnings.

Elderflower14 · 19/08/2020 18:52

@BarefootHippieChick I've told this story before on here... I made my best friend come and watch TWIB with me in the Village Hall and I screamed the whole way through... I then made her walk me home... No street lights in our road... Just as I went to slide the bolt on my front gate my then bf cycled up behind us no bike lights and said "GOOD EVENING LADIES!!" We nearly crapped ourselves and I don't think bf knew I knew so many swear words... He was full of apologies when we explained!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Mochudhu · 19/08/2020 18:57

I've just done a short course on Futurelearn about fairy tales. In the original story of Beauty and the Beast, Belle has 2 sisters who are turned into stone gateposts at the Beast/Prince's Palace and forced to watch her happiness for eternity.

www.futurelearn.com/courses/fairy-tales if anyone's interested.

PenguinBarnotBird · 19/08/2020 19:05

Thank you for the warning!! Was just about to book it today but DCs are way too sensitive for this & I don’t have the patience for the nightmares that will no doubt follow

BarefootHippieChick · 19/08/2020 20:28

elderflower that's hilarious!! Dd wanted to watch the movie again with me, I did find some of it freaky but I'd also read the book so knew the story.

Elderflower14 · 19/08/2020 20:32

@BarefootHippieChick I almost hyperventilate when I see one of these in action!! 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯

It's not a Disney film - the Disney version isn't due out for a year or so

Pretty sure in the story though he does get his legs burnt off

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 20/08/2020 08:24

I liked Pinocchio as a child and will go and see this original version but I will not take my Dc to go see it. My youngest would hate it.
