Harry Potter Anyone?

Loved Luna and Bellatrix. Sirius is still and will always be wrong

The only 2 bits I got narked by this time were quidditch (or lack of) and Cho Chang - there is editing and changing

Other than that its the Harry Potter I have enjoyed the most at the cinema (although to be fair it is the one I've left the longest gap between book and film so I can't remember as much and play spot the changes!).

One question though - Harry and the cardigan... WHY?!?!!

Sorry seem to have typed everything twice , wonder how I managed that sorry

roisin · 14/07/2007 21:54

We saw it today for ds1's birthday, and it was fab. I was very impressed by the acting.

Portrayal of Delores Umbridge was spot on, Daniel Radcliffe was ace. I really like Sirius. Dh loved Bellatrix.

Of course there are lots of "shame they missed out" bits; but generally I think they did a good job in the cutting to make a reasonable length film.

Ds1 has just had lots of cash for his birthday, and I'm hoping to persuade him to buy the new HP Scene-It!

MrsWeasley · 14/07/2007 21:56

Sorry I forgot to mention much about Sirius which is unlike me as I think he is bldy sexy in the hp films. He looked very good indeed

BandofMuggles · 14/07/2007 22:02

MrsW, you make me LMAO

MrsWeasley · 14/07/2007 22:06

jolly good, I aim to please,

IdrisTheDragon · 14/07/2007 22:10

DH and I saw this last night and enjoyed it . Have realised how long it has been since I read HP5 though. Have set myself the (unlikely) task of reading it and HP6 before next Saturday .

persephonesnape · 15/07/2007 18:13

just back obviously tons of spoliers here, so please don't read if you don't want to.

wrong :-

petunia didn't reveal that she knew what 'dementoids' were. I do feel this is important for the book, although obviously not for the films

no brains! no bell jar!

didn't like that snape got occumalted/leglimensed and harry saw the memory. part of snape is that he is wary of potter so pops the memory in the pensieve. memory not long enough ( you see james and a glimpse of pettigrew behind him, but i couldn't focus on a sirius and i assume Lupin would have been disapproving from the sidelines. also no lily!

could have made more of the fact that Luna is bullied and James was a bully. a bit too subtle - also (hemhem!) does hogwarts have an anti bullying policy? Luna just accepts it ( this would be a criticism of the books as well i guess)

no firenze!

Right:-

casting of Luna. adorable. love how she skips

Umbridge. fabulous. love the little insane giggle ta the end of a sentence. costuming amazing ( anyone see that on ITV last night btw?) also the inspections ( you applied for the posistion of defence of the dark arts professor?' 'yeesssssssssss')

young snape. rarrrrrgh!

Ginnys cross little face when Harry is mooning over cho ( i would like to see her a bit gingerer though - she is quite dull of hair)

Snape appearing in harrys mirror of whatever it's called. fab.

bella. just nuts enough. hope she isn't hacked out too much in the next two. wasn't too keen on her avading sirius, pretty sure he stumbled or was stupified.

I liked the tapestry, but i kept trying to get a look at narcissa. i do hope they cast her for the next one. where was mundungus btw?

the films, out of necessity leave SO much out.

am geek.

FlameDelacour · 15/07/2007 20:00

I was really annoyed with the lack of the others fighting in the ministry - it gave them no glory at all. The prefects too

I couldn't remember how Harry originally saw Snape's memory, but I was thinking that the occlumency seemed wrong as he is meant to be so great which is how the double/triple how ever many agents he is meant to be works.

I have just got back from seeing it too. I enjoyed it while it was on (but then I am a total HP nut and in love with the character of Harry) but the minute it was over I saw it more for what it was and I have to say I have been left a bit disappointed. I know to compare it with the book is ludicrous but the book has soooooo much more. Not just plotlines but also lighter moments, cleverer moments (I was so looking forward to the twins' finale but it was done wrong) and the whole Harry dreaming Voldemort's thoughts bit wasn't really shown properly IMO.

Also, the final fight in the ministry was wrong. I don't think V should have said to D "You lose old man" or whatever he said, and he also shouldn't have said to H "You will lose in the end". That is not in the books.

Also, I wanted Harry and Dumbledore's big scene at the end.

Oh and Michael Gambon is wrong wrong wrong.... but I have said that before!

But apart from that, it was OK!

RosaLuxembourg · 16/07/2007 00:33

Yes I saw it with eight 10-year-olds today. They were all riveted. I was disappointed with two things in particular - the Fred and George exit - so downplayed and what a wasted opportunity. Also the fight in the Ministry didn't give anything like a sense of what was in the book - very sanitised presumably in order to keep the certificate low. Imelda Staunton was great and so was Luna.

