Kid friendly movies you actually enjoy watching?

DS is almost 8 and I'm looking for some films that are appropriate for him but not mind numbing. He has a two year old sister and a newborn brother and has to be the "big helper" a lot of the time, so when we can watch something together and it's just his time it's really nice.

We both loved all the Harry Potters and I recently showed him the Princess Bride, which he was reluctant about because of its "girly" title Hmm, but he really liked. He liked the Sound of Music, too. And we watched Thor. I found myself bored with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which is sad as I loved it as a kid.

Obviously if he really wants to watch something with me I will do it whether I like it or not, but it's much more fun when we're both really interested and engaged in it. So, any suggestions?

I was reminded of this one on the school run this morning when the older teens started raving about it as 'Walking on Sunshine' by Katrina and the Waves came on the radio.

Daddy Day Care

We're going to find our old copy and watch it this weekend.

springlamb · 08/07/2015 10:13

Mine also loved Father of the Bride (but NOT Parenthood please).

Boosiehs · 08/07/2015 10:16

ALittleFaith · 08/07/2015 10:22

The Beethoven films? There is attempt at assault in one of them, maybe the second film? So maybe not that!

QueenFuri · 08/07/2015 10:28

Yes to Diary of a Wimpy Kid I really like those I read the latest book the other week and laughed a lot.
The first 2 Beethoven's the rest are crap.

Home Alone 1 & 2
Malificent
The Book of Life
Pirates of the Carribean (although maybe when the two year old isn't there)
Marmaduke
Marley and Me
Night at the Museum (any of them)

maitaimojito · 08/07/2015 10:35

My brother loved the Indiana Jones films at that age.

Also could consider:
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
Jurassic Park
Back to the Future
The Land Before Time
Up
The Witches

ASettlerOfCatan · 08/07/2015 10:37

I found 8 is a pretty good age for movies as they take in more. Princess Bride is an amazing choice. Also for mine:
The Goonies
Jumanji (my 8yo declared this the best movie ever lol)
Big
Labyrinth

and if they are not squeemish/sensitive you can go for
Ghostbusters
Jurassic Park
Possibly also Back to The Future (although it can be hard for 8 yo to follow)

Animation stuff I've loved as well as the kids:
Anything Pixar
Despicable Me 1 & 2
How to Train Your Dragon 1 & 2 (there are TV series as well cheap on DVD/on Netflix) Be warned on httyd 2 though there are sad bits which had my kids in tears on the first watch!

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2015 10:44

I second

Back to the Future
All the Wimpy kid films are great.

Is Ferris Buellers Day Off too grown up?

chrome100 · 08/07/2015 12:11

Oh yes, the Wolves of Willougby Chase! I'd love to see that again.

Bit trashy, but last xmas High School Musical was on and I was stuck to the sofa in a food coma so watched it and secretly rather enjoyed it. It might be a tad girly though.

MadAsgardian · 08/07/2015 12:16

Sorry if I duplicate previous suggestions - our whole family love:

All marvel films - may need to check the age ratings
National Treasure
Jumaji and Zathura
Narnia - there are 3 I think?

My brain has gone blank - we watch a film as a family most Fridays - will ask the DCs.

dustarr73 · 08/07/2015 12:23
