Anyone seen yet and happy to share spoilers? Can’t go til the weekend!

OP posts:
ChristmasSweet · 22/12/2019 19:06

I can't go and watch it because of palpatine. It's so ridiculous, I dunno why anyone approved that. Knew they were going to do that though thanks to the trailers so wasn't surprised. Shite end to what used to be good films. God knows what the hell they are going to do next, is vader still alive? Hmm

Dozer · 22/12/2019 19:27

No! But Haydon Christiansen’s voice is in it, which is unlikely to get you rushing to see it either Grin

Agree, the palpatine thing is ridiculous. The Force Awakens was just a rehashed New Hope. It’s like they couldn’t think up a bad enough baddie, or make Kylo Ren the main baddie. So just dredged up the old one.

SproutMuncher · 22/12/2019 19:34

I agree with brainfart, the first half was not really my thing but I found the ending exhilarating (if a little predictable!)

So much plot on finding the way finder only for it to just get broken by Kylo Ren, waste of time

ChristmasSweet · 22/12/2019 19:56

Think I actually preferred the prequels to these Dozer Grin that's just how bad these films have been. But yeah still not going to see it. I bet for the next trilogy they are making vader comes back to life. Or maybe yoda but a bad yoda. Grin

RozTheSchnoz · 22/12/2019 20:09

Thanks all. I passed on your advice to DH who insisted they would enjoy it... we went to see it and I had to take both children out because they found to too scary 🤦‍♀️ DH's words were 'I should've gone to see it first myself' (ahem, see my original post on this thread 🤦‍♀️)

FlaviaAlbia · 22/12/2019 20:22

Oh no Roz, how annoying!

Which bit was it they found too scary? DH was planning to take DS who's 6 though with some strategic hand over the eyes at bits. He loves the other films but this one is a bit creepier.

RozTheSchnoz · 22/12/2019 20:42

Sadly I think it was all just a bit big and noisy and generally overwhelming for them. The 6 year old lasted about an hour then claimed he wanted to go home because he hated all the refs to the Sith. The 4 year old came out about half an hour later. It's not exactly the cheeriest of films but then none of them are. There's a point where it looks like one of the more popular characters has died and they found that a bit upsetting. DH is frustrated because they've seen all
8 plus Rogue One, without any upset at all, so he didn't think he was doing the wrong thing today, but there's clearly a big difference between watching it booming out from such a massive screen and watching it in the comfort of your own home. Oh well, lesson learned!

FlaviaAlbia · 22/12/2019 21:33

Oh I see. Yes, it was really noisy and explosive in the first half, I could see that. Thanks! Hopefully they'll enjoy it when it comes out on dvd and your can skip bits.

Fast forward was the only thing that made 8 bearable for me after the first viewing!

Lweji · 22/12/2019 21:39

Yes, if your young children aren't used to watching such films on screen, don't go with them for your first viewing. It is indeed a different ball game to tv at home.

ShiningTor · 24/12/2019 17:55

We loved it and there was applause at the end of the film in our cinema.

Ohdeariedear · 24/12/2019 18:06

I loved it. I loved all the little nods to things from over the years - Chewie getting his medal, the Ewoks, Lando ... but my best most favourite was the blink and miss it appearance of Denis Lawson aka Wedge flying one of the ships at the end. I may have actually clapped with glee at that (I did).

grannyjacob · 24/12/2019 19:36

Saw it last night and was overall, sadly disappointed. I'd been looking forward to it so much.Too much action/CGI, not enough humanity (in the broadest sense) for me. Saw A New Hope back in '77 and seen every film since. I think my main problem is that the original cast who played Leia, Luke, Han, Darth, Ben, Yoda, etc. were such strong personalities, they were the focal point of each film and that hasn't happened since. I enjoyed seeing old faces, e.g.Denis Lawson, Ewoks, etc. pop in/ out. Was lovely and very moving seeing Leia again, great that Chewie finally got his medal, lots of little bits like that made me happy. Was wonderful to NOT see Jar Jar Binks. And Palpatine reappearing didn't bother me, I've never been one to nit-pick plot holes (whacking great crater in this case 😂)But there was no buzz in the cinema at the end, people just left, weren't talking about it. Even yet, after all these years, I can watch any of the first three films and still get excited. Least said about the middle three the better. Don't care if I never see any of the last three again.

