Saw it this morning, thought it was fantastic - so sad but brutal. Phoenix is amazing as always.

I need to talk about the ending though!

Me and DH watched it the other night and both thought it was brilliant, the acting and the obvious stark look at the state of society today and mental health issues. Its also reignited my crush on Joaquin Phoenix 😁

HotCrossPun1 · 13/10/2019 10:23

You’ve all made such interesting points.

I thought it was absolutely outstanding. He deserves an Oscar for sure.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 13/10/2019 15:39

Sad how when he was himself he was invisible and then after the incidents and the clown make up he was seen by everyone. Though still think that was all in his head. Just worked out a little to easy.

Know its been written off by some due to the violence but there's are worst films out there. Least this carries a message of some sort.
Powerful performances all round. Didn't think would get sucked into it as much as did.

Joker0fGotham · 13/10/2019 23:38

I just hope my death makes more cents than my life

AthollPlace · 13/10/2019 23:51

In that early scene, she asks him if he’s thought more about why he was in the hospital and he has (what appears at the time to be) a flashback of a few seconds where he’s in a white room
When he’s talking to the social worker the clock reads 11:11. And then in the flashback the clock also reads 11:11. I did wonder if that meant he was in the white room imagining the whole thing?

Cocolapew · 16/10/2019 22:48

Just in after seeing it and loved it, JP is such an amazing actor, he was mesmerising.
I don't think it was that violent, there's worse on the tv. It's the undercurrent that is unsettling.
It the sort of film you could watch over and over and have a different view on it each time.

EachandEveryone · 17/10/2019 00:05

Yes, I did notice the Michael Jackson dancing along to the Gary Glitter tune. I thought that was abit off.

Loved it and i loved the fact that Robert de Niro was in it it had Taxi Driver written all over it. JP was his younger double. Amazing acting. I didnt over think it as I dont know know much about Marvel apart from watching Batman and Robin during the school holidays. Was he his son or not then?

BloggersBlog · 21/10/2019 20:52

I dont think he was his son as it seems as if his mum adopted him and made the whole story up and his "dad"

LondonLass61 · 01/11/2019 23:59

A heartbreaking film that gives a real sense of the loneliness of mental illness and poverty. I think that it has also encouraged one of its target demographics i.e. young men, to talk about MH issues - and when the suicide rate among males is so high, this can only be a good thing.
Phoenix deserves an Oscar for it.

secretfreckle · 03/11/2019 01:28

Just got back from this.
Amazing! I'd forgotten Robert De Niro was in it and was thinking to myself that JP had mannerisms just like him and then he turned up as Murray.
BloggersBlog Michael Jackson! The hair, the white makeup, the dancing, the suit, the creepy looks and voice on the talk show and even the standing on the car in a 'Jesus-like pose' like MJ did after one of the trials. It can't have been a coincidence.
Such a good film. JP was brilliant.

I saw it for the second time yesterday and noticed a few things I hadn’t before.

There are several numbers which are prominent, and which count down - and then in the final scene when Bruce loses his parents the film showing is an “ace in the hole”. Almost a nod to the cards the joker usually carries.

And we see him behind or through glass a lot of the time, I wonder if that’s a further indication that he’s already in the asylum and we are watching him behind a screen.

Evilmorty · 03/11/2019 01:48

I also don’t think if matters if this isn’t canon. There are plenty of one shot comics so why not a one shot film. The Killing Joke isn’t canon and even in there the joker says his past life is “multiple choice”.

I am so torn on the Thomas Wayne issue through. Penny could have faked the message on the back of the photo, but at the same time TW is still complicit in his downfall because when faced with a clearly defeated man with no clue about who he is or where he comes from, he punches him in the face despite having more info than the guy does about his own life. Why not say, look, she’s clearly not told you so come to Wayne Manor, have a cuppa and I’ll exlain all about what happened with your mum.

Wouldn’t it be awful if she was telling the truth all along and TW’s lies and betrayals lead Joker to live a lie and finally kill his own mother. That’s the real big bad.

Evilmorty · 03/11/2019 02:15

And just thinking about how they worked up the delusional parts, there are several instances which add to that but are more subtle.

  • hes hit by a car, he’s in a (convenient) car accident which hurt several others, but recovers pretty well each time
  • no one comes when his mothers machines beep
  • mentioned already, hardly anyone gives chase when he steals penny’s record
  • why would she be allowed to adopt a child alone, and then keep him after the abuse? Who even looked after him while she was in Arkham?
  • a guy in the bathroom at the theatre walks right by him as he leaves, without even looking at him, whilst he’s in his trampy clothes. Was this because it’s a delusion or emphasis on the poor being “invisible” to the rich?
  • the colours he wears mirror Bruce
  • his adoption papers state he was an abandoned child which leaves the door open for him being a “nobody”
  • he dances either just before or after he has killed someone and he didn’t dance after being in the neighbours flat so I assumed she was alive

Another thought just came to me. If TW is his father, he also set in motion the very events which caused his own son to become Batman. And that is kind of funny!

JollyHolly30 · 03/11/2019 02:56

@EachandEveryone These films are nothing to do with Marvel. It's DC.

JollyHolly30 · 03/11/2019 02:58

That should say 'These films you've mentioned..'

Baldcrusader · 04/11/2019 17:10

I loved it. Phoenix should win awards but probably won't as it's based on comics.

Is there really a definitive Canon for the joker? Unlike Bruce who's origin story is details surrounding a fairly consistent narrative, the jokers is way more varied.

No problem with it being one shot in nature. The best batman comics are the one shots. Killing Joke, arkham asylum and white Knight.

Would love to see a sequel with Harley too as it would be amazing to see two top leads bounce off each other.

sunnyflowerblooming · 05/11/2019 09:30

great movie! I won't give 10, but a strong 8 would be an honest grade.

Evilmorty · 05/11/2019 11:12

I like that it’s one shot and that the joker has no definitive canon. But I know some people are quite bothered by this in RL as well. I just enjoyed all the ambiguity really, I love a film with no answers.

And let’s face it, Bruce’s story is so overdone, this was something quite striking!
