A 'scary' film for a 10yr old boy?

My DS is having a sleepover for his birthday and has asked to watch a 'scary' film. Any suggestions? The other kids are all pretty tough so not worried too much about tears at bed time but don't want to damage kids for life either. I will obviously check with other parents too. TIA for any suggestions.

Gremlins? It's a 15 but it wouldn't be a 15 today. Not too scary but the rating might up it's "cool" value?

Chillyegg · 13/12/2014 12:25

The mummy ? It's quite old though....what about a Tim burton movie? His Halloween carton movies are quite scary?

Chillyegg · 13/12/2014 12:25

Cartoon not carton

Probably not the best person to advise as my 10yo gets scared easily at disney films!

I agree the later Harry potter films are scary but not easy to watch if you've not watched the previous ones.

Need for speed is a great film for boys this age if they love cars and stunts. It's not 'scary' as such but is a high adrenaline film. It's a 12 but was a 12A in cinema.

Maybe you could ask each parent to get their child to bring a film they find enjoyable/scary/thrilling etc

mumnosbest · 13/12/2014 15:41

thanks, some good suggestions. I thought maybe gremlins or ghostbusters and will have a film night with DH to review the others. I know the other mums well enough to ask so no worries there. Harry Potter's great but think DS knows them word for word lol

Woman in black terrified me and I'm 24!

itsbetterthanabox · 13/12/2014 16:00

The others is a 12 I think. It's creepy but not violent.
Would they watch old films? Maybe a hammer horror like Dracula or Frankenstein?

bruffin · 14/12/2014 15:38

Something Wicked This Way Comes
an old film (if you can call an 80s film old ) but very scary at the time.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 08/01/2015 17:39

How bizarre, Bruffin, that was what I was coming to suggest.

geebie · 08/01/2015 17:45

If you watched Ghostbusters with them they could make the slime (ectoplasm??!) from the film! Lots of slime recipes on places like Pintrest, Imagination Tree etc

I have a 9yo DS

Monster House

or Frankenweenie

are scary enough for him.

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 08/01/2015 18:16

Nightmare before Christmas!!!!

splodgeses · 10/01/2015 22:04

Uhm, I don't know if they are 'scary' as such, but all suitable for kids and have the thrilling action that most boys love!

Jumangi
Hocus Pocus
Spiderwick Chronicles
Journey to the Center of Earth

There's a Percy Jackson film its got some scary (ish) scenes?

HettyD · 10/01/2015 22:20

How about Lost Boys??

Monstamio · 10/01/2015 22:25

Not The Woman in Black... It's bloody terrifying!

Not sure I've got any great suggestions though... Gremlins, ghostbusters, beetlejuice are all ancient now aren't they?!

Monstamio · 10/01/2015 22:26

Sorry, just realised you'd already thought of them anyway!

Monstamio · 10/01/2015 22:29

What about The Sixth Sense?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/01/2015 22:32

What about The Addams Family?

Bluegill · 10/01/2015 22:32

Monster house is perfect in my opinion. Such a great movie and very scary in an age appropriate way.

wickedlazy · 10/01/2015 22:33

I second the lost boys.

mysteryfairy · 10/01/2015 23:35

Wasn't the sixth sense a 15? I would have been Shock if one of mine had been shown that at a 10th birthday party.

I took 12 year old DD to see The Maze Runner last year and she was gripped. Not sure if it's really obscure but is never heard of it before we randomly saw it. I think that would be a good one as nothing in it to make anyone really panic though more a thriller than a scary movie.
