Look Who's Back - a German comedy about Hitler coming back to life in modern day Berlin and coming to terms with the politics of the 21st century.

Yes, a comedy...

I recently watched one called The Greatest. Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan lose their son in a car accident and Carey Mulligan turns up on the doorstep saying she is pregnant with his child. Really moving film and Pierce Brosnan's performance is mesmerising, never knew he was such a good dramatic actor.

Haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if it's already been suggested! Truly Madly Deeply, just beautiful and even more heartbreaking as it stars the late, great Alan Rickman. I am David, watched this with my 11 & 15 year old, absolutely amazing film, if you like life is beautiful you will love it!

Goodbye Lenin
Run Lola Run

Actually loads of German films which really made me stop in my tracks and think. But then I did a German degree so am a big fan of German film and literature.

Not sure about unknown but "I, Daniel Blake" is in cinemas now and it's rather unusual.

The film is about the system (DWP) that takes precious days, weeks, months of people's lives, and gives them nothing in return. Very emotional.

Oh also The Black Book - it's a great film - Dutch I think, though the protagonists switch between speaking Dutch and German, about the underground resistance movement, particularly a Jewish girl who pretends to be a German singer and starts a relationship with a high ranking officer in the National Socialist party to try and gain information and help fellow Jews escape. Brilliant film which I often think about.

iseenodust · 24/10/2016 12:54

Is the Richard Dreyfuss film Whose Life Is It? Was a stage version recently.

alwayshappy101 · 24/10/2016 13:24

Watched "Tallulah" on Netflix recently. Thought it was really good, definitely worth a watch. Ellen Page and Allison Janney great together in it. Ellen Page steals a baby.

Hrafnkel · 24/10/2016 13:44

Lantana - murder mystery.

In the bedroom - a young man is murdered by the ex of his much-older girlfriend. What the family do next.

Both brilliant.

SleepyRoo · 24/10/2016 13:47

The Limey
Terrence Stamp is a cockney gangster in LA seeking revenge for dead daughter, very stylish and cool Steven Soderburgh film

Chances Are
Hilarious 80s rom com with back-from-the-dead plot, starring Robert Downey Jr and Cybill Shepherd and Ryan O'Neill - triple swoon. I believe it may even have a Cher theme song

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 24/10/2016 13:51

Sleepy is that the one where a woman pretends she can't speak English in a car with Terence Stamp and he looks in the rear view mirror & says something like "you've got shit on your hair" and she puts her hand to her head and gives it away?

n0ne · 24/10/2016 14:14

Ghost Dog is brilliant too! Forrest Whitaker plays a modern-day Samurai (think Wu Tang) who takes revenge on washed-up remnants of aging mafia. Makes me cry every time.

In America - poor Irish family try to make a life for themselves in New York. Another tear-jerker with scintillating performances from Samantha Morton, Paddy Considine and Djimon Hounsou

Somanyshoes · 24/10/2016 14:23

Paul!
It's a comedy with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Kristen Wiig about a drinking, spliff smoking alien who has escaped from Area 51. It's really funny, well I think so and is now down as one of my favourite films, along with Stepbrothers Grin

alwayshappy101 · 24/10/2016 14:24

Sleepyroo

I love chances are too.

I am honestly not sure if it is well known but I love What About Bob? It is a film starring Bill Murray (love him!) and Richard Dreyfuss. Bill plays a patient who tracks down his psychotherapist when he is on holiday. It is very funny.

SleepyRoo · 24/10/2016 18:19

Lemonpledge don't remember that scene. It's Stamp in his Autumn years i.e. Was made around '98

FancyPantsDelacroixTheFirst · 24/10/2016 18:27

Restless Natives, 1980's comedy about two poor lads in Edinburgh who hold up buses.

The soundtrack is by Big Country, who were one of my favorite bands of the time [misty nostalgia].

daydreamnation · 24/10/2016 18:29

Anyone else love Rita, Sue and Bob too? Grin

NuggetofPurestGreen · 24/10/2016 18:46

Yes daydream 'I can't help being a Paki' 'oh yes you fuckin can'

n0ne · 24/10/2016 21:19

sparechange - just watched End of Watch on your recommendation. Great film!!! Thanks!

powershowerforanhour · 24/10/2016 21:20

Nugget your comment reminded me of Four Lions....another good one (dark comedy about homegrown terrorists)

sparechange · 24/10/2016 21:22

It's brilliant, isn't it. Proper hairs on the back of the neck stuff

I can't understand why it isn't better known...

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 24/10/2016 21:27

Shattered Glass. An absolutely spellbinding film...you can't see it and not love it!! It is the true story of the downfall of Stephen Glass, the hotshot young journalist at the respected magazine, The New Republic. Only problem is - all his 'factual' stories are complete fiction!!! It really is outstanding....SO gripping!
