Anyone else going to see it tonight?

DH and I have had our tickets booked for weeks Grin We also decided to gamble on it being brilliant and booked ourselves in for a showing tomorrow evening as well Blush

After being cynical right up until seeing Force Awakens and being pleasantly surprised I've allowed myself to have high hopes for this one. The cast is pretty solid and the trailers have all been impressive so fingers crossed I won't be disappointed!!

Pedestrian story, not enough aliens, no humour

You already know the rough story from a new hope but I personally really liked the way they interpreted it and the new characters they brought into it. Having so many of the minor characters from the other movies also show up made me smile.

There is no place for loads of aliens in it. Star Wars has never been about the aliens it's about the droids and the rebels vs the imperials. The minor character aliens were mostly present and correct.

Again I don't think humour has a massive place in this particular story. The story is too intense to warrant it. It would look out of place being there.

It's nicely done as a Star Wars story that has the essence of Star Wars but isn't a "proper Star Wars movie" in feel. This is spot on as that's what it is supposed to be.

sweetkitty · 17/12/2016 00:27

Just back from watching it with my 12, 10, 8 and 6 yos.

Personally I thought it was a bit dull. It though action at the start, characters u couldn't warm too and a very predictable ending, ok I knew it had to be like that to tie in with a New Hope but it could have had a few surprises.

BendyBusBuggy · 17/12/2016 05:30

I hope this is not a spoiler:

When we came out of the cinema DD (9) said :'At the end you could tell Darth Vader was in a mood' Grin.

vvviola · 17/12/2016 08:59

DD1 (9 and a massive Star Wars fan) went to see it with DH last night. She was very upset by it - although I think she did love it. (She's still asleep!).

I think it's very emotionally intense. I wish I'd looked at some spoilers and prepared her for it a bit. (DH had looked, but he had misjudged how she would react to certain things)

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 17/12/2016 10:54

Maybe the thing to do now is get her to watch Episode IV: A New Hope over the weekend.

I did that last night and it cheered me up Blush

vvviola · 17/12/2016 11:01

Yes, I had thought to put on The Force Awakens, but I think A New Hope might be a good choice.

She's awake now and assured me that she did love it, but she's still a bit wobbly, bless her.

TheNaze73 · 17/12/2016 21:47

Saw it with my 12 year old daughter this afternoon in 4DX & we both loved it.

I'm a Star Wars fan & have been virtually all my life & after the distinctly average prequels was very pleasantly surprised at just how good it was. It's no Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope but, definitely up there with The Force Awakens & Return Of The Jedi.

Great again, that there is a good, inspiring female lead character like The Force Awakens

QueenLizIII · 17/12/2016 22:18

Does it matter if you haven't seen the latest wave of films.

TheNaze73 · 17/12/2016 22:34

Not at all QueenLiz

You could watch this as a standalone film.

vvviola · 17/12/2016 23:40

We watched A New Hope again this evening and all is right with the world again. DD1 suggested that she could take me to the cinema tomorrow to see it, so she has obviously recovered Grin

amispartacus · 18/12/2016 14:19

Loved it. Loved the little eggs they put in.

KS2 - very funny character.

"Does it bother you seeing the Imperial flag everywhere?"

"Not if you don't look up" - great quote.

Mama1980 · 18/12/2016 17:51

I've booked to take my 9 year old to see it tomorrow, but just read spoilers online and am having a wobble. He's generally practical and very matter of fact....will he be ok? I know what happens so if anyone whose seen it could pm me any details (deliberately being vague here) I'd appreciate it. Thanks

amispartacus · 18/12/2016 17:54

mama

It's not scary - the earlier ones were much more graphic. If you haven't seen the original Star Wars, then I think you might want to watch that first.

DS and I had a debate about that. Would it stand alone or do you have to follow it up ASAP...

It's got good talking points about fighting for a cause.

Kirriemuir · 24/12/2016 17:27

We saw it yesterday and didn't like it. The CGI was amazing but the story was dull. Film too long and DS was bored. That same boy who has watched force awakens over and over.

DS is 10 and being honest I think a lot of of families took kids based on force awakens and had kids fidgeting all over the place. I don't think it's suitable for kids at all. Not because of violence but the intense story and it just goes and on and on with no real action.

Beebeeeight · 24/12/2016 17:56

We are big SW fans and loved it

Ds says it's his favourite of all the films.

