Watching LOTR on telly and I'm a bit overwhelmed. Same when I was a teenager. This is my insuring film crush. He's actually perfect.

Anyone else?

OP posts:

Agree - fwoaarrghh Grin. My husband loves the LOTR films - he watches them regularly on DVD, but I only look up at the Aragorn bits.

littlejeopardy · 12/04/2017 23:52

chavelita I know, me too. I miss the excitement of those days, unbridled joy at the release of an extended DVD edition!

Oh and Judge Dredd is an awesome and completely overlooked film. Urban was also the CIA agent in RED. Best thing in that film.

flapjackfairy · 13/04/2017 06:46

Can i ask a question of you LOTR buffs plesse?
How is it that Legolas never runs out if arrows after firing what seems like hundreds each battle. Are they magic with him being an elf ? Or are you not supposed to think that deeply about it ?

Copperas · 13/04/2017 07:02

And how does Sam produce unsquashed tomatoes halfway up a mountain?

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 13/04/2017 07:04

Legolas does run out of arrows at Helms Deep in the book and has to scavenge for more

OldBooks · 13/04/2017 07:07

Take a grubby man in need of a haircut, put him on a horse and give him a sword to wave about and I'm sold, every time.

HELL YES

flapjackfairy · 13/04/2017 07:19

Ah thanks Actually so a bit of artistic licence there then !

weaselwords · 13/04/2017 07:33

Best Aragorn moment for me is him jumping over the side of the ship with all the ghosts behind him. I hope that wasn't cgi.

Eowyn > Arwen for the line "I am no man!". Arwen is really wet in the books.

Lemuriformes · 13/04/2017 08:07

Eomer/Karl Urban fans should check out futuristic police series Almost Human for lots of hot, brooding Mr Urban action. Oh yes.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 13/04/2017 08:46

Middle Earth equivalent of the Banana Guard?

flapjackfairy · 13/04/2017 09:13

I love the bit where Gandalf delivers Theoden . I love it when Aragorn and co are dealing with the guards whilst Gandalf approaches the king who is laughing at this point .
You see Legolas and Aragorn bobbing around in the background manfully despatching the opposition. Swoon!!
I think that is a great scene and when Gandalf throws off his cape and the music swells i can feel myself welling up. Wonderful !

lostlalaloopsy · 13/04/2017 09:16

I like a bit of rough!! Love Aragon in first 2 films, not so keen on the 3rd. He's a bit too well groomed by then!

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 13/04/2017 09:16

I had a massive crush on strider from reading the book. Viggo didn't disappoint me.

AlIsPoison · 13/04/2017 09:19

Arwen is full of grief when Aragorn dies (he chooses when to die as he has been given that grace by the Valar) and wanders Middle Earth for a bit, then ends up in Lothlorien which has long since been deserted by the Elves. She lies down on the hill where she and Aragorn became betrothed (Calas Ga-something?) and dies.

Their children are mortal but have long life spans.

The reason the Elves left Middle Earth was because their power was waning until the Rings were made. The power of the Rings enabled them to stay in Middle Earth for longer but it came down to a) keep the Rings and have the power to sustain Rivendell / Lothlorien etc but have Middle Earth ruled by psycho evil boss Sauron or b) destroy the Ring but the spectacular places sustained by Elf magic diminish and the Elves have to pass into the West.

Chavelita · 13/04/2017 09:46

Thanks to those who have retained the details of Middle Earth better than I did. (In fairness, I think I read the novels the summer I turned ten, which is not today or yesterday.)

Can I ask the well-informed what it actually means for the Elves to 'pass into the west' -- what happens when they leave from the Grey Havens? Presumably it's not an Elf-specific thing, are Frodo goes too? (What about Gandalf?)

ErrolTheDragon · 13/04/2017 09:52

It's a long time since I read LOTR, but some of the backstory details are from Silmarillion, aren't they? I found it unreadable, so thanks to those of you with more dedication.Grin

JessicaEccles · 13/04/2017 13:20

'She lies down on the hill where she and Aragorn became betrothed (Calas Ga-something?) and dies.'

GOOOD Arwen is SO wet! This has annoyed me all over again. Eowyn was lovely- and such great hair.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 13/04/2017 13:21

Tiny little teeth though. Smile

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 13/04/2017 13:23

The bit in one of the films where Arwen starts crying needs a hose whinny soundtrack. To DH's disgust, I actually provided one. In the cinema. Out loud.
Couldn't help myself.

AlIsPoison · 13/04/2017 18:01

Arwen was very wet, wasn't she Grin Eowyn was much, much better. In TTT film Aragorn was a bit of a twat to her - all lingering glances and touches and Arwen wasn't even gone yet Sad

Passing into the west - Elves could go and live for ever in Valinor (?), I think it was a restful place for them for some reason or other. Other races couldn't so the Elves made the island of Numenor for them and the men who lived there had longer lives. Then Sauron (who was a prisoner on the island) tricked the Numenoreans into believing they deserved to live in Valinor so one of the Kings decided to go there. The Elves sank Numenor to stop it happening. Sauron escaped (in spirit form, I think) and the son/s of the King - Aragorn's ancestors.

I think that's right - it's been a while!

IAmAPaleontologist · 13/04/2017 18:22

Ah a Lotr discussion. I too love Aragon. I have been head over the heels ever since I first read the book many moons ago and I still love him. If it came to a choice between Aragon and dh then Aragon would win every time. I'm currently reading Lotr to ds1 and keep drifting off into little fantasy worlds. Of course we will have to watch the films once we've done reading.

Mummymathsteacher · 13/04/2017 18:37

I have finally found my people.

Aragorn in FotR is perfection.

AlIsPoison · 14/04/2017 08:47

Whoever said Aragorn's the perfect balance of tough yet tender is so spot on.

I bet Arwen was really disappointed after he became all kingly and clean Sad

OldBooks · 14/04/2017 08:48

Best Aragorn moment for me is when he opens those big double doors at Helms Deep.

My colleague is as much of a LOTR fan as me and the other day we pushed open some big doors, one to each side, and he looked at me and said "Aragorn"

dementedma · 14/04/2017 09:00

another Aragorn fan here, both book and films. Love the door pushing scene as he rescues King Theoden, and the banter with Gimli.
Also the call to arms for the final battle "..it shall not be this day! "
Whew! battle of Helm's Deep is an amazing film sequence - the arrival of the elves "You are MOST welcome", and the whole battle is amazing.
