Please, please, please see this film.
It lays it all out in front of you in a way that really does make you stoip and think.
I saw it last night and urge you to make the effort to get to see it it and get others to as well.

See it, think about it, and do something. Please.

winnie · 21/09/2006 12:48

thomcat, I am going to see this film too but call me a cynic I often these things preach to the converted

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:05

I thought Al Gore came across really well.
Better him than Vush any day of the week.

Buy the DVD when it comes out, show it to your children.

I will see it - have seen the trailer for it on TV but...every time I see the disclaimer at the end of the trailer it makes me giggle...it's something like "Warning: Contains Graphic Scenes of Global Disasters" No sh!t, Sherlock

Gobbledigook · 21/09/2006 13:27

I'm not sure my kids will sit through that. We'll stick to 'Over the Hedge' thanks.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:28

Does it, oh how funny!

There was a thing on This Morning this week showing a carton of milk that said 'Warning contains milk'! And did you know Crunch NUT Cornflakes contain nuts!!

Anyway - see the film, but be warned!

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:30

Gobbledigook - Perhaps you could watch it yourself and show it to your children when they are old enough to understand the impact they have on their world so it's still here for their children?

Gobbledigook · 21/09/2006 13:33

Hmmm, if I was lucky enough to get a babysitter so I could have an evening out it would be way down on my list of things to do. I probably won't see it.

That's not to say I don't try to 'do my bit' wrt to the environment, but this just isn't a film I'm going to go and see. It's not my sort of film.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:43

It's not my sort of usual film either G - but it's my planet and nothing has ever made me sit up and think about it as much as this film has. There's no point in watching a film like that, being made to feel something, then coming home and keepingit to myself and just not overfilling the kettle for a week.

My friend felt so strongly that the film gets seen she paid for about 20 of us to go to The Electric to see it. At £12.50 a seat that was quite something and people who might not have seen the film got up and went to see it and I'm so glad she did that and so glad i've seen it. If she hadn't handed it to me on aplate I might not have bothered and it is a film that needs to be seen imo.

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 13:44

the thing is though, we can't do anything about it can we

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:45

What???

We can't do anything about saving the planet?

Are you joking?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 13:46

well obviously we can in little ways, but not in a big way

Marina · 21/09/2006 13:49

Think globally, act locally seastra . If we all do something small, it DOES make a difference.
I do think Al Gore looks like a talking sea cucumber, but good for him for making this film. Will see it myself and maybe recommend it for next term's topic at ds' school, Weather.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:50

oh fuck it then, just crck on, no point bothering.

YOU really need to watch this film with that sort of attitude.

Recycle waste paper

Use a biro from start to finish

Start a car pool

Enjoy a Fairtrade brew

Pull the plug on mobile phone chargers

Recycle your printer cartridges

Shut down your computer properly

Photocopy on both sides

Challenge your business about its ?lights on at night? policy if they have one

?Aspire not to have more, but to be more.? 201

Avoid waste

Earn fewer air miles 100

Spread the word 162

Don't leave the tap on when you / your kids brush their teeth

Turn off the TV at night don't keep it on standby

Don't overfill the kettle

JUST A FEW IDEAS TO START WITH

OP posts:
Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:51

That would be a great idea Marina. I think this film should definitley be seen by school kids, in fact in should be complusory.

OP posts:
Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:53

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 13:54

but will it make a difference? i'm not saying i don't do anything like the above, but surely the problem is bigger than us anyway! i'm 37 so am well aware of the state of the world btw

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 13:55

so being able to afford to buy fair trade will stop that will it?

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:56

Can you not see that if everyone does something small to help a bit towards the bigger picture that's what matters.

No, buying fairtrade won't save the planet, but it makes it a nicer place to live in.

Jeez louise.

Marina · 21/09/2006 13:58

I think so seastra We accelerated a natural, very slow rise in temperature after the cool "mini-ice-age" of the middle ages in Europe, by having the Industrial Revolution and burning fossil fuels. By cutting household and commercial energy consumption as much as possible we can slow down this trend. With the film fresh in her mind I think TC may have gone a bit Cassandra on us there , but the list of suggestions is really worth following, especially if you haven't done any of them in your household yet.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 13:59

Thank you Marina
