Has anyone seen it yet? Will it cheer me up as much as it promises? I understand it's not true to the book but is it worth seeing?

I loved it too. People did laugh out loud, myself included.
But it's just a beautiful film and done in quite an unusual way. Agree it captured the spirit of Dicken's writing and it has actually made me want to read the book which is remarkable as I usually dodge the classics!

Loathe Dickens - have read yards of his work but still loathe it. But this was genius and full of joy - a fab film.

Loving everyone’s (nearly everyone’s) glowing comments. Such a jewel of a movie

I wasn't impressed at all. It changed so many of the events and the order in the original book and didn't capture the essence at all. Dev Patel was charming though.

I didn't enjoy it. It should have been called 'David Copperfield - the pantomime'
Having said that, I thought Hugh Laurie was excellent. And the erasure of Dora was done cleverly.
But, for a start, DC left the blacking factory, and walked to the Kent coast, when he was a boy. According to the film, he spent his life from 5ish to 20s (which is how old the actor looked) working in there. AND comes out well enough educated to know about the execution of Charles I, and with a middle class accent.
The whole thing was cartoonish.
And I really hate colour blind casting. Like - here's Steerforth. And who's the woman getting out of the carriage. Oh, his mother. What! Ditto with the Wickfield's. Totally jarring. I get it that the director, in his wisdom, feels that this is all necessary, and that it is my responsibility to stop noticing it. And I'll accept it the day they remake Zulu with white zulu warriors. But it doesn't seem to work that way.
And Dev Patel is the blandest, most boring actor ever.

EnidBlyton · 30/01/2020 20:47

unfortunately the showing, afternoon, was very quiet, it probably would have been funnier if more people had been around us, laughing.

I was wondering if I were the only person who doesn't see the attraction. I find him really annoying. He has one gormless, :oh doesn't everyone love me look"

TheTigersBride · 31/01/2020 01:34

No idea what the "o" in "oh" is a smiley face

PerkingFaintly · 31/01/2020 10:42

I always think "Me! Whom everyone loves!" from War & Peace when I see Patel. Grin

That's exactly why I thought he'd be perfect for DC!

This is good to read. I’m taking my mum to see it on Saturday- it’s her choice, but sounds like I’ll like it too.

I thought it was well cast, all the performances were delightful really. And it is beautifully shot. But it was just dull, and about 30 mins too long for my liking.

funmummy48 · 16/02/2020 06:14

I loved it!

Dowser · 25/02/2020 21:59

I enjoyed it more than Emma and little women and Yes I found the casting odd.
