Just seen this and thought it was fab.

Had been a bit put off by some reviews saying it was an overlong snooze fest with no real story line but didn't think that at all. Great acting from Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

I also thought it was fantastic, and lived up to the many 5 star reviews

EachandEveryone · 17/08/2019 21:40

Damian Lewis looked exactly like Steve Macqueen. I loved it and I imagine there will be afew Oscars going its way.

Littlemissmax · 18/08/2019 02:33

Can't wait to go see this, looks so good.

nowifi · 18/08/2019 09:01

I didn't have any knowledge of the Manson murders and didn't realise who anyone was meant to be so the whole film didn't make any sense to me! Now I've read it I understand!

Toooldtobearsed2 · 18/08/2019 10:21

Yes, thinking about it, the film would appeal far more to an older audience who knows the real characters involved.
I am trying to imagine watching it without knowing anything about the characters or the horrendous Manson murders and I dont think I would have liked the film at all. Would have been very 🤔
Never thought of that...... never been so happy to be old before 🤣🤣🤣

grumiosmum · 18/08/2019 10:41

Very good plot twist at the end but I thought the film took way too long to get to the point.

Typical self-indigent Tarantino.

We went with DS who obviously knew nothing of the Manson murders so had to explain that to him afterwards

Awesome acting, cinematography, and soundtrack - as you would expect. But they could have taken half an hour out of it and it would have been better for it.

Liked the ranch scenes the best. Genuinely suspenseful.

nowifi · 18/08/2019 10:49

Yes I didn't read any reviews beforehand as I thought it would spoil it but in this case you need to know the story before watching, I spent the whole film not knowing what was happening! Enjoyed the end though Grin

ChequerBoard · 18/08/2019 11:06

OK I might have to go see it just to experience Damien Lewis as Steve McQueen....

MsSafina · 18/08/2019 11:53

Went to see it Thursday. I loved it and am buying the soundtrack. It was a real homage to the era of that time. Just full of energy and fun.

grumiosmum · 18/08/2019 11:56

ChequerBoard Damian Lewis is on screen for 5 minutes tops.

EachandEveryone · 18/08/2019 14:25

Did anyone else think that the family where waiting in Sharon’s house as well? For a second I had an awful feeling that Leo was being lured there.

chemenger · 18/08/2019 16:11

I went with three other people in their 50’s. One knew nothing about the Sharon Tate murder so was slightly mystified. One fell asleep for a while and missed the Italian movie section so spent much of the last scenes wondering who the “Spanish” lady was. That’s the problem with heated, reclining cinema seats Smile. I really enjoyed it, there are so many points where it seems to be leading to drama and then doesn’t, which makes it interesting. For example when Rick has his tantrum about messing up a scene then does the great scene with the little girl. Or when Cliff goes to the ranch. The final fight where Cliff is stoned so doesn’t really realise what he’s doing is gruesome but also really funny. Go Brandy!

grumiosmum · 18/08/2019 16:28

Did anyone else think that the family where waiting in Sharon’s house as well?

No, I'm fairly sure that the point where Leo walks through the gates to Polanski's house was supposed to symbolise a new and hopeful fresh start to his hitherto declining career.

EachandEveryone · 18/08/2019 16:44

It was just for a fleeting moment when he was going towards the gate I suddenly thought god, don’t let there be more up there.

nowifi · 18/08/2019 18:21

Yes grumio that's how I saw it too

Northernlurker · 18/08/2019 18:29

I've read about the murder of Sharon Tate and it is one of those unbelievably awful events that you really do wish you could change the ending and have it not happen. So the fact that that is what Tarantino has done is something I find quite intriguing. That's the point of Hollywood isn't it, you can have the ending you want. I think there are problematic aspects to the film in the portrayal of Tate but at least she makes it to the end of the film. Better than reality......

Kewlwifee · 18/08/2019 18:31

It was too long for me.

Also I went with friends who didn't know who Sharon Tate was so it was completely lost on them.

CuriousMama · 21/08/2019 23:40

I went with ds1 tonight. He's 21 and said it is now his favourite Tarantino film. He didn't know who Sharon Tate was. I explained on the way home and he said that made it even better.

I really enjoyed it. I felt quite emotional at the end thinking if only....Sad

Gonegrey31 · 23/08/2019 20:05

Did anyone stay right to the end when the final credits were rolling? I wasn’t sure that the scene depicted fits Grumio’s theory .....did not know what to make of it

nowifi · 23/08/2019 21:26

You mean after the final credits gonegrey ? I didn't see, what happened?

NoSquirrels · 23/08/2019 21:30

It was just a spoof ad for cigarettes, wasn’t it? Not sure it signified much...

Gonegrey31 · 23/08/2019 21:43

I thought it meant that Leo’s career had not gone well and that he was now reduced to advertising cigarettes, but I was walking out of the cinema so might have misinterpreted it

Toitoitoi · 24/08/2019 17:58

Fantastic film. Tarantino is known for switching up historical events in his film endings and this one he does phenomenally well. Just thought Brad Pitt was incredible. I don't think I have seen him act so well. This is a new beginning for him for sure, kinda like John Travolta. The scenes with him driving around were my favourite bits tbh.

As pp said if you are older or have previous knowledge of this era and the Mansons it makes it all the more fascinating. The Manson murders pretty much ended the hippie movement.

I think Sharon Tates lack of words was about the other characters distance from that glamorous and successful world. She was like an untouchable goddess. Roman Polanski had fewer words I think anyway.

Sorry I have said enough! Smile

Doilooklikeatourist · 25/08/2019 08:28

I loved the film and would like to see it again
Leo and Brad were brilliant together , their acting was superb throughout
I’m old , so when Sharon Tate appeared , I was dreading her murder , she was so likeable
Even the bloody violence at the end was watchable ( and I don’t like bloody violence )
Loved the soundtrack too !

origamiunicorn · 25/08/2019 08:35

Damian Lewis looked exactly like Steve Macqueen

Really?! DP and I thought he looked nothing like him.
