50 Films in 2014 - Anyone care to join?

I am on the 50 books in 2014 thread but I have also set myself the target of watching 50 films in 2014.
It works out to just less than one a week. It should be easy!
I haven't really set any hard and fast rules for myself, except that they should be films I haven't seen before. They don't need to be new releases or watched at the cinema or anything.
Oh, and I have to watch them all the way through! No falling asleep halfway through and waking up when the credits roll. Blush
Does anyone care to join me keeping track and sharing reviews and recommendation like we do on the book thread?

We love tangled too. It's one of the least sexist of the Disney films we've seen. We've got the toy story trilogy to watch this week.

  1. West is West. It was on the tv last night and I've never seen it. I enjoyed it.
TOADfan · 27/01/2014 00:40

I have watched this week:

Confessions of a teenage drama queen Blush
A Belfast Story
Wolf of Wall Street. Highly recommend it, unexpectedly good.

AntiJamDidi · 27/01/2014 07:26
  1. Tinkerbell and the secret of the wings Blush
Dd2 chose this one and it's not as annoying as I thought.

  1. Dr Strangelove.

Very much of its time. I can see why it had the effect it did in the 60s/70s but not so much now I don't think. Peter Sellers freaks me out a bit as well. So not something I will feel the need to see again!!

I thought about starting a thread like this Grin
Last year I watched loads in January and trailed off after that.
Taking out films I've already seen, so far 2014, I have watched:

  1. The Five_Year Engagement
  2. Last Vegas
  3. What To Expect When You're Expecting
  4. 12 Years A Slave
AntiJamDidi · 02/02/2014 17:29
  1. Toy story 3 - another of dd2's choices. We watched all 3 toy story films but I've seen the other 2 before so I'm not counting them. The third one is rather darker than the other 2, with bad toys in the daycare.
  1. John Tucker Must Die - dd1's choice this time. Utter drivel, but it sucked me in and I watched the full thing rather than turning it off.
  1. Tinkerbell and the lost treasure - yet another of dd2's choices from the library. I am sensing a theme in my film viewing this year, I wonder how many Disney films I can possibly watch that I haven't already seen.

  1. The Host. Not as good as the book, which I really loved. But I enjoyed watching and had low expectations to be honest!
  2. The History Boys. Which was brilliant! Can't believe I'd never seen it. Amazing how many actors were in it when they were young (James Corden, Dominic Cooper etc)
I've got Gran Tourismo to watch this week Smile

Is the Host based on the Stephanie Meyer book, Redbush? I like the book, but I almost always prefer a book to a film.

  1. The Perks of being a Wallflower.

With Emma Watson from Harry Potter. She plays an American, really well I might add. It's a coming of age film, quite a lot darker than I expected, but I did enjoy it.

Am film mad... Seen "inside llewyn davies" - it killed a few hours in a rainy sunday afternoon, "wolf of wall street" loooads of nudity/drugs, quite entertaining but a tad long at 3 hours.. "12 years" good/bit long.. "August osage county" like watching a relentless family argument... "Mandela" very good... Cant wait for "book thief" and "dallas buyers club"

RedBushedT · 05/02/2014 17:45

CardiffUni Yes, it's based on the book and considering how tricky that story must have been to film, it's not bad! The book is definitely better though. I really loved the book Smile

RedBushedT · 05/02/2014 17:46

Singapore, I am very excited about the Book Thief film, although I'm apprehensive about how on earth that can live up to the book!

Absy · 05/02/2014 17:52
  1. Mandela - good, I thought the person playing Winnie was amazing. there was one continuity error - when Mandela gets out of jail and goes back to living in Soweto, there's a kid wearing a t shirt with the new south African flag on it. That flag didn't exist until 1994 (I remember it being announced a few days before the elections). Shoddy. I was also annoyed that freaking Bono did the theme song. He's all over anything Mandela like stink on a monkey
  2. 12 Years - amazing, but depressing.
  3. Wolf of Wall Street - I enjoyed it, but yeah, all the sex and drugs got a bit much but made sense in the context of the film
  4. Mulholland Drive - meh
  5. American Beauty
singaporefling · 05/02/2014 18:04

Yes redbush the book was amazing, v v sobworthy IMO... Ooo just remembered one of my favourite films. "Argo" brilliant...