MabelMoo23 · 30/12/2019 09:12

Saw it yesterday, I loved loved loved it.

I started crying when Leia died - all I could think about what has Billie Lourdes must have felt seeing her mother "dying again" on screen. But then after Leia died, I pretty much cried throughout remainder of film.

I desperately wanted Rey and Kylo to end up together so yes I cried when he died. I thought maybe he might kill Palpatine for Rey so she didn't get his spirit.

I was also shocked at the 'I am the spy" bit as well!!!!!

Thought Richard E Grant was superb

Campervan69 · 30/12/2019 09:29

I loved it as somebody who went to the cinema to see the first ever Star Wars film at age 7 in 1977 and has followed the story of since it felt like a trip down memory lane for me. I too cried when Leia died. Took my mum who is 77 and my sons 17, 14 and 8 and they loved it as well.

scarecrowhead · 30/12/2019 09:43

I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the others. Leia's scenes didn't seem right (for obvious reasons) and the new Chewie doesn't move like Peter Mayhew.

Ohdeariedear · 30/12/2019 17:15

@scarecrowhead oh I noticed that about Chewie too! Just not the same.

mizu · 30/12/2019 21:31

Like campervan69 i loved it as someone who saw the second Star Wars film with my dad at the age of 6 or 7 at the cinema and have loved it every since. I really enjoyed it and think my DH and DDs did too. Really wanted Rey and Kylo to end up together too but he had done so much bad stuff surely it wouldn't have been possible.
Love Maz too, was so glad to see her in it again - and of course, Han Star

Figgygal · 30/12/2019 23:12

I was glad that Ben had his redemptive Arc you knew there was no way he could survive however after years of tyranny and oppression and murder of countless thousands they couldn’t just whitewash that and say oh he’s good now

I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Adam driver and I thought that in sequences when he was Ben he was very attractive something had changed in his hair I think his face was just softer . Need to watch marriage story on Netflix I hear he is amazing in that

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 31/12/2019 08:32

Argh Ben Solo wielding a Jedi saber, YES. He has such a great face.

Gulsink · 31/12/2019 19:07

Saw it with my 5 year old today. He was fine with it.
I thought Rey was awesome. Kylo Ren was good too. Didn't want them to kiss though, I don't think it was needed.
I thought Zorii Bliss (helmeted lady from Poe's past) was going to have a bigger part. I was surprised how little she was in it for a character whose appearance seemed to stand out so much from the rest.

KatherineJaneway · 02/01/2020 07:31

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laughed and cried.

I liked Rey saying Skywalker at the end. It was like, this is my life, I choose who I am going to be and I am a Skywalker.

TabbyM · 06/01/2020 11:07

I enjoyed it apart from the deadings :)

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/01/2020 14:07

Did anyone else have a little dignified weep at the montage of kids fans/pets dressed up that they played at the start? I felt a little overcome that this was going to be The End Sad

I also shed a tear or two when Ben saw Han (he's still got it 😜!).

And when we thought Chewy was a gonner.

My 11 year old was incredibly embarrassed by my behaviour but even her ice heart broke at the Chewy bit. DH just said "JJ wouldn't DARE!".

Ren/Ben grew on me throughout the films although I will NEVER forgive him.

Hasn't Kerri Russell got amazing eyes? I wondered if she was Sabine at first.

Definitely my favourite of these three films. Solo was also excellent.

Anyone hoping to get free Disney tv trial to watch The Mandalorian?

BubblyWater · 18/01/2020 03:07

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz I've just started watching The Mandalorian. Onto episode 2 anx im already hooked.

It's fricking awesome. Different tonally from the movies but appropriate for the non-skywalker story they're telling.

BubblyWater · 18/01/2020 03:12

We got the Disney+ annual subscription as it's actually good value of you compare to Netties.

The kids are loving the really old school Disney animated movies, which are lovely tonrewatch as an adult.