MrsWeasley · 16/07/2007 00:41

The battle is the worse bit I reckon. Its not a battle as the book describes more of a scuffle! I remember reading the book for the first time and literally being on the edge of my seat, I couldn't put it down!

janeitebus · 16/07/2007 19:08

Is it me or do the Death Eaters just look like Darth Vadar? I really didn't like their masks; not at all as I'd pictured them.

Also cutting down the fight so much meant that had to remove one of the best lines in the book - "Accio brain"!

There's lots that I could be really picky about but on the whole I really, really liked it - mainly because the pace was so much faster than the previous films. And Daniel Radcliffe's acting has improved substantially.

lyrasdaemon · 17/07/2007 12:57

Having read the book (and enjoyed it, unlike a lot of people) I was irritated by the changes that were made in the movie adaptation. I understand that, by necessity large sections of the book had to be removed (the trip to St Mungos Hospital, for instance), but there were too many unnecessary differences between book and film, for example:

Book: Dobby shows Harry Potter where to find the Room of Requirement;
Film: Neville Longbottom accidentally discovers the Room of Requirement.

Book: Marietta Edgecombe reports the activities to the DA to Dolores Umbridge;
Film: Cho Chang is forced to admit to the existence of the DA by the use of Veritaserum (a truth-telling potion).

Book: The prophecy is smashed in the Department of Mysteries before Harry Potter can hear it (Dumbledore later informs Harry of the contents of the prophecy);
Film: Harry removes the prophecy from the shelf in the Department of Mysteries and hears what it says.

On the positive side, the acting was on the whole, excellent, particularly from Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge) and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood). Alan Rickman also continues his superbly sinister rendering of Professor Snape. However, I remain to be convinced by Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. Richard Harris is sorely missed in this role.

In short, if you want a rollicking good movie, with some dark, adult themes thrown in for good measure, then this is the film for you. If you are after a faithful adaptation of the book, you will be disappointed.

jellybeans · 19/07/2007 19:46

I like it alot but not as much as other HP films, stil good though.

Nymphadora · 19/07/2007 19:57

Loved the fireplaces and the ministry of magic and Kreature was good but they did cut him too much

Gary Olmans hair was gorgeous

Didn't like the Cho bits and the quidditch being cut.Oh and F&Gs exit and the battle could have been done better!

Liked it better than the other films though.

Oh and I don't like Dumbledore- too loud

(WELL SAID LYRA Btw)

dobbysayswoofbutisnotinthefilm · 19/07/2007 20:16

I saw it today and really enjoyed it. I was narked by a couple of edits/changes but I could see why most of the changes were made - long scenes with no action and just talking, like Harry/Dumbledore at the end, don't tend to work so well in films. would have slowed down the pace.

Also the books can obviously include many more minor characters, like Marietta Edgecombe - more difficult to do this in a movie.

I thought the direction and the performances were great. Even Michael Gambon was better in this one imo. Imelda Staunton flawless.

Kreacher's appearance was a cameo really, but I heard that he was going to be written out of the film altogehter and JKR told them that he was too important for future episodes to miss out...

taxidriver · 24/07/2007 22:56

the book is faded in my memory.
just saw film. i was absolutely enthralled. special affects fantastic. younger actors just a tiny bit wooden, but older pros brilliant. bellatrix well cast.
really really enjoyed it. best harry potter.

taxidriver · 24/07/2007 22:59

very nearly cried at sirius' demise.
that was veyr upsetting in book too

StrwBry · 24/07/2007 23:05

I thought it was cack! Talk about squeezing a 5 hour film (one of the longest books) into an hour and 45 mins.

I wont be buying it on dvd.

taxidriver · 24/07/2007 23:11

oh go on

StrwBry · 24/07/2007 23:13

Oh o.k, if you insist lol.

MadEyeMisdee · 24/07/2007 23:17

was a bit disappointed in the film, but so many bits missing. say it after each film, they cut so much which is important to the storyline.

MadEyemarthamooDy · 24/07/2007 23:26

I saw it on Friday and really enjoyed it - book 5 is (imo) the weakest of all the books and I thought the film condensed it nicely.

Think Gary Oldfield is perfectly cast as Sirius! Loved Luna. Imelda Staunton was marvellous. Oh but I miss Richard Harris as Dumbledore - he was Dumbledore.

I still think the weakest thing about all the films is Daniel Radcliffe - he just doesn't work as Harry for me. Hermione has got better as the films have gone on - she doesn't do that " I shall over enunciate every word of my dialogue" quite so much now. And Rupert Grint is just genius casting. Ditto Julie Walters.

MadEyeMisdee · 24/07/2007 23:27

luna was perfect casting.
