Anyone seen it yet? Going tomorrow night with DD

Saw it this morning. I’m not usually a RZ fan but she makes you forget it’s her. Enjoyed it a lot, despite it being a sad story.

Davros · 05/10/2019 00:39

Enjoyed it but I've loved JG for many years. I assume RZ did her own singing which was great but not as good as Judy. I always thought she played the Palladium in her last visit here, I need to look up the info and about the last husband Shock

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/10/2019 00:46

Bloody fabulous. It’s got Oscar written all over it. Won’t give spoilers but I had to dab away the ‘something in my eye’ at the end. Even DH, who is a notorious movie ‘miserable git’ , thought it was excellent.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/10/2019 00:48

(Ps off to see Joker tomorrow, hoping for another Oscar worthy show!Smile)

NotSorry · 05/10/2019 09:03

@Davros I believe she did do her own singing as I’ve heard a few soundtracks on the radio this week. As you said, not bad but not as good Judy.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney - DD saw Joker last night, she said it’s VERY violent

The feel of this film reminded me of Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, both true stories with some parallels. I sat through watched the latest version of A Star is Born last week and I thought it was dreadful, not a patch on the Judy Garland one but just rubbish regardless.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 05/10/2019 10:07

Went to see this last night. Renee was brilliant and gives an excellent portrayal of Judy Garland but I have to say, the film made me dislike her.

How could a 47 year old women who had worked non stop for 45 years not have a home for her children? I don't get it.

MorrisZapp · 05/10/2019 10:09

The Times gave it a rave but stopped at 4 stars not 5 because of one particularly sentimental scene. Its Renee singing.

PaquitaVariation · 05/10/2019 10:11

She lost a lot of her money to her husbands and people who were supposed to be advising her. A lot of people in her life took advantage of her and used her to one extent or another, right from the very beginning.

Davros · 05/10/2019 11:01

I see Lorna Luft is on at the Crazy Coqs in Brasserie Zedel at the beginning of October. Tempting...

twosoups1972 · 06/10/2019 12:16

We're seeing it today. Is it ok for a 12 year old?

Honeyroar · 06/10/2019 12:18

Interesting. In the trailer I though Rene just looked like Rene, it didn't inspire me to watch it at all.

Davros · 06/10/2019 12:25

I don't know the certificate but I think it would be fine for a 12 year old, unless they find the subject matter boring

GaraMedouar · 06/10/2019 12:27

Fantastic film - I'm one of Judy's biggest fans. Renee sang, of course she's not Judy but did a good job and of course at the end Judy's voice was more ravaged with time so Renee didn't have to be her at her best. So sad - all the truth about the drugs she was forced to take etc - different times. Ok for a 12 year old , a small amount of swearing - '2 fucks' were said I think. I wouldn't take my 8 year old, quite a depressing film I suppose, would only take 12 year old if a Judy fan.

GaraMedouar · 06/10/2019 12:28

Lorna Luft was played by Bella Ramsey (Mildred Bubble from the Worst Witch)

PrivateSpidey · 06/10/2019 12:37

Can't wait to see it. Is it just about her later life/ comebacks or about her teenage years as well? I haven't read any reviews yet (apart from this thread). Interesting re Filmstars Don't Die in Liverpool - love that film Davros.

For anyone interested, there's a great podcast called You Must Remember This, about the old Hollywood era - there are loads of episodes about different actors, and there's an episode (or maybe 2) on Judy. They're so well done but terribly sad - but well worth a listen for anyone interested in Judy/that era in general.

NotSorry · 06/10/2019 16:47

@PrivateSpidey

It's mainly about her last tour in London but it flashes back to when she was a child actress too

We really enjoyed it, on more than one occasion when RZ was in profile, I could have sworn it was actually Judy - she was very good in the part

Thanks Not. Yes I like Renee - I think she's a bit underrated as an actress really. Looking forward to seeing it.

100PercentThatBitch · 06/10/2019 19:06

Thought it was very depressing, misery fest

Couldn't forget it was RZ she has a distinctive voice

maddiemookins16mum · 07/10/2019 06:31

We went yesterday, it was good. On about 2 very brief occasions I saw a flash of Bridget Jones. RW was very good though and you’d have to have a very hard heart not to be grasping a tissue at the end. Her last husband is played by Finn Witrock who was Dandy Mott in Freak Show (American Horror Story). It was a relief to see young Lady Mormont (Game of Thrones) looking alive and well too 🤣🤣

PrestonNotHeston · 09/10/2019 11:21

DH and I went to see it last night - he also wondered how such a successful star could end up with nothing. Depressingly (as another fan of You Must Remember This!) I could reel off endless examples of Hollywood women who earned millions for their studios, only to end up penniless or unemployed after disastrous marriages, expensive divorces, exploitative managers, bad contracts, etc. It's interesting that Lana Turner was taken on at MGM at roughly the same time as Judy Garland but as a glamour girl, not the girl next door; Lana ran off with Judy's crush, Artie Shaw - POOR JUDY - and then racked up another six husbands, one stabbed to death, and just kept on working till she died of throat cancer. Even if the female stars weren't hooked on uppers/downers, most of them smoked like chimneys to keep their weight down, so related diseases were really common.

I thought RZ was very good, although the Bridget-y face squinching was a bit distracting at times. Her jazzy pant suits were excellent. It reminded me a lot of Stan and Ollie, even down to the hotel suite, but that at least had a sort of redemptive warmth about it by the end. This was such a sad, sad film, right from the start - but I guess how could it be anything else?

Housewife2010 · 11/10/2019 05:24

I liked it but thought it could have been so much better. My favourite part was when she had an evening with her gay fans. I cry easily at films but was dry eyed throughout. I thought that Stan & Ollie was a far better film.

grumiosmum · 11/10/2019 08:03

Saw it last night & really enjoyed it. Thought RZ's acting was superb - surely a best actress Oscar nomination in the offing. And very impressed with her singing too. And fabulous outfits!

What a sad life she had.

I do think a child would be bored by the film unless they had a particular interest in JG.

PrestonNotHeston · 11/10/2019 12:56

The magic of Stan and Ollie was slightly ruined for me by DH's dad glumly informing us that he'd been to see Stan and Ollie at the Glasgow Empire in 1947, and they were 'keich'. Thanks, John.

Davros · 11/10/2019 13:18

One of Lana Turner's husbands wasn't only stabbed to death but her daughter did it!!!
