Not sure she's actually seen many (apart from the Star Trek reboots) ... what would be your top picks for this age group please?

Avatar?

slug · 13/12/2013 14:40

Alien and Alien 2. Space and a kick arse female lead.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2013 14:44

I think Alien might be too scary. I was a student when the first one came out and didn't like the sound of it then and still don't TBH! But thanks for the suggestion - I'm sure they're good films.

She may like the rebooted TV series of Battlestar Galactica

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2013 14:56

Not seen that - DH and I probably would like it even if she didn't. Grin

Attack the block
Starship trooper
2001 space odyssey
AI
Gattaca
12 Monkeys
War of the worlds
Day of the Triffids
Inception
Invasion of the body snatchers
total recall
the andromeda strain (actually, the book is highly recommendable)

shall I go on?

Francagoestohollywood · 13/12/2013 14:57

Whoops, I didn't see you asked for that particular age group, I thiought they watched everything at 14.

Francagoestohollywood · 13/12/2013 14:58

back to the future!

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 13/12/2013 14:59

Battlestar Galactica is great, I agree.

Also Serenity (film) and Firefly (series) - watch the series first.

I've just finished Fringe - it went a bit post apocalyptic at the end and the science is absolutely ridiculous, but good story.

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 13/12/2013 15:00

everything Franca says !!!

Francagoestohollywood · 13/12/2013 15:02

almost forgot blade runner!

Rollermum · 13/12/2013 15:05

I was going to say Blade Runner too. Also I Robot.

BaaHumbug · 13/12/2013 15:06

A very old one, I've always liked Silent Running.

justsodamntired · 13/12/2013 15:13

Bet she'd love Serenity and Gattaca. Not scary and very accessible.

TinyTear · 13/12/2013 15:15

Moon
Gravity

TinyTear · 13/12/2013 15:15

the day the earth stood still - THE ORIGINAL!!!

AverageHeight · 13/12/2013 15:18

Gattaca
Moon
2001 space odyssey
Star Wars!!!

Does she want thoughtful (along the lines of Moon) or blockbuster (Independence Day)?

ChaffinchOfDoom · 13/12/2013 15:21

total recall
12 monkeys
the new one with Idris elba in it - prometheus
war of the worlds

ProfondoRosso · 13/12/2013 15:22

YY to Blade Runner and Inception.

I love Tarkovsky's original Russian version of Solaris - really strong messages about the meaning of life and science. It is quite long, though!

INeedSomeHelp · 13/12/2013 15:28

Tron - does that count as science fiction? It will probably seem very dated to a 14 year old now.

BaaHumbug · 13/12/2013 15:34

Is she too old for Flight of the Navigator?

Probably not - I'm 47 and still not too old for it. Grin

MysteriousHamster · 13/12/2013 15:39

Another one for Gattaca.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2013 15:43

Does she want thoughtful (along the lines of Moon) or blockbuster (Independence Day)?

Not sure TBH. Up till now I'd have said she would prefer something with a bit of humour (some sci-fi can be awfully up itself dolorous, can't it?) and not too dystopian/pessimistic (though of course she loves Hunger Games so maybe that's my taste not hers now).

pollywollydoodle · 13/12/2013 15:51

solyent green...an oldie but goodie
the original total recall
day of the triffids. midwich cuckoos

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2013 16:12
Thanks

Thanks for all these suggestions - there's quite a few I've not seen. And some I've not seen for a long time - the Midwich Cuckoos film (Village of the Damned) is even older than I am - probably the first 'sci fi' film I ever saw! Grin
