Has anyone seen it yet? Will it cheer me up as much as it promises? I understand it's not true to the book but is it worth seeing?

I loved it! More than Little Women (I dozed off in the first bit of Little Women and then took ages to work out that the time frames kept shifting! Blush). Only went to see it as a last minute thing and Dev Patel is an absolute dream. Very strong supporting cast. Thought Tilda Swinton (whom I always find a bit scary and gold) was a delight in her role and Hugh Laurie was brilliant too. A definite watch!

Oh thank you twoboys,, I'm so pleased to hear that and am looking forward to seeing if this week. Glad you enjoyed it.

I loved it. Thought the cast were all brilliant and found the film uplifting.

NotSorry · 27/01/2020 06:41

I’ve never read the book and had a feeling that it was racing through the story, trying to pack it all in. It was good in a weird way

EnidBlyton · 27/01/2020 12:52

Fantastic, just about to go and see

Arthritica · 27/01/2020 20:02

Just come out of the cinema.

What an utter joy! The cast are absolutely marvellous, it’s beautifully shot, the theatrical bits are brilliant and I couldn’t be smiling any more broadly.

The perfect antidote to a difficult week. Just lovely.

BeardedMum · 27/01/2020 20:04

Is it sad in any parts? Can only cope with uplifting films at the moment and remember there being sad part reading the book 😰

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 27/01/2020 20:11

Loved it, and my 10 yo DS gave it 9/10

NotSorry · 28/01/2020 09:52

@BeardedMum I've DM'd you so as not give any spoilers

JulietJanuary · 28/01/2020 09:55

I want to see this, glad to see positive reviews.

underthewestway · 28/01/2020 09:56

I know this is a ridiculous question but is there lots of violence towards children? There is obvs lots of beating/caning in the book and I cannot bear watching anything of that nature on screen if it’s too ‘real’.

NotSorry · 28/01/2020 10:32

@underthewestway

no not particularly - some of it is implied - I am the same, violence towards children upsets me

PerkingFaintly · 28/01/2020 10:44

Oh I'm so pleased to hear good reviews! Really looking forward to this when it hits the telly/DVD.

The casting sounded inspired all round – Dev Patel, oh yes! The part he was born to play! I'd have been gutted if they'd made a pigs ear of a book I like and a cast with such potential.

Nobody tell me about Little Em'ly.

underthewestway · 28/01/2020 10:51

Thanks @NotSorry - good to know. I am rubbish with violence of any kind unless heavily stylised, but towards children makes me feel physically sick. I am a barrel of laughs when it comes to thrillers or action movies!

Excited about this now....

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 28/01/2020 12:09

There is one scene where you hear a child being beaten and he is quite terrified (obv). It's not nice.

gingergiraffe · 28/01/2020 16:24

I enjoyed it. Very fast paced and full of fun. Yes, Dev among others in the cast was brilliant. Don’t expect it to be true to the original story or like any of the previous films. Please don’t flame for this but the parentage of some was a bit unbelievable as in they were completely different.

PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 16:27

Absolutely loved it. Hugh Laurie was a hoot! Dev Patel is just yum

gingergiraffe totally agree about the parentage of some characters.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/01/2020 16:32

giraffe

Please don’t flame for this but the parentage of some was a bit unbelievable as in they were completely different.

This was intentional - I've heard Armando Iannucci interviewed about this. He literally ignored skin colour, race, ethnicity and just cast the characters, so that yes, you get characters that seem biologically unconnected to their families. But intended as such.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/01/2020 16:35

I really loved it. It was quite different to the book, don't want to say too much in case of spoiling it - that being said, I think somehow it captured the spirit and humour of Dickens, which isn't always as clear as I think he might have intended in his books.

Tilda Swinton and Hugh Laurie were just brilliant. Peter Capaldi too, and loved our own (as in Irish) Bronagh Gallagher as the Micawbers. I think it did help that I'd forgotten a lot of the book actually!

Even tho the violence to children is implied and not as overt in any way as in the book (I hated the parts about David Copperfield's early years in the book), I still found those parts very sad. But the least thing will get me!

It's beautifully done, really amazing, overall.

JunkshopLil · 28/01/2020 16:38

Ooh my son is taking me to see this on Thursday evening. Glad to hear you are giving it such rave reviews. Really looking forward to it now!

AnnDaloozier · 28/01/2020 16:39

I hated it. Boring. Panto style. No one laughed in out cinema

AnnDaloozier · 28/01/2020 16:40

Woman next to us said “ the trailer made it look funny!”
It’s not like death of Stalin

Ikeasucks · 29/01/2020 00:31

Much better than Little Women (which i enjoyed) and very funny. Loved it actually.

puptent · 29/01/2020 15:02

I also loved it. In fact, it was one of the few films I've seen recently where the trailer didn't have all the best jokes. I was really surprised and pleased to see Daisy May Cooper as Peggotty. I don't think she even appeared in the trailer and she is easily the best thing. She should have been in every scene! In fact, the women were the best characters by far. Tilda Swinton is glorious and the actress who played Dora (who looks just like Stacey off of Gavin and) was hilarious. Too funny. Paul Whitehouse's Norfolk accent was spot on - not the usual generic local-yokel. Fab. There were, however, some students RAGING afterwards about how different it was to the book. I mean, I've never read the book so it was good with me.

Tummelthecat · 29/01/2020 15:09

Saw it last night. Brilliant film, so good for a dreich January night. We loved it, hope you enjoy!
