Sitting in the cinema with Ben & Jerry's wishing the adverts would finish.

Loved it. Had a little cry at the dowager/Mary scenes. Was very pleased for Barrow and for my most favourite Mr Branson.

Really wish they would make more for the TV. It's really needed at the moment I think. Bit of gentle escapism from everything of a Sunday evening.

I didn't really like Matthew Goode in Downton tbh so wasn't sad to not see much of him. After all, he's no Matthew is he?Grin

My only outstanding question was what happened to the burgeoning love between Mrs Patmore and whatshisname the Farmer who was her Father in law as was developing at the end of the TV series?

My friend and I were also the youngest people in the cinema but we were surrounded by family groups of Middle Aged people bringing their Nanas Smile. Surprising amount of men their too. One of the Nanas clapped at the beginning and the end Grin.

I went to the first showing yesterday. Only 4 in the cinema.

Really enjoyed it. I had a lol moment and I can’t remember what was said! I proper laughed. It was of course the Dowager who made the comment. Cried at the end.

Loved the costumes. So much more could come from it and I’d love more series.

Particularly loved Carson walking up the drive when lady Mary asked him back. His facial expressions were amazing. Loved Mr Mosley serving dinner.

VanillaSugarr · 16/09/2019 07:08

Re Daisy - Julian Fellowes has Form for this. I remember finding it distasteful when Branson emotionally blackmailed Sybil into stepping up their relationship: “if you really loved me, you would do this..”. Today’s woman would tell him to FOTTFSOF.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2019 21:19

I also wondered about Mr Mason and Mrs Patmore and also Tom and Edith's editor. Can't remember her name. It was implied at the wedding in the last episode.

I was the youngest on the cinema as well!

also Tom and Edith's editor. Can't remember her name. It was implied at the wedding in the last episode.

Typical of Fellowes, setting up a story line and then not having the attention span to carry it through. The number of characters who have bought houses to set up businesses in that show and then you never hear about it again... He is a fine writer of scenes, but absolutely hopeless with plotlines. No wonder the actors love him: it's a permanent showcase.

Haven't seen the film yet- how satisfactory is Barrow's story? Any chance of continuing happiness? Always seemed wrong to me that Edith could get away with inheriting a business from the married father of her illegitimate child without any awkward questions asked but poor Barrow could never be the slightest bit gay without immediate disaster because there was absolutely no queer scene in the 1920s, oooh no.

LazyLizzy · 18/09/2019 22:41

I really enjoyed it. Are they making another series as it was set up as if they had unfinished business.

Lots of story lines they could continue.

Moseley made me laughSmile.

Lolimax · 18/09/2019 22:46

Just back from watching it with DD (22) who was definitely the youngest in the audience!! Both loved it, every single minute. I came home to google Mary, knew nothing about her!!

jigsawmaniac · 18/09/2019 22:51

I went to see if tonight too. Thought it was a lovely film.

LBOCS2 · 18/09/2019 22:56

As it happens @corythatwas, a lot of those questions were answered in the film.

DSis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We were also the youngest in the cinema...

Flowersmakemyday · 18/09/2019 23:02

3catsandcounting, regarding people leaving litter in the cinema, ours has a notice up asking you to leave your litter by your seat so that they can recyle it properly. Still feels wrong to do it though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/09/2019 09:36

Ours asks you to leave litter at the seat too.

Loved it, loved all the Beamish scenes, having only been there a couple of days before.

I definitely want another one.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/09/2019 14:16

Laycock village being used as Downton village doesn't quite work though.

Just seen this film and really enjoyed it and I've never seen the TV series.

Abit confused who everyone was at first but it was a nice gentle film.

Mainly an older crowd who made me smile a few times when they gasped at the 'controversial ' moments.

May now binge watch the tv series, how many seasons was there?

historysock · 20/09/2019 06:31

6 series. I've just finished re watching them. I'm quite jealous of you getting to watch them as new...

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 20/09/2019 10:49

I loved the TV series but thought this was absolutely terrible! Such a clunky script and all the bits of plot were wrapped up ridiculously quickly. The bit where Lady Mary (SO wooden and given nothing to do) expresses her doubts to Anna about continuing to run the house and Anna launches into “But you’re the heart of the village M’Lady” [vom]. The way she treated Barrow by bringing Carson out of retirement with no consultation. The preposterous gay speakeasy in York. The way Tom stopped the king being assassinated and was still back home in time for tea. And the worst line EVER “The Queen’s dressmaker a thief- that will make the headlines from here to Peru!”.

Pretty frocks but otherwise dross. Sorry.

Apolloanddaphne · 20/09/2019 11:11

My 21yo DD2 finished the series on Monday night and we went to see the film on Tuesday on her day off. We were the youngest in the cinema by miles but it was great as it was so lovely and quiet! We both loved the film and liked that it tied up lots of loose ends.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2019 13:22

Totally ridiculous yes, but I loved how Tom saved the day!

QuimReaper · 20/09/2019 13:59

I saw it last week! It was rubbish as a film: the storylines were resolved ridiculously quickly and unsatisfyingly, to the point of fizzling, and all the dun-Dun-DUUUUUUUN! closeups on Mary's face when she kept hearing about knicknacks going missing were quite comical. The big "MATTHEW GOODE COULDN'T CLEAR HIS SCHEDULE" signalling at the beginning made me snigger, and I didn't much like the Daisy and Andy storyline.

But I loved every second of it Grin 2 hours of sheer bliss. Strictly for Downton fans, but I want to see it again. And possibly buy it on DVD. The day it comes out

QuimReaper · 20/09/2019 14:02

Haven't seen the film yet- how satisfactory is Barrow's story?

Barrows stole the show for me. And that's saying something with Imelda and Maggie in the room.

I really thought the Imelda/inheritance storyline was going to be that they were in love.

QuimReaper · 20/09/2019 14:07

The thing about Princess Mary deciding to stay with her arsehole bully of a husband was a bit misjudged too Confused

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 20/09/2019 17:59

Isn’t that based on fact though @QuimReaper? Or am I wrong?

Toddlerteaplease · 21/09/2019 09:56

From what I read it was a happy marriage. The king and Queen would never ever have let her have a divorce anyway. It would have been anathema, and sutra always came first.

OP posts:
cheeserolls · 21/09/2019 10:07

Do you need to have seen the series to see the film?

QuimReaper · 21/09/2019 10:09

Probably GoTo! Although I doubt her eyes were opened by a kindly wise Irish mechanic Grin Obviously they couldn't change the course of history and have them divorce or anything, but it was a very unsatisfactory resolution - they introduced the conflict for the sake of dramatic tension, but then the fallout was just that she'd put up with it and hope for the best, rather than that there'd be any real change. I think they just wanted the amusing scene of Tom talking to the princess without recognising her, so they shoehorned a "resolution" around it.

StealthPussy · 21/09/2019 10:09

Yes red flags for Daisy’s Andy. Nasty piece of work. I wonder if it was a subtle set up for a possible future movie where Daisy has a domestic abuse storyline.