DavidHarewoodsFloozy · 05/02/2014 18:29

So far I,ve seen

12 years a Slave, hard to watch in places, amazing performance from Michael Fassbender, feel plaudits of "best film ever made" a bit OTT.

The Dallas Buyers Club, superlative, can,t rave. about this enough, I really hope Matthew Mc gets the Oscar, amazing story.

The Butler, mmm ok, I love Forrest W. But not the best performance I,ve seen from him. Very interesting if you have older kids who want to know about the American civil rights movement, in an "easy" context.

August:Ossage County OMG brilliant, brilliant brilliant,
(Warning, may be a trigger for those with narcs in the family). Stand out performance from Meryl S, Oscar surely, Julia Roberts great, Benedict C, never got him before, fabulous actor. Please watch.

Wolf of Wall St, can,t say. enough good things about this. Stand out acting( very sexually graphic) laugh out funny and beautiful cinematography from Scorcese, bright colours. You may have to put your feminist principles to the side for the night, it depicts very sexist attitudes.

I rBlue Jasmine ( woody allen aside) whats not to love, Cate B gives a perfect performance ( so beautiful) . Loved it.

I really want to watch Nebraska, Philomena, Gravity, and American Hustle.

singaporefling · 05/02/2014 19:24

Nebraska seemed to be same ilk as 'inside llewyn davies', gravity was amazing, philomena poignant/well-crafted, american hustle captured the zeitgeist and perfectly evoked an era/ethos...

DavidHarewoodsFloozy · 05/02/2014 20:39

Ooh Sing, thankyou, I,m not much of a Sandra B fan but have heard good thinks about Gravity.

I can,t wait for the Oscars!

singaporefling · 05/02/2014 21:53

Yep david i can never make my mind up about sandra b..but found her quite compelling/intense in gravity, and george - hate to be shallow but really could watch him painting a wall Blush... Its a toss up this weekend between singalong 'frozen' with DD20 who needs to destress mid-exams and we thought it would be fun OR dallas buyers club which looks v v promising. Saw 'lone survivor' today - certainly gritty and based on a true story...

DavidHarewoodsFloozy · 05/02/2014 22:26

Sing a long Frozen, my 6 yo would love this.Grin, and me .

I watched We need to talk about Kevin., with Tilda Swinton, quite dark, very true to the book. The child actors were amazing.

I love Tilda Swinton, I can recommend Julia, in which she plays an alcholic on mad capper, really moving.

I think I need light and frothy, any recs?

mrsjavierbardem · 25/02/2014 00:47

I love Tilda too though that Jim jarmusch (?) vampire film looks a little unappealing to me.
Loved 12 Years a slave, amazing film, brilliant director I think and Ejiofor is a star.
Really enjoyed Rush.
Want to see the Budapest hotel, Ralph Fiennes looks v funny in it.

OnlyLovers · 25/02/2014 12:08

Oooh, I'll try! May or not make the 50 films though.
2014 so far:

Frozen (loved it. Beautiful, funny, touching, great women)
Inside Llewyn Davis (fine. Fun, looked nice. Slightly underwhelming).
Nebraska (Gorgeous to look at, deeply moving, fantastic performances).
12 Years a Slave (rather underwhelming, not great storytelling).
NT Live screening of Coriolanus at the Donmar (does this count?)
The Invisible Woman (quite good, nice performances, a bit 'tasteful').
Her (bit lightweight but sweet, terrific voice performance by Scarlet Johansson).
Only Lovers Left Alive (looks and sounds beautiful, touchingly romantic, wry, funny, slightly rubbish script nonetheless delivered with conviction).

ghostofawasp · 26/02/2014 19:39

I'm trying to watch more old classics, so I watched An Affair to Remember recently. And properly sobbed! It's really good though, I recommend it.
