A Star is Born

Just been to a preview screening.

Very emotional film. Liked it more than I thought I would.

Is it the best film of this year as per the hype? Not for me but it is good and well taking time out to see.

Great acting from Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott.

Sadly the wooden acting of whoever played her manager really let the film down with a bizarre British accent and stilted delivery.

Bit too long.

I would recommend it - take the tissues.

Gaga is incredibly talented. Not only does she sing and play the piano, but she writes most of her music too. She co-wrote the bulk of the songs on the SiB soundtrack. Cooper wrote a few too.

I think they've both got the Golden Globes for acting in a musical/comedy in the bag, but what will happen come Oscar time? They'll definitely be nominated, Cooper possibly for directing too.

In consideration of Oscars and Globes at the Globes it will likely face off against Mary Poppins Returns and Bohemian Rhapsody and though I think Rami Malek might win for Freddie I think A Star Is Born will take the other categories.

At the Oscars it will go up against some or all of this lot

Widows (Steve McQueen)
Mary, Queen Of Scots (Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan)
The Favourite (Olivia Colman, Emma Stone)
Beautiful Boy (Steve Carell, Timothee Chalamet)
Blackkklansman (Spike Lee)
Bohemian Rhapsody (Rami Malek)
Green Book (Viggo Mortensen)
First Man (Ryan Gosling, Damien Chazelle)

I think Gaga will have a fight on her hands but still win. I think it will win the music categories and maybe adapted screenplay but Widows might beat it to that or Beautiful Boy.

Bradley Cooper might win Best Director he'll certainly be nominated but whether they'll endorse him so heavily with his debut when both Scorsese and Spielberg were made to wait decades seems unlikely.

Anyway it's marked the start of the season which I'm really looking forward to. Smile

We saw it last night and loved it but I haven't cried so much in ages.

I'm very excited about Bohemian Rhapsody.

Plan to see Widows too, I'm hoping they do it justice, I remember the original tv series because I'm that old

@PurpleNailVarnish I also remember it but must have seen a repeat because I was 2 in 1983 Grin

Maybe I saw a repeat too because I was below secondary school age in 1983 @PawneeParksDept.
I do remember loving it, my hope is that it's not a Real Housewives Of... pastiche of the original.

Btw I loved Parks and Recreation too, DH just didn't get it Confused

@PurpleNailVarnish

It's all about Leslie / Ron / April / Andy for me some of the other characters don't work (I'm looking at you Tom Haverford) but when it's at its best it's amazing

Who could fail to find the Get On Your Feet Sequence comedy gold?

Tom and Ben were weaker, I thought but I loved Ron, obviously.
It's a beauty, isn't it?

Chris Traeger was the weakest I never saw the point.

Yes it's wonderful and so quotable

I thought it was good. Musically not the biggest Gaga fan but in the film the music and her acting is awesome. Hope she does more in the future.

I’ve always been a huge Gaga fan from the start and Bradley Cooper is on “the list” in my house. That said, as much as I cried, it isn’t Oscar worthy, I don’t think. It’s good but too long and too much ego.

I’m really hoping the Oscar for best actress, so far this year, goes to either Thomasin Mackenzie in Leave No Trace or Elsie Fisher in Eighth Grade (movie of the year for me).

I don't think Leave No Trace will get near the Oscars unfortunately - I'd be very surprised.

Saw it last night and thought it was stunning, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga both fabulous.

If I had one minor whinge, I thought the type of artist they made her was a bit out of sync - would have thought something a bit more Adele-ish/country would have been more in keeping - but didn't stop me thinking it a fantastic film.

Some great songs in the soundtrack too.

I enjoyed this a lot. I loved the music, especially the more rock style music. I don't really like "Lady Gaga style music" and I thought it was quite amusing that when she was supposed to be "selling out" she moved more in that direction - after seeing this, I kind of hope she produces more of that gutsy, bluesy style in real life.

@foxtiger her most recent album Joanne is way more in that vein than the earlier stuff

I never seen such a stunned audience. They were totally silent during the film and as soon as it stopped they started talking about it.
Ive always like Bradley Cooper, but Lady Gaga i wouldnt recognise and could never name any of her songs , although i know them when i hear them.
It was one of the best films I've seen in ages definitely oscar worthy for Lady GaGa

I'M NOT CRYING IT'S JUST BEEN A WHILE SINCE I VACUUMED!

I had to wait till the end of the credits too as I was a mess! Obsessed with Lady Gaga now. Had been meaning to buy Joanne but definitely doing that straight away now.

As far as the soundtrack, I really am only in love with "Shallow" so will probably just buy that. Amazing song, amazing vocals.

Aaaahhhh I'm still in bits!

So worth seeing, omg.