I'd put it 3rd after NH and ROTJ.

DD puts it 2nd after FA.

I want to go again!

It is sad though :-(

PhilODox · 25/12/2016 00:58

So, DH and I went to see it, and enjoyed it.
We think our 10yo would be fine, but not the 7yo. It's v fast cut at the beginning, and not sure the 7yo would follow what was happening.

I loved the way Jeddah had real echoes of SW Rebels, particularly the colours/events there.
I also think cassian is kind of how Ezra would be when grown up.

M0stlyHet · 28/12/2016 21:12

I've just been to see it and loved it. Can we have a "discussions with spoilers" thread, or is there not enough mileage (see this thread hasn't been posted on for 3 days!)

Anniegetyourgun · 29/12/2016 20:03

Went to see it last night with 3 adult DC. Enjoyed (except for the nitpicker in the family who admitted afterwards that he doesn't really do films, thanks for telling us!). I hope it's not heretical to say we felt it was a better film overall than The Force Awakens. The tone was, as others have said, very dark, but that is to be expected given what we already knew of the story from A New Hope. Visuals could hardly have been more stunning, and there were surprise appearances by characters from the original; it was a bit "spot the CG"! I was the only member of the party who found Captain Andor rather pleasing to the eye.

Spoiler of sorts: I had an emotional turn at the very last moment in the very last scene. Tried to explain it to the others, choked up twice and had to leave it for a few minutes before getting the words out. I think they did understand, though - even the nitpicker. Had we watched it, say, about a week ago it wouldn't have had quite so much effect (though I probably would still have got a bit tearful, soppy old thing that I am).

M0stlyHet · 29/12/2016 21:11

No, you are not alone in that aesthetic response, Annie (I spent ages trying to place him - turns out as a very young man he was in Y tu mama tambien).

I also agree re. TFA. There was a lot I liked about it - came out thinking "that was fantastic", then on reflection thought "but they've just recycled the 'build and destroy a deathstar' plot for the third bloody time" - in retrospect, I think it got an easy ride from the critics because the prequel trilogy was so godamn awful, anything was going to look good by comparison. And Kylo Ren is a terrible baddie - okay until he takes his helmet off, at which point he morphs into "Darth Kevin-the-Teenager" and ceases to be scary at all (in fact becomes bloody irritating).

I thought Rogue One was an all-round better film. The first half was maybe a bit fragmented - too much going on, not enough narrative and character development, felt a bit messy - but the second half, once it gets into its stride and starts heading inexorably for that ending, is very good, and takes it into territory modern films don't often have the guts to go into (and came as a real surprise, coming as it did from Disney!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/12/2016 21:29

I really enjoyed it. It was a bit confusing at first, a lot of scene swapping. I saw it in 3d, which suited the space scenes really well, but not some of the people close ups where the deliberate blurring out of the background was irritating. I thought the final few scenes were really well done.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/12/2016 08:10

I agree re Kylo Ren, he's so under-ripe. We decided he is starting off in spoiled teenager mode like his grandpa and that hopefully he will grow up to be properly scary in future episodes. At the moment it's credible that an untrained young Jedi could take him down if he was a bit careless.

OhYouBadBadKitten, we avoided 3D as DS4 hates it. It was ok in 2D. The scene swapping was confusing but it did all come together to make sense in a little while.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2016 09:07

It'd be interesting to watch it in 2d to see if the backgrounds were blurred out in the same way.

Spadequeen · 30/12/2016 09:12

I absolutely loved it. Wanted to watch episode IV straight away but it was too late.

mintthins · 30/12/2016 09:14

We saw it on Christmas Eve and all really enjoyed it. Some bits were great in 3D but the blurring out of backgrounds and focus shifting were irritating. I said as we were leaving that I was glad that CF was ok because otherwise the final scene would have finished me off. I would certainly be a mess if we went today. Sad

YorkiesGlasses · 30/12/2016 12:47

And Kylo Ren is a terrible baddie - okay until he takes his helmet off, at which point he morphs into "Darth Kevin-the-Teenager" and ceases to be scary at all (in fact becomes bloody irritating).

I think that was supposed to be the point! He's Leia and Han's son, not a two dimensional baddie. I'm pretty sure that the real centre of this trilogy will be his redemption ("Your family are never coming back, but there's someone who still could.") Of course the sad thing is that a planned emotional mother and son reunion might not take place now Sad
