I've got some of DD's friends coming over for Halloween - they are all 13. What would be an appropriate scary movie to show them? They have all seen Miss Peregrine's House, Coraline, Nightmare Before Xmas which would have been my suggestions.

Jaws isn't scary in the same way women in black is scary.

Fwend · 23/10/2018 18:52

Definitely Labyrinth. ''Tis a classic!

redandyellowand · 23/10/2018 20:12

What about Scary Movie. It’s a 12 and along the scary theme but more of a comedy.

Sammilouwho · 23/10/2018 20:19

The Craft! I used to love that film around that age. I do love horror now though, definitely would not show Woman in Black to a 13yr old.

bigbassdrumbanger · 23/10/2018 22:36

There is one called the hole on amazon prime, rated 12. Follows a pretty traditional horror formula, but without the gore, guts and violence you might get in a 15 rated film. I'm intending to show it for a Halloween movie night to dd 12 and her friends

Blarneybear · 24/10/2018 04:16

Have you seen The Hole? It's terrifying!! Grin

LadyGAgain · 24/10/2018 05:43

We watched arachnophobia for a sleepover when my friend turned 13 (yep, almost 30 years ago) and it scared the life out of us!

Gabina84 · 24/10/2018 08:00

Women in black and final destination

HippyChickMama · 24/10/2018 09:29

@Blarneybear there is a later film called 'The Hole' which is a 12A, I don't think it's the one with Thora Birch in (which is like the film representation of fever induced nightmares).
Ooh, Tremors would be a good one or how about an old horror like The Blob? House on Haunted Hill (not to be confused with The Haunting of Hill House) is a 12 but still a bit jumpy.

Blarneybear · 24/10/2018 09:37

Yeah that's the one I meant Grin

CryingMessFFS · 24/10/2018 09:54

Ooh yes Arachnophobia and The Craft are good ones!

CryingMessFFS · 24/10/2018 09:55

The Others and The Village too

Taffeta · 24/10/2018 10:02

My DD loves Coraline which you said she’d already seen

I’d continue the Tim Burton theme with Edward Scissorhands or Frankenweenie

SergeantPfeffer · 24/10/2018 10:11

The ‘Burbs? Old tom hanks movie that builds up as a scary film but is actually a comedy. I think it’s a PG. Used to love it as a teen.
What about the Indiana jones films (if they haven’t seen them already)?

rainingcatsanddog · 24/10/2018 10:40

Haven't seen any scary movies at 13? Wow.
I don't know ratings off the top of my head but

Gremlins
The Others
Woman in White (this was a 12a at the cinema. I took year 6s to watch this )
What Lies Beneath
Spirited Away
Coraline
Psycho
The Shining
Poltergeist
Batman (Jack Nicholson as the Joker)
Labyrinth
Twilight

rainingcatsanddog · 24/10/2018 10:41

Warm Bodies

rainingcatsanddog · 24/10/2018 10:44

Woman in Black not Woman in White- sorry!

puddingjuly · 24/10/2018 10:50

Krampus

misskatamari · 24/10/2018 11:01

Eeek not the woman in black! That scared the crap out of my at the cinema as an adult lol! Final destination and the craft are good suggestions in my view. They're good teenager horror films that aren't too scary. Ahh tremors, that's also brilliant! Used to love that when younger. We used to watch loads of scary horrors when I was younger tho, I definitely saw pet Sematary in primary school (thanks mum!) and that scared the crap out of me for years! I'd aim for something that isn't ghostly spooky scary as personally I find those kind of films stay with me and creep me out after, whereas something a bit more human and silly/gory doesn't scare me as much. As a teen anything spooky would have definitely had more of a long lasting scary impact (if that makes sense)

misskatamari · 24/10/2018 11:01

Warm bodies and Krampus are also great as pp suggest!

ShatnersBalloonFromPennywise · 24/10/2018 11:22

YY to The 'Burbs! I love that film, brilliant cast and genuinely funny. Very slightly creepy, not at all scary.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/10/2018 13:04

Warm bodies is fab

beansonbread · 24/10/2018 18:40

I remember watching Scream for the first time when I was 13. Me and my friends watched it in broad daylight but yet I was still petrified! Ended up having nightmares for weeks. Even now, nearly 20 years later, I still can't watch it or even look at that awful mask! I did spend a lot of time aged 13-15 watching every horror/slasher/thriller going and now can't watch anything without being terrified, you'd think I'd get less scared not more!

My suggestions would be Edward Scissorhands or maybe The Haunting.

At 13 there's a high chance of them being really scared and imaginations often run wild at that age. I know my 13 year old niece was freaked out by some of the scenes in Goosebumps but yet has devoured all the books, putting it on screen made her much more scared than she expected to be.

SergeantPfeffer · 24/10/2018 18:48

What about Super 8?

Whistle73 · 24/10/2018 21:34

The Shining as an entry level scary film? For 13 year olds? Are you joking?
