Just finished watching Philomena. Bawling. DH looking at me funny.

I wish I hadn't watched it at all, because now I am sad, and angry at the injustice of it all.

Felt similar after watching The Help.

Any one else get like this?

Hostel and Wolf Creek, just utterly horrible.

Blue Valentine was bloody depressing!

And Still Alice was a great film, but just highlighted how sad Alzheimer's is and there really is nothing you can do to stop it or help.

'Revolutionary Road'

I had miscarried 3 times by the time I saw this film and was feeling pretty hopeless. The breakdown of the main characters' relationship and her effort to induce an abortion made for a heartbreaking story. The music haunts me to this day. If I'm not mistaken Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes broke up not too long after making this movie.

'21 Grams'

I saw this movie after I lost my DS. Naomi Watts was in destructive mode as a grieving mother and crossed paths with Sean Penn in this disturbing film about the loss of a child. Truly brilliant, truly depressing.

The Omen gave me nightmares for years, hated seeing a pane of glass not surrounded by a frame.!
Threads terrifying and led to long discussion with dh about what we'd do if there was an attack. We both agreed we'd get as close as we could and hopefully die in the initial blast. Lovely bones but the book is more depressing and thought provoking. No Country For Old Men

mewkins · 09/10/2015 22:16

That Bjork film Dancer in the Dark. And hideous Black Swan still haunts me and I didn't even see the ending.

EponasWildDaughter · 09/10/2015 22:19

The only film i've actually turned off was Hellraiser 2. Near the beginning where the mad man on the mattress is handed a razer blade ...

I not only turned it off but marched out with the film and put it in the bin. I didn't even want it in the house!

I'd just had DD2 and was very hormonal.

wigglesrock · 09/10/2015 22:20

Martin....... It can be awful sometimes watching a film that can resonate with a part of your life that's been so very sad. I found Revolutionary Road a very very sad film.

Blue Valentine on the other hand I really enjoyed, I didn't find it depressing, well it wasn't a barrel of laughs but I was transfixed by both if them in it. I think it was easily both of their best performances to date.

Arcadia · 09/10/2015 22:24

Man bites dog. The sickest film I ever saw, taken by abusive boyfriend at uni. He enjoyed exposing me to shocking things. A spoof documentary following a Belgian serial killer, a horrific rape scene I recall. I actually can't watch anything 'harder' than a 12 now, glad to have excuse to see kids films with DD!

Mrsjayy · 09/10/2015 22:25

The film(cant remember what it is called) with hilary swank where she is transgender is really sad i caught it a bit of the way in was really sad.

fromheretomaternity · 09/10/2015 22:26

Not a movie but a TV series - Fortitude. Lovely scenery but so gruesome and bleak. Never watched the final episode as the penultimate one had such a repellent last scene. Regret watching that.

OhBigHairyBollocks · 09/10/2015 22:29

Oh God Road to Terabithia had me in tears for hours

colouringinagain · 09/10/2015 22:33

I've seen a lot of the harrowing films mentioned (pianist, boy in striped pj etc).

But Seven is the only one that still disturbs me over a decade later. The planning and execution of the punishments remains the most evil thing I've seen on the screen, and I don't use that word lightly! Came out of the cinema completely shell-stocked and in need of several stiff drinks Confused Shock

CoffeeAndOranges · 09/10/2015 22:36

Monster's Ball. Met up with a friend I hadn't seen for ages, we randomly went to see it. I have never spent a more miserable couple of hours in a cinema.

The Break Up. Again, total misery fest. Both characters intensely unlikeable. Just hard work to watch.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 09/10/2015 22:37

Didn't find Hostel or Saw films scary. Just gory. They weren't really good creepy tales. Agree Threads is fucking hideous. As The Day After. Threads is much scarier though.

MarjorySunshineDust · 09/10/2015 22:40

Eden Lake was horrendous.

LollipopViolet · 09/10/2015 22:46

The Fault in Our Stars. I lost my granddad to cancer just over 2 years ago.

I was a complete and utter WRECK at the end! It made me realise I can't watch anything to do with cancer at the moment, it hits too much of a nerve.

Also Kill Bill (had to ask to be excused from watching that in A Level Media Studies after the first 20 minutes left me having a very broken night's sleep that night. Tutors were lovely about it though.

Also Requiem for a Dream.

CocktailQueen · 09/10/2015 22:46

Seven. Absolutely horrible.
Falling Down. Made me cry for ages.
Cape Fear. Terrifying - the way Robert de Niro hid under the van. Gah'

NickiFury · 09/10/2015 22:47

Leaving Las Vegas. I felt utterly hopeless after watching that film. I wasn't in a good place anyway which didn't help. Utterly miserable two hours.

LilaTheTiger · 09/10/2015 22:56

The Bridge to Terabrithia.

Was about 5 years ago DD and I curled up for a lovely afternoon Disney film. Both complete snotty sobbing shaking messes by the end of it.
When anyone talks about heart breaking films we just turn to each other with that haunted look.
It genuinely left me all wobbly about the fragility of children's lives Sad

TrionicLettuce · 09/10/2015 23:05

The Plague Dogs.

I don't know why a) DH and I decided it was a good idea to watch it, b) why we didn't turn it off when it became clear it was utterly harrowing, and c) who the fuck decided to make it into a film in the first place.

There's very few films I genuinely regret watching but that's definitely at the top of the list.

Muckogy · 09/10/2015 23:16

oh jesus - deliverance. i nearly passed out at the male rape scene.

jacob's ladder - utterly horrendous.

Manga's legend of the demon womb - truly obscene.

refuse to watch the Human Centipede.

macnab · 09/10/2015 23:17

The Road. I read the book (Cormac McCarthy) and although it's beautifully written and gripping, the ending is heartbreaking. I was kind of hoping the film version would have a happier ending. It doesn't Hmm

I didn't know there was a film made of "Never let me go". I hated that book, am almost glad to hear the film is crappy too!

CheerfulYank · 09/10/2015 23:17

I actually think k Winter's Bone is hopeful. That girl is so tough, I just felt she'd be okay.

I saw Seven when I was 12 or 13 and was really depressed for a few weeks.

I don't watch anything sad that's based on a true story so Philomena is out already!

Samcro · 09/10/2015 23:20

Johnnie get his gun
why did we watch that, omg in all my many days I have never been so affected by a film, and I love Metalica but can't watch the vid to One because of it

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 09/10/2015 23:24

I try to avoid sad/scary movies but sometimes I get tricked by films that I think are going to a happy. Saving Mr Banks and Paddington are two recent examples - brutal!!
