Kid friendly movies you actually enjoy watching?

DS is almost 8 and I'm looking for some films that are appropriate for him but not mind numbing. He has a two year old sister and a newborn brother and has to be the "big helper" a lot of the time, so when we can watch something together and it's just his time it's really nice.

We both loved all the Harry Potters and I recently showed him the Princess Bride, which he was reluctant about because of its "girly" title Hmm, but he really liked. He liked the Sound of Music, too. And we watched Thor. I found myself bored with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which is sad as I loved it as a kid.

Obviously if he really wants to watch something with me I will do it whether I like it or not, but it's much more fun when we're both really interested and engaged in it. So, any suggestions?

Cannonball Run
Home Alone
Shrek
Chicken Run
Anything animated actually

I personally love old films too - so anything with a young hayley mills, ealing comedies or musicals.

Megamind is utterly hilarious and very very overlooked. The Percy Jackson films are thrilling and action packed. My two like "end of the world" type films like The Day after Tomorrow.

Also echo The Goonies, ET, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jumanji (although my two get scared by this more than other films!)

  • Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
  • Jumanji
  • Hook
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • Toy Story
  • Despicable Me
wishiwasacollie · 22/05/2017 18:18

We all loved the tintin film...despicable me and an old one with danny kaye the jester i think. Back to oz was funny too

rookiemere · 22/05/2017 18:18

Same as some others.
I loved the Wimpy kid films and even though I've seen them a few times now, there's always something new to enjoy. First Despicable Me was excellent as are all the Toy Stories.
Wreck it Ralph and Big Hero 6 are both excellent and Big has always struck me as more of an adult than kids movie.

Now DS is 11 the task of finding something we all enjoy is even harder.
Recent hits have been

  • Hunt for the wilderpeople - this does have some quite adulty bits so not recommended for the under 10s
  • Now you see me 1 & 2- he loves magic
  • Big and ET

Wreck It Ralph
The Incredibles
Wizard of oz
Howls moving castle
Mary Poppins
All these movies are pretty awesome. Now you can watch all these movies for free on CRowns Lite app. You can get it from crownslite.net/ .

Any of the marvel universe films. The most recent Star Wars movies are good I think the originals are amazing but a little hard to follow for younger kids. Jurassic park/world films are great. The labyrinth might go down well or Willow though I suppose it can be a little scary in places.
