Anyone seen it? It had a limited cinema release (probably so it could qualify for the Oscars) but it is now available on Netflix

I really wanted to like it, but I was just meh about the whole thing - the only bit I liked was right at the end. It was all a bit too try hard for me.

Mmmmm I'm kind of with you on this. I liked it but didn't love it - although possibly on a big screen it would have had a different effect.

I thought the acting was fantastic, especially Laura Dern and Scarlett Johansson. But the story itself felt a bit predictable.

JustALittleHistory · 15/01/2020 18:29

Made my fucking head hurt, gave up after an hour of exasperation. Film about poor man boohoo, oh poor him. Yawn. It could have been such a good story if any woman in it was allowed an actual opinion on anything.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/01/2020 00:04

I loved it, absolutely loved it and could watch it again easily.

TheVanguardSix · 18/01/2020 00:09

I fell asleep. I wanted to love it. Everything about it was quality, for sure. But, I don't know. I'm too cynical. I had my own dramatic divorce 15 years ago. I suppose films about divorce just don't interest me.

OnceUponACat · 18/01/2020 00:21

I absolutely disliked it. All of it except for the beginning when they read the letters to each
Other.
It was so skewed towards him, there was no depth, Laura Dern was a caricature of a lawyer etc. Plus it was sooo unrealistic. In real life that kind of divorce would be hell.

I lived through one and I instigated one. If you want an amicable one that is not the way to go.

And I soo wanted to like it.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 18/01/2020 00:23

I found it really thespy. Long, choreographed soliloquies etc. not naturalistic at all.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/01/2020 00:25

Very stagey. And SJ seems to be morphing into Annette Bening, which I found distracting.

NC4Now · 18/01/2020 00:25

I considered watching this tonight. Glad I didn’t now.

Copperleaves · 18/01/2020 00:26

I didn't think it was skewed towards him, I think he seemed arrogant and totally caught up in his own career - he became a bit more humble at the end and seemed to accept his (ex) wife had the right to a life that she enjoyed too.
The lawyers were awful in how they behaved

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 18/01/2020 00:27

PinkArsed, I thought Hilary Clinton Grin

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 18/01/2020 00:29

Also, I found it hard to sympathise with their break up. I went through a hellish break up about a year ago, so that's my benchmark. And these characters were just fine around each other, as though they'd never meant anything to each other. And aside from him cheating, I found the rationale for their divorce a bit weak.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/01/2020 14:15

He didn't listen to anything she said,he was so caught up in his own life.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 18/01/2020 15:04

MrsPelligrino I think my ex's behaviour was so off-the-charts fucked up, that their relationship looked fairly pleasant to me. But I realise that I probably need quite a bit of therapy so appreciate my opinion is an the extreme end of the scale!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/01/2020 00:26

I think that we are so used to seeing hideous divorces that is was refreshing to see one that was relatively ok ( even though it looked horrendous to me) it stands to reason there are divorces at the other end of the scale too.

The part where he reads the letter with his little boy ,oh goodness, I bawled my eyes out.

AnyFucker · 19/01/2020 00:31

Boring as fuck

NotSorry · 19/01/2020 08:23

@anyfucker

I really liked it but can understand why others didnt. ADORED the song scene near the end - it could have been total cringe but it worked, and was beautifully performed.

MrsGrindah · 19/01/2020 08:34

It was dire. Both characters deeply unappealing and self absorbed. And no storyline whatsoever. Arty farty up itself nonsense.

Copperleaves · 19/01/2020 13:06

I think they became better people toward the end - they were better divorced than married - so warm to them more then. But of course you don't have to like characters for a film to be interesting

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/01/2020 14:50

I agree Copperleaves the last 5 mins was key to the whole story .

DickDewy · 19/01/2020 14:53

I really loved it. Apart from both singing bits which were awful.

Bickles · 19/01/2020 14:55

Watched it on Friday night. It was ok but I wouldn’t recommend it.

EachandEveryone · 21/01/2020 19:13

Im about 3/4 through it and its just a bad Woody Allen rip off isnt it? Not his classics I mean the later ones that werent that good well, this is just copying his style.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 22/01/2020 23:00

That crossed my mind too each

EachandEveryone · 23/01/2020 11:50

Which would've been quite easy as at least three of them have been in Woody Allen films. Also Laura Dern nominated for the Oscar? As much as I love her shes just playing exactly the same character that she played in Big Little Lies. I dunno the film felt too try hard for me and I didnt like any of them.
