To think that the makers of The Lego Movie got it all wrong?

As I sit here surrounded by a ton of bits of Lego, hunting for that elusive microscopic piece that DS2 has to have to complete his Lego scene, I can't help thinking that there is something inherently wrong about the storyline.

In the story the Dad has a huge Lego collection, and cruelly insists that it all stays intact, denying his son the pure joy of building and breaking and rebuilding random Lego creations. In reality I don't care if they break all their carefully constructed spaces ships, fire engines, police cars etc into prices, if it makes them happy. But the problem is that then they're upset when it's in pieces, and I have to hunt high and low for the relevant teeny tiny pieces and try to reassemble it all.

And as for glue being the enemy - on the contrary - after trashing their police station and fire station the kids have asked me to glue it together! Superglue is my friend!

Ohhhh. Lego city here. So much Lego. All over the place. DS loves Lego. It's all he really loves on the toy front. Loves following the instructions, loves playing with it, loves mashing it up and making something else with it (after a couple of weeks). We've kept all the instructions, sadly not the boxes as not enough space.
DS would never agree to super-gluing it together! Nor would I. Though I quite see the point of that! But then where would it all be stored? Easier to store broken up in boxes.
I liked the Lego movie, liked the twist at the end. DS obviously LOVED it. But have you seen the preview of the Lego Simpsons episode.... fantastic!

the sets can't be made into anything else ???? Confused

Icanseethesun- whatever do you mean?

redfocus were you there for May the Fourth? Envy

SvenandSven · 06/05/2014 00:25

My ds has asd and loves lego and would only ever build as the instructions said it could never be done any other way. After seeing the movie he is now building his own things, so for us it's a huge thumbs up to the film.

BankWadger · 06/05/2014 04:11

I had lego induced rage today. But happily the kids bedroom is properly tidy (for 5 seconds) and I sorted out a pile of no longer needed baby toys to donate and sell.

Everything is NOT awesome when your 'D'S doesn't listen and tips the bucket of lego off and under the bed, but finding Neil's head and having space to create is awesome.

FanFuckingTastic · 06/05/2014 04:15

I had loads of fun with lego as a kid, we never had sets, we just got given a load of lego in a tub from a friend who had outgrown it, so we made our own stuff. We could spend hours doing it.

We loved the film and have adopted the song to suit us. Mummy is so awesome is my favourite rendition. And I sing it back to them in return for recognising my awesomeness.

Jollyphonics · 06/05/2014 06:47

I had loads of Lego as a kid too, and it was a huge shock to me when I started buying it for the DCs to discover that these days it's virtually all sets. It seems to defeat the object. I would have thought that if kids wants something that doesnt fall apart, they'd be better off with a straight model. But apparently not. They love Lego more. Maybe it's the element of risk they like, wondering if it will break or not!

How can anyone complain that you can't buy the double decker couch except in the ££££ SeaCow set. It's a couch FFS. The whole point is that it is a trivially easy building challenge either using the official design from the website or your own variant.

I'm hankering after UniKitty - now that you really do needs to buy.

BeeInYourBonnet · 06/05/2014 07:07

I love the film. I am exactly like the Dad, and it drives me mad when the DCs break a perfectly crafted masterpiece. But I have a word with myself! And love seeing them create new things Smile

Icanseethesun I think you may be missing the point of Lego!

leeloo1 · 06/05/2014 08:50

Lego movie couch £20 incl. p&p. :)

If you have enough bits you could probably replicate it - we could have a try but it wouldn't be exactly the same - which some kids want...

leeloo1 · 06/05/2014 08:56

Our Lego castle (if my 1st photo upload works)- please note hexagonal tower (which Dh said couldn't be done!) - made using offset 2x2s as 'hinges'; 'dungeon', artists studio, picnic on terrace & Wonderwoman in helicopter Grin

We have a lot of Lego. I'm a fan except for the superhero kits (of which ds has many) as they really are too specialised to be made into much else I think...

I didn't get to see the movie, but ds was indspired to make his own models to try & replicate the film, so all good. :)

Has anyone noticed that the tune to "Everything is awesome" is pretty much identical to "I'm fucking Matt Damon"? #inappropriateearworm

differentnameforthis · 06/05/2014 13:15

Lego movie has a double decker couch, there is only 1 set that has it which cost £160

Lots of Lego dd couches on ebay, nowhere nr 160 pounds

elfycat · 06/05/2014 13:31

We're about to get into lego (DD1 is 5). She's been showing interest and a trip to legoland probably features in my future.

WTF is with the pink lego (friends)? She's just started gender identifying colours (thanks school or school friends) as it is.

No way is she having any of that. Maybe she'd like to go straight to meccano? DO they do 'pink' meccano?

MrsCakesPremonition · 06/05/2014 13:36

Steer clear of the pink lego - just get your DD a box of assorted pieces and start building.

Do not go near the shop at Legoland - it is overwhelmingly oriented to expensive, hard-to-build models aimed at boys, very little "classic" lego. My DD was hugely disappointed.

rattling · 06/05/2014 14:55

DS came home and instantly made a double decker couch out of 2 flat pieces and about 20 2x4 blocks. It looks nothing like the movies, but that is what it is. Aquaman is sitting on it with Lex Luthor (in disguise - he has a wig on) this morning.

DS and I love lego.

BankWadger · 06/05/2014 22:18

Amazon is good for the boxes of random blocks. All the shops round here that sell lego tend to only sell the sets. I don't mind buying the really small sets, but got DS a big box of blocks because he loves making his own things. (He was making a beach tram, so bought him a very small set with a surfer with surfboard, a shark and a coast guard with a jet ski, now spiderman goes surfing while all the other guys hang out on a train. Well they did yesterday until legogeddon happened).

Icanseethesun
You can download and print all the recent lego models from their website if you scroll down to page 23 it gives you the instructions for the double decker couch.

DIYtrainee · 07/05/2014 10:18

Lots and lots of little boxes, then you sort them into 'types' of lego and then you can find what you need when you pull out one of the dozens of books you have and build anything you want.

Well that's the theory - the reality is that slowly the contents of the small boxes gradually reduce and the 'general' box gets too full and I look mournfully at it wondering where all my hard work has gone.....

Sad case, me......

Hello we’re sweeping this thread into our Movies topic, but OP if you’re not happy please do let us know

biffchas · 30/01/2015 13:59

I never thought of gluing Lego until I saw the film. There must be some sort of soluble glue that is a half way house. (eyes left over weetabix)
