Please, please, please see this film.
It lays it all out in front of you in a way that really does make you stoip and think.
I saw it last night and urge you to make the effort to get to see it it and get others to as well.

See it, think about it, and do something. Please.

An Inconvenient Truth

anyway i haven't travelled on a plane since 1988 and you have no clue what i do locally either before you jump to conculsions that i just comsume and dont give a monkeys about any of it.

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:01

if i live to be 55, i'm going to start smoking again. hopefully that will shorten my life b/c i HATE heat and global warming is already a misery.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:06

You can do something in the UK:

Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb
CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer
Almost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.

Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases

Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket

Use less hot water

Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible

Turn off electronic devices you?re not using

Unplug electronics from the wall when you?re not using them
Even when turned off, things like hairdryers, cell phone chargers and televisions use energy.

Only run your dishwasher when there?s a full load

Recycle at home and at work

Buy recycled paper products

Plant a tree - A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Buy locally grown and produced foods

Buy fresh foods instead of frozen
Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce.

Seek out and support local farmers markets
They reduce the amount of energy required to grow and transport the food to you.

Buy organic foods as much as possible

Avoid heavily packaged products

Eat less meat

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:09

well i do all of those, apart from buying organic and certainly don't have a dishwasher. i'm just saying that i personally do not think it will make any difference if we're that doomed anyway

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:10

Where have I jumped to conclusions about what you consume?

How can me trying to highlight ways we, inc me, can help our planet turn into you getting uppity with me and saying that anyone is drawing conclusions about what you consume.

Jesus, can't a girl urge other mothers to see what she considers an important film and list ways we can all do something without it turning into a ruck?

I'm far too wasteful, I need to do a lot more than I'm doing and seeing this film has made me realise that. this is my way of making a start in helping to make a difference.

So shoot me for giving a shit!

Happy days aye.

But we still need to try, need to think don't we, doomed or not? Can't we all just try and slow it down a bit at least maybe? Doesn't caring about our planet and our kids future, and doing something about it, doesn't that make us feel better about ourselves?
I think it will me.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:13

well if you're wasteful then you need to change, people have known about these things for years it's not a new thing.

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:14

i think we're doomed, too. the only thing that can save us would be a massive explosion and realised a lot of sulphur and such into the air or otherwise we're going to burn up.

seriously, i'm starting to think, 'why not just smoke and drink?'

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:14

i'm just biding my time till my kids are adults.

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:15

sorry, that's 'released'.

Gobbledigook · 21/09/2006 14:15

Go for it expat!

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:16

Oh believe you me, GDG, I will!

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:17

ohhhh you're coming across as a bit unpleasant towards me southeastra.

I'm saying I need to do something, absolutley I do. I totally realise that and have said that.

I know it's not a new thing, thanks for pointing that out, but I'm all fired up from last nights film and this was one of the things I decided to do as a positive step, as well as doing my best to make changes in home life.

You seem quite hostile towards me for trying to do that and I'm not sure why.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:17

I'm deffo gonna watch the Roman Empire show on BBC tonight, about Nero .

expatinscotland · 21/09/2006 14:18

I think what south is about is that, even though we may chose to do these things, the vast majority of the world's population either won't or can't.

And a drop in hte ocean is just that, unfortunately.

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:19

maybe the phrase YOU really need to watch this film with that sort of attitude.

jeez louise.

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:19

oh!
I really didn't expect such a negative reaction to this thread.

I really wanted to tell you about this film. It's nothing I didn't know before but it really rammed it home and made me sit up and think shit - do something, spread the word and make changes in your life.

Beginning to wish I hadn't bothered

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:20

look i'm not hostile at all, i'm all for it really i am, i suppose i'm just very cynical about the whole subject. really no offence to you

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:21

Yes, but only because you said :

the thing is though, we can't do anything about it can we

and not knowing you, with that post it seemed like you were the perfect audience for the film.

OP posts:
Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:24

ok, well I'm glad you're not being hostile and from your other posts since the first one, yes you absolutley do give a shit.

Just feel quite sad that my feeling so fired up and positive and wanting to start doing my bit has left me feeling so deflated. Sometimes Mumsnet is shit like that.

I won't bother doing my bit on here, I'm off to boil the kettle but will only fill it up to cover the 1 cup of tea, something I wouldn't have doen before tbh with you, so............

OP posts:
southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:24

ok i'm going to plant a tree now

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:27

i do feel a bit bad though for ruining your thread sorry thomcat

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 14:30

although starting another thread seems weird, do you want everyone else to just agree with you?

Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:31

That's ok, just glad we haven't fallen out, I hate that sort of thing.

i do feel quite gutted though.

I'm not super intelligent, i'm not an expert in this field, I'm just little me and last nights film really hit home and I just wanted to try and do something very small and maybe make just one other person feel like I felt.

I wasn't prepared for the reactions I got that's all, will know better next time and stick to the special needs section and threads about 'what's for dinner'.

OP posts:
Thomcat · 21/09/2006 14:33

No southeastastra I don't. I thought I'd take it from movie reviews when i realised there was a topic esp for the environment. Thought it would be better to pint it out there to people who probably already care about the subject but may not know about the film.

Is that so bad of me then?
Seemed sensible to me.
